The Double Dutch Divas are perhaps the only professional entertainment-oriented jumprope group. They've appeared on several TV spots and are regularly asked to perform at local events. For about 30 minutes, the Divas put on a great show, wowing the crowds with quick-stepped jumps that are an equal mix of athleticism and showmanship. The group formed around 1980, when some friends began to regularly jump rope on Sundays around 72nd Street in New York City, near the rollerskating ring in Central Park. As Diva Willie Sanford (known as Heart) explains, "Back then, there was a large group of women getting together to jump. We might have 100 on a good day. It was wonderful experience for all of us women who had learned these games as children to get together to continue as adults."

24. U Is For Ubbi-dubbi
Short article by Jed Hartman about the play language and its popularization by the ZOOM television show. Also mentions the related double dutch and Doublespeak.
http://www.kith.org/logos/words/lower/u.html
u: Ubbi Dubbi, You're the One
(25 May 1997) A lot of people from my generation will never forget one of Boston's ZIP codes. If you aren't in your late twenties to mid-thirties but know someone who is, try telling such a person, "Send it to ZOOM!" Chances are fairly good that they'll chant, "Box three five oh, Bos-ton Mass, ohhh, two oooone, three foooour..." Zoom was a TV show that aired on PBS in the early 1970s. It featured a bunch of kids in striped shirts performing various fun and interesting activities; one of the things they did was to speak in a code language. I, of course, had to know how it was done, so I wrote away (or more likely my parents did on my behalf) for their pamphlet on Ubbi Dubbi. It turned out that speaking Ubbi Dubbi simply involved putting an "ub" before every vowel sound. Ubif yubou spuboke ubit rubealluby fubast, nubobuboduby whubo dubidubn't knubow Ububbubi Dububbubi cubould ubunduberstuband yubou. Ubbi Dubbi beat the heck out of Pig Latin in terms of (in)comprehensibility. Everyone knew Pig Latin. Or some version of it, anyway; everyone seemed to have slightly different rules for what to do when a word began with a vowel. Ome-say eople-pay ut-pay an-ay "-ay"-ay after-ay uch-say ords-way, while others used "-yay" or "-hay" or "-way." But whichever of those you picked, pretty much everyone could understand you. Ubbi Dubbi was private, reserved only for those cognoscenti who watched Zoom (and perhaps any parents who were paying attention).

Double Dutch and how to speak it?
Part 1
First of all the book " the Undutchables " by authors Boucke and White shows a clear picture of the strange peculiarities the Dutch have as a people.
"Dutch is impossible to learn, it's completely different from English, the grammar is very complicated, the Dutch sounds are impossible to pronounce and, after all, you don't really need Dutch of you're living in the Netherlands, because they all speak perfect English." To the unaccustomed ear, Dutch appears to be constituted of grunts and growls, occasionally added snarls and k-sounds. That, however, is far from true. On this page I'll try to show the origin of our language as well as some of the ridiculous aspects.

Double Dutch and how to speak it - part 2
Verbs - basic conjugation

(according to an example) Instead of putting to in front of a verb like in English, Dutch uses what one calls the ‘whole’ verb. In this sense English is much more easy than Dutch that likes to change the verbs all the time. Most verbs end with -en . So it looks like nem-en, lop-en, fiets-en, houd-en, slap-en. Conjugations of pronouns always take place at the first part of the verb (stem = stam). Not necessary to say that these general rules mostly apply to regular verbs. Generally what happens is the following: TO TAKE - NEMEN
I take; I took, I have/had taken

Pages in Dutch - Nederlandstalige pagina's Highly inspired by a list of Dutch-English homonyms I found in The Undutchables (see Books ), I tried to find words that could possibly cause embarrassment. I would like to point out that the words listed here often only cause misunderstandings when not pronounced correctly. But, on the other hand, those who know how to pronounce them correctly are the more advanced learners and they would hardly mix up the meanings anyway (unless they want to play tricky jokes). To update this list regularly, I would appreciate all suggestions.

Stichtingsprofiel
There was once a poor woodchopper.
'This woodchopping', he said one day to his woman, 'there sits no dry bread in. I work myself an accident the whole day, but you and our twelve children have not to eat'
'I see the future dark in, his woman agreed.'
'We must try to fit a sleeve on it, the woodchopper resumed; I have a plan: tomorrow we shall go on step with the children, and then, in the middle of the wood, we'll leave them to their fate over'.
His woman almost went off her little stick when she heard this. 'What is there with you on the hand? she cried, aren't you good sob?'
But the woodchopper wasn't brought off his piece by her wailing, he gave no shrink.
'It cannot differ to me what you think', he said. 'There sits nothing else on, tomorrow we leave them in the wood'.
Little Thumbie, the youngest son, had listened off his parents' conversation. The next morning before day and dew he went out and filled his pockets with pebbles. During the walk into the wood he knew unmarked-up to drop them one for one. Then the parents told the children to sprockle some wood and shined the plate.

The delighted Dutch celebrate after winning gold
The Netherlands 3-3 South Korea (5-4 on penalties) The Netherlands retained the Olympic men's hockey title after beating South Korea 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out, ending a 40-year-old jinx on defending champions. The tie-breaker was enforced when both teams were locked 3-3 after regulation time and failed to break the deadlock in 15 minutes of extra-time. Song Seung Tae, South Korea's most prolific scorer, pushed the third stroke wide to help the Dutch win a shoot-out for the second match in a row. They had also won the tie-breaker against hosts Australia on Thursday to advance to the final. Back-to-back The Dutch became the first team to win back-to-back Olympic titles after India's streak of six golds ended at the 1960 Games in Rome. Bram Lomans, Piet-Hein Geeris, Wouter van Pelt and Marten Ekelboom scored in the tie-breaker for the Dutch, before captain Stephan Veen followed his hat-trick in the match with the winning stroke. Jeon Jong-Ha, Yeo Woon-Kon, Kim Kyung-Seok and Kang Keon-Wook converted their shots for the Koreans.

Tuesday, 26 September, 2000, 03:53 GMT 04:53 UK Double Dutch delight for Zijlaard
The race gets underway - before the clouds opened
Leontien Zijlaard confirmed her reputation as the world's best women's cyclist when she claimed her second cycling gold of Sydney 2000 with a superb sprint finish in a rain-lashed road race. The Dutch star, who beat Yvonne McGregor into bronze in the 3,000m individual pursuit last week and also bagged silver in the points race, burst from the pack in the closing stages to take the title in terrible conditions in 3hrs:06mins:31.001secs. Germany's Hanka Kupfernagel took silver, edging Diana Ziliute of Lithuania into third place on the line. Britain's Sara Symington, who only took up the sport two years ago, produced a highly creditable display over the 120km course to finish in 10th place.
Zijlaad cannot contain her delight as she crosses the line And McGregor, who was bidding to add to her personal medal haul now that the cycling competition has moved from the velodrome onto Sydney's roads, was also among the contenders and crossed the line at the back of the leading pack of 24 riders.
