secrets

Delia loves Double Dutch more than just about anything, and she's really good at it -- so good she and her teammates have a shot at winning the World Double Dutch Championships. Delia would die if she couldn't jump -- but Delia has a secret, and it could keep her off the team next year.

Delia's friend Randy has a secret too, one that has him lonely and scared. And while Delia and Randy struggle to keep their secrets, their school is abuzz with rumors about what malicious mischief the terrible Tolliver twins -- who just may have a secret of their own -- are planning.

Delia and Randy's secrets collide on what should be the happiest day of Delia's life, and the collision threatens to destroy their friendship. Why can't life be as easy for Delia as Double Dutch? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Dutch
Sharon Draper has done another great job in authoring this book.I am so glad to see this book a perfect match for middle schoolers. It is not too old for 6th graders or too young for 8th graders.I don't have to worry about language or inappropriate scenes, either...what a relief! It does deal with an older student being a non-reader plus the tensions of dealing with a natural disaster and even throws in dealing with divorce. That is done in an extremely healthy way.I would recommend this as a class novel, small groups, or individual students (or adults!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings
Double Dutch is all about secrets and friendship and fear, and overall I found it a good read.I loved the characters (especially Yolanda) and I liked the story line, but the novel lacked some of the emotional depth that other teen novels I've been reading have had. Still a good read but also a little disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay
I've heard much good about Draper and saw this book had alot of copies in our school library (who probably has about 1 or 2 or at the most 3 copies of each book) and thought maybe it's good.I'm not disappointed with it but wouldn't go around saying its the best book in the world and will never recommend it to any of my friends (who wouldn't like it) but many people would enjoy it and it does have a good story line and plot so I'm not putting it down because I enjoyed it but you have to be the right person

5-0 out of 5 stars Double Dutch
I love this book. This is a great book. The main character is Delia. She has a big secret that no one no's about. She has been keeping it to herself for many years now. She's scared to tell others. The setting takes place in a high school in Miss. Benson's classroom. Sometimes in the gym competing or practicing other jump roping. The point of view is Delia that's telling the story. First, Delia found a paper on a pole, it had a picture of Randy's dad. She didn't no what it was about so she hid it from him. When Randy was cleaning the gym he found the paper. He got mad at Delia. At the end she finally told him that she couldn't read. Delia and her mom went out to dinner after the competition and she told her. She told Delia why she didn't she say anything sooner and that she was going to do everything that was possible to get her the help she needed to learn how to read. Randy has a crush on Delia, he protects her, his nice, and caring. This book is about Delia not knowing how to read and how she got threw competing in the nationals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Dutch
The main characters of this book are Delia,Randy, and Yolanda.Delia is a smart, nice, pretty, athletic young lady.Randy is a active, smart, and has a crush on Delia.Yolanda is active, pretty, and a liar(who lies about pretty much everything).
The setting of this book is in present day, around the 2000's. It is in a high school(during school hours) in miss.benson's classroom. It also takes place in the gymnasium where they jump rope.
The conflict of the book is that Delia doesn't know how to read. She didn't tell anyone except yolanda. She didnt want to tell anyone because she thought that it would interfere in her double dutch tournament and so she wanted to wait to tell her mother. So after the tournament she told her mother and randy and her mother told her she was going to get help.
The plot of the story is they practiced for double dutch everyday after school in the gymnasium. There is a BIG reading test coming up and Delia is really scared because she doesn't know how to read. The test is before the double dutch competition and she is scared that she wont pass the test and she will get kicked out of double dutch. Then out of no where a big twin tornadoes attack and the school messes up big time and school is cancelled until it gets fixed. So that means no test. Then it is the double dutch competition the win and she tells her mother and randy.
The theme is "Once in a blue moon not telling the truth can come in handy. But still lieing is really bad."
The point of view is second person. Second person is close to first person because the with "you" is replacing the "I". ... Read more

Product Description
From the dandy with black skin to astronauts and aliens dressed in typical African colors and materials, Yinka Shonibare addresses issues of cultural identity in his artistic research with irony. The Nigerian-British artist seeks provocative and destabilizing elements to stimulate new reflections on our typical perspectives of the world. His often spectacular installations quote famous European paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, with mannequins dressed in typically western fashions sewn from batik, a fabric considered typically African, but which actually has a complex origin involving Dutch colonialism. The result is an excellent metaphor for addressing the collision of cultures. In other works, Shonibare places himself at the center of photographic images dressed as Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray. For Shonibare, the dandy is a leitmotiv: the person who states his individuality by challenging well-to-do society through his appearance. ~This publication is the first substantial book on Shonibare's work. Besides illustrating his major works from 1994 until now, the book features a number of in-depth essays on important aspects of his work that are always touched upon but never fleshed out, including the relevance of recent art history, the trade in Dutch Wax textiles, the history of the dandy, the sexuality and leisure of the aristocracy in Victorian times, and the rise of modernism in Nigeria. Additionally, Gracia Lebbink's thoughtful, playful book designed employs different colors of paper and binds the book in fabrics similar to those that Shonibare uses in his work.

Edited by Jaap Guldemond and Gabriele Mackert. ~Essays by Peter Bailey, ManthiaDiawara, Achille Mbembe,Angela McRobbie, Onyema Offoedu-Okeke and John Picton.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a laughable book and pathetic message!
Rarely ever have I read such a sorry backward looking message.I picked up this book with interest.Yes, I am a proud progressive Democrat who believes in every American's right to good health care, housing, education, equal rights and privacy.Yet, I wanted to see what a conservative AfricanAmerican could find so wrong with the agenda of civil rights and economicmobility. What I found was laughable. The author's "points" arebarely points at all. They are mostly attacks - quite defensive ones, indeed. These "attacks" seek to paint the author as white aspossible, with a conservative brush which stems further and further to thefar right as the reader goes into this book.

This book is a joke, simply put.African Americans and minorities - as well as whites - inAmerica today do not need the Republican party of regression andprivatization. The GOP of the past - with its occasional moderation andconserving conservatism - was bad enough.Yet, today's nativist andSouthern-based and increasingly regionalized Republican party has no roomsfor minorities or forward looking whites.

The author says thatthe GOP has room for minorities. That is wrong. The GOP will never haveroom for minorities until it changes itself dramatically and becomes theDemocratic party. This book is a joke, as well as a defensive attempt topaint oneself as white as possible!

As for me, I will never be apart of a party which bashes unions and working people(as well as theirpublic protections), caters to the interests of the rich and bigotry andattacks public safe guards for the poor and at-risk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Minorities and the Republican party do NOT go together
It has been said, quite correctly, that a black man voting Republican is not unlike chicken little voting for the Colonel for President. As GOP policies show, people of color are not welcomed in the party.Just look atthe facts.

The GOP has tried to abolish basic civil rightsguarantees for minorities and women, as well as the handicapped.Theydecimated the safety net under Reagan and tried to do it again underGingrich and Dole in 1995.They favor privaitzation of Social Security andMedicare, the brunt of which would fall on blacks which are too old and toopoor to bother to protest. They favor deep cuts in food stamps, Head Startand AmeriCorps. They in 1995 proposed deep reductions in public educationspending, as well as Affirmative Action and pro-woman aid in colleges. Theyfavor eliminating the income tax on the wealthy. They favor deeprestrictions on the civil rights of immigrants. They favor English Onlylaws and repealing all gun control laws. They favor reductions in urbanaid and public works. They refuse to back national health insurance ornational job unemployment insurance.

Does this strike a picture ofa conservative party that is dying to have black support?Of course not. The author is crazy to ever think that the word 'African American' and'Republican' will ever go together.Sell outs never cease to amaze me! ... Read more

2007 Alan Merriam Prize presented by the Society for Ethnomusicology

2007 PEN/Beyond Margins Book Award Finalist

When we think of African American popular music, our first thought is probably not of double-dutch: girls bouncing between two twirling ropes, keeping time to the tick-tat under their toes. But this book argues that the games black girls play —handclapping songs, cheers, and double-dutch jump rope—both reflect and inspire the principles of black popular musicmaking.

The Games Black Girls Play illustrates how black musical styles are incorporated into the earliest games African American girls learn—how, in effect, these games contain the DNA of black music.Drawing on interviews, recordings of handclapping games and cheers, and her own observation and memories of gameplaying, Kyra D. Gaunt argues that black girls' games are connected to long traditions of African and African American musicmaking, and that they teach vital musical and social lessons that are carried into adulthood. In this celebration of playground poetry and childhood choreography, she uncovers the surprisingly rich contributions of girls' play to black popular culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars The blurbs from the back of the book...
"By placing black girls at the center of her analysis, Kyra Gaunt challenges us to be ever mindful of the importance of gender, the body, and the everyday in our discussions of black music. The Games Black Girls Play is an exciting and original work that should forever transform the way we think about the sources of black, indeed American, populat music. This is a bold, brilliant, and beautifully written book."-Farah Jasmine Griffin, Columbia University

"The Games Black Girls Play not only makes the point that black girls matter, but that the games, thoughts, and passions of black girls matter in a world that regularly renders black girls invisible and silent. Gaunt brilliantly argues that the culture of black girls is a critical influence on contemporary black popular culture."

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but having some gaps
I've been trying to do some research on the Dutch resistance during World War 2, and found this first-person account very lively and informative. My own grandfather was a resistance fighter during the war and was captured and executed, so it was vital for me to try and understand what he went through, which this book adequately does. It's a personal narrative of a wartime resistance fighter who comes to lead his group after the prior leader is captured. It does provide great insight into what exactly these groups were up to, with plenty of anecdotes. It's a bit skinny on the surrounding historical events, i feel the entire framework of the story could've been fleshed out more. For example, he merely mentioned that they were in contact with the British and were supplied with weapons and various other materiel, but never explains how this was achieved and what the particulars were (codes? hidden radios?). Also, the narrator comes across as a bit unsympathetic and callous, but that's probably what the times demanded of them.
Overall a fascinating albeit brief read of an important era and of people that often get lost in the more 'glamorous' (for casual readers) aspects of WW2.

5-0 out of 5 stars True stories of a hero of the resistance in Holland...
Reading this book was like having an undercover spy sit in my living room and regale me with hair raising tales of sabotage and stealth. All the while under the noses of the Nazis who occupied all of Holland during World War II.These exciting stories tell how the Dutch underground resisted the German war effort, punished quislings and black marketeers, and smuggled Allied flyers out of the country by night. There is also the tragedy of betrayals, the nightmare of captivity, and finally the victory of liberation. The hero called himself Lucky George, as he lived through the invasion, occupation, and liberation of his native country. This book can be read in one evening, and gratefully so, as the mounting suspense demands that sleep be postponed until the final chapter. ...
