Thanks for joining me online today. I've just come from judging a Christmas cookie contest so I'm all sugared up and ready to answer your questions. Fire away! moderatorsteve Here we go. nomoremarthastewart My soninlaw doesn't want me to make peanut butter cookies for them for christmas because they have a newborn and he says peanut butter is an allergy risk to infants. He's crazy, right? What other ingredients are unsafe for infants or toddlers? JanetKeeler Many doctors advise young children not to eat peanuts because of allergy concerns. So, no, he's not crazy. There are not cookies suitable for infants, mostly because they don't have a lot of teeth to chew them. Sugar cookies or even chocolate chip cookies would be great for toddlers.

So use both wisely. When you have several dishes to go into the oven, try to schedule your cooking so that you can cook more than one dish at a time. Often, a simple temperature change of a few degrees will allow you to put two casseroles in at once, using the oven's heat efficiently and resulting in the same great meal! Also, try not to open and close the oven door all the time. Every time the door is opened the oven loses heat and has to work harder to get back to the correct temperature. Use the oven window (make sure it's clean before you start cooking!) and the interior light to check on the meal as it cooks.

Top 10 Holiday Food Safety Tips Keep Cold Foods Cold Place bowls of food on foodsuntil they are done - do not partially cook foods and finish cooking later.
http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/~Bond/holiday.html
During the months of November, December and January, families and friends get together to celebrate a variety of holidays. Many of the festivities are centered around mealtime. Often the recipes served have been passed down through several generations reflecting cultural heritages. We cook and serve foods differently today than we did years ago. New methods for cooking and new information about food safety are available. One needs to be up to date with the latest recommendations for preventing food-borne illness.
Top 10 Holiday Food Safety Tips
  • Keep Cold Foods Cold - Place bowls of food on top of containers of ice when serving buffet style meals.
  • Use clean bowls and fresh food when replenishing serving bowls.
  • Cook foods until they are done - do not partially cook foods and finish cooking later.
  • Foods prepared ahead of time should be refrigerated until served.
  • Store turkey leftovers in shallow containers and use within 3 to 4 days (gravy within 1 to 2 days) or freeze for later use.
  • Cooked foods should sit at room temperature no more than 2 hours.
  • Use a meat thermometer to know when your meats are thoroughly cooked.

Get Ready for Holiday Cooking and Eating
At this time of year more than any other, the kitchen becomes the focus of frenzied activity. It's also a time when it's important to take deep breaths, relax, and have fun. Here are a few tips to help you do just that.
    • Before you cook even one holiday recipe, remove kitchen clutter, making as much room as you can for holiday preparations. Cast a cold, hard eye on those kitchen counters. Pack away the chicken-shaped egg timer you haven't used since last Easter, or consolidate the four crocks of whisks and wooden spoons into one. Get out a large cardboard box and fill it with all the things you won't need, and stash the box in the attic or basement.
    • Attack the refrigerator. Discard everything that's past its prime, especially containers full of science experiments. Make space to chill bowls of cookie dough, batches of eggnog, and perishable food gifts you may receive.
