Extractions: On the stage the five members of Run-d-Crew, the Japanese entrants in the Fifth Annual Double Dutch Holiday Classic, are performing a complicated routine to the delight of the young crowd. As they finish spinning and twirling between the ropes, the audience gives them a spontaneous standing ovation - the first of the afternoon. "I told you they were good - and they’ve only being doing it for 3 years," remarks David A. Walker, the event’s Director. In 1973 Walker, then a New York City Community Affairs Detective, single handedly revived Double Dutch as a competitive sport. Originally brought to New York by Dutch settlers in 1600, the game is essentially a more complicated version of skipping involving two ropes and a variety of complicated steps, jumps and turns. Although the audience at the Apollo on Sunday were impressed by the speed and jumping ability of the girls in the earlier events, it is the fusion competition which gets them going. Tellingly the two groups who win the Advanced Fusion Singles and Advanced Fusion Doubles are named "Best of the Show."

Extractions: The sixth annual Double Dutch Holiday Classic was held at Harlem's world famous Apollo Theater on Sunday 7th December, 1997, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd of double dutchers, friends, families and fans. There were over 250 competitors from as far as field as Japan, with most coming from the metropolitan and surrounding areas, displaying dazzling foot speed and incredible acrobatic feats whilst dancing over two ropes whirled in opposite directions, thrilling an appreciative audience. The origins of the sport are traceable to ancient Egypt, Phoenicia and China when ropemakers had to be nimble when jumping the twisted strands they were spinning. It was brought to New York, then New Amsterdam, by Dutch settlers who played skipping games with two ropes, hence the name, Double Dutch, though its popularity as an urban activity had waned by the early 1950s. In 1973, David Walker, a New York police officer, saw the potential of the sport to occupy the many girls and young women who seemed excluded from most sporting activities. I spoke to Memi Magomi from the 1996 advanced-fusion champions Run-D-Crew from Tokyo. "I started to double-dutch when I saw an American video, four years ago", she said. She was also very much influenced by the Dynamics Diplomats of Double Dutch (DDDD), a team started by Walker that competed and exhibited in Japan. As Walker says: "We went to Japan and showed them what to do - and they came back two years later, ready to go!" And now the popularity of the sport is increasing in Japan. Magomi explained: "My team, Run-D-Crew, won last year and, I hope, this year. Now we have some students like Sabuka from the Trouble Makers who have been double-dutching for six-months only."

Here, the design has been transformed to use simple blocks based on half-square triangles, rather than the usual 45 degree diamonds. A second round of "petals" completes the design, hence its name: Double Dutch Rose Two color scheme options are offered for this design. The first color scheme (above) uses four shades each of two contrasting colors, plus a strong background color. If you've ever taken a fabric dyeing workshop in gradated colors, this is the perfect project for those fabrics. The second variation (at right) uses only three different fabrics. Well whats happened, I got a bike yes decided that the time had come to get a little fitter and lose a little weight and it seemed liek the easiest way, well everybody else in Amsterdam has one, its quiet nice to get about a bit and see a little more of Amsterdam, Finished the Dave Gorman book and then read the sequel to Bridget Jones Diary which is well reccomended. Work is the same as usual, but shift work is becoming more of a bind the longer I do it. Things I''m looking forward to at the moment: The World Cup which starts next week, Stag night in the UK in a couple of weeks time including a visit to a brewery and a curry. Ok thats it for now more regular updates I hope, and if any of this didnt make sense then I''m sorry but it is 5.20AM as I write it :)
