5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have not made a bad recipe from this book yet! Especially recommending the spinach & artichoke dip, but honestly, anything you might choose from this collection should be incredible. Great pictures for so many recipes, advice on cooking & hosting the perfect holiday get together, pre-planned menus...

3-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, organized a little funny
I love Cooking Light and I subscribe to the magazine, so liking the food in the cookbook was not the question.I was a little surprised how it was organized though.I prefer cookbooks to be organized in a per type of recipe fashion (i.e. separated by cookies, meats, side dishes, appetizers, etc.).Instead, they organized by different menus.Yes, the tips were handy, but hard to find if you are looking for a cookie recipe and need a tip on cookies, for example.I had to go through page by page (and eventually, just turned to the index) to find all of the dessert recipes.*sigh*They could have made this a lot more convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Excellent book. I've had it a few weeks and tried about ten recipes and they've all been delicious. This is definately a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a holiday cookbook!
This is a GREAT book! It has many, many different and interesting recipes that are not the same-old, same-old holiday fare. The suggested menus and wine pairings make it simple and undaunting to throw together a small or large party. And I love that a lot of the recipes list make-ahead components. The recipes included in this book are ones you can enjoy all year round. Don't wait for a holiday to try them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Wonderful Recipes
This book has many different takes on traditional holiday food plus many unique recipes that one might not usually consider when preparing their holiday feast. There is even a section that includes ideas for edible holiday gifts. I am a subscriber to Cooking Light magazine and own many of their other books, and the recipes never dissapoint. Everything I have made has been delicious. There are so many good recipes I had trouble narrowing down what recipes to make for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

One of my favorite recipes from this book is the Marbled-Chocolate Banana Bread. I plan on using this book year-round. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kids in the Kitchen
Enjoyed this book and got lots of ideas for the grandchildren at Christmas. They always enjoy baking and making crafts.Great Ideas for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids in the Holiday Kitchen
I first saw this book at our local library and fell in love with its graphics and fun recipes to do with kids. The recipes are colorful and many would make great teacher gifts all year around. There are recipes for lunch, such as, tea cup soup and snowman sandwiches...dressed up tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Our family is having a reunion this weekend and the caramel corn with orange and chocolate should be a hit.And our 4-H group recently used the cookies in a jar recipe for a project learning day and the kids really enjoyed themselves as they scooped in the ingredients and made colorful tags. This book will get lots of use year around!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book
I was really happy to find this book for my daughters this Christmas. It has a really nice selection of recipes and crafts. There are ideas for meals like Stuffed French Toast, Mac and Cheese, and our favorite Teacup Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches (cut with cookie cutter). Although this isn't a vegetarian cookbook, only two of the recipes contain meat (most recipes contain dairy products however). The selection of sweets (admittedly our favorite chapter) included ice cream, cookies, candies, drinks, and more. We all found something we liked (for me it was the Chocolate Mint Brownies!) The book also containsa selection of craft projects to make for gifts--the layered cookie jar especially caught my eye. A lot of the crafts sounded pretty good but I wish each one had a picture because it's hard to figure out what they should look like, especially for kids. In fact, if there was a picture of each recipe and craft, this would have been a five star rating. Still a great book, small and manageable for kids with some nice ideas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like new
Great book for all seasons. Great buy and great seller, fast delivery and perfect condition!

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre book, sorry.
The seller of this book did any excellent job in packing and shipping, but the book itself is nothing special.
For example, for Easter?, it gives a recipe for "special mashed potatoes"! What's special about them? They used the basics; potatoes, milk, butter, salt and pepper.
I like Betty Crocker cook books, but save your money. You can do better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best holiday recipes!
I have used this cookbook over and over with great success. The recipes are easy to follow and turn out wonderfully every time. All dishes that I have prepared were delicious and received rave reviews from my dinner guests.I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone; the recipes are great for holidays or everyday cooking. And, the recipes are grouped by holiday to help you plan an excellent and well-balanced menu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel good book
This is a very sweet book.An odd way to describe a cookbook, but that's the way it struck me.It includes holidays that are usually skipped by most books-Chinese New Year, Passover, Kwanzaa. There are small, easy projects and decorative crafts, and the photos are beautiful. The strawberry/cream Santa figures on the cover brought a smile to my face. The recipes are not particularly difficult, and there is a nice assortment of cakes, cookies, treats and full meals to choose from. What else can I say?I like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes planning a party easy
This cook book includes lots of pictures (I think one for each recipe) and is separated into chapters for each holiday. It inludes ideas for complete holiday celebrations, from drinks to desert to center pieces and decorations. The ideas are cute and unique. I think adults and kids will have fun with the ideas in this book. I am planning on following the recipe plan for Cinco de Mayo! ... Read more

"My Sicilian grandmother used to make a cookic with red wine, dipped in honey, but I can't find a recipe anywhere."

Whether you're looking for your grandmother's vecchiarelle, a traditional Christmas Lye Neapolitan seafood salad, Italian-style fried chicken for Chanukah, or spice cookies for All Souls' Day, you'll find them together with 150 other classic recipes in Italian Holiday Cooking.

From Christmas to Carnevale, from Sundae dinner to saints' feast days, Italians know how to celebrate. And what's an Italian celebration without food?

Enjoy Christmas Capon, Red Risotto for Rosh Hashanah, and Good Luck Lentil Soup for New Year's Day. Leave it to the Italians to honor the holidays with specific pasta dishes: Pasta for Saint Joseph's Day -- tripolini with almonds, bread crumbs, and anehovy -- Ravioli for the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, and Fettuccine and Chickpeas for the Day of the Dead. There are antipasti and savory pies and hearty second courses. Special cakes, cookies, and other dolci include Chocolate Cake for Passover, Christmas Struffoli, and Carnevale Cannoli. And, of course, all these recipes can be made throughout the year.

Italian Holiday Cooking includes stories and the lore of homeland traditions and celebrations that Italian-American families have kept alive in the United States. So even if you're not Italian, celebrate with Italian Holiday Cooking.

Amazon.com Review
Michele Scicolone wrote Italian Holiday Cooking in order to save those most-loved recipes our immigrant grandparents and parents brought with them from Italy but we never thought to write down. Surely, this is comfort food at its finest. Savory Easter Pie is rich with onions and sausage; ricotta, Parmigiano, mozzarella, and Swiss cheeses; and ham, salami, and pepperoni. Can you smell it baking? Umbrian Ragu, more elaborate than most, calls for dried porcini mushrooms and black truffles. Venetian Risotto with Peas for San Marco is soft and creamy, served wetter than typical risottos, and is very simple to make.

Scicolone's introduction to each recipe includes a bit of background about where it came from, for which holiday it's prepared, and tips for preparation. She also recommends a wine for every dish. And since no holiday would be complete without dessert, Scicolone offers a beautiful selection of cakes, cookies, and other desserts, including a Chocolate Chunk Cheesecake made with ricotta, Creamy Rice Fritters, and the elusive first recipe of the 150 she collected for this project, Vecchiarelle, which are little cookies flavored with red wine and honey. --Leora Y. This is one of the better Italian cookbooks I have come across
but I ran into a problem with the first recipe I tried. The orange semolina cake sounded great.I prepared the semolina, made the ricotta mixture and beat the egg whites. The recipe never tells you what to do with the cooked semolina!I'm an experienced cook, and I figured it went into the ricotta mixture, but who knows? We're eating it tomorrow, Christmas Eve and I guess I'll find out then. ... Product Description
Jewish holidays are defined by food. Yet Jewish cooking is always changing, encompassing the flavors of the world, embracing local culinary traditions of every place in which Jews have lived and adapting them to Jewish observance. This collection, the culmination of Joan Nathan’s decades of gathering Jewish recipes from around the world, is a tour through the Jewish holidays as told in food. For each holiday, Nathan presents menus from different cuisines—Moroccan, Russian, German, and contemporary American are just a few—that show how the traditions of Jewish food have taken on new forms around the world. There are dishes that you will remember from your mother’s table and dishes that go back to the Second Temple, family recipes that you thought were lost and other families’ recipes that you have yet to discover. Explaining their origins and the holidays that have shaped them, Nathan spices these delicious recipes with delightful stories about the people who have kept these traditions alive.

Try something exotic—Algerian Chicken Tagine with Quinces or Seven-Fruit Haroset from Surinam—or rediscover an American favorite like Pineapple Noodle Kugel or Charlestonian Broth with “Soup Bunch” and Matzah Balls. No matter what you select, this essential book, which combines and updates Nathan’s classic cookbooks The Jewish Holiday Baker and The Jewish Holiday Kitchen with a new generation of recipes, will bring the rich variety and heritage of Jewish cooking to your table on the holidays and throughout the year. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My most Favourite Cookbook
As the owner of at least one million cookbooks and a trillion food magazines I constantly return to this book for its superb recipes. They always work and have become part of our family holiday food history from the pickled salmon to the chocolate roulade, the cabbage strudel and many more. Just wish it was on my Kindle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rosh Hashanah gift for mothers
I bought this book as a gift for my mother and my boyfriend's mother. From the cover, I thought it would be full of pictures of delicious Jewish food. Besides recipes, I think a good cookbook should have mouth-watering pictures. When I flipped through this book at my mother's house, I didn't find a single picture! I was so disappointed. My mother seemed to like the recipes and tried some to varying degrees of success. Overall, the cookbook seemed very well researched and organized, but I wish there were pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking
This is an excellent book.I love to cook and I love to cook all kinds of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for newbies, experts, historians, and foodies
Jewish Holiday Kitchen is/wasmy favorite Jewish cookbook to use and to give, and this is the revised version. I don't know if it has all of her recipes from the first, plus some from her baking book, or if some from Kitchen have been left out.Unless you are looking for specific recipes from the first book (see below) this new one is a safe bet.
Great Gift:the descriptions of holidays include both the basic (for those without much Jewish education), and the deep, fascinating details of traditions unique to regions, history, etc.
Great recipes for the basics: yes, Holiday Kitchen had the best cookie dough hamentaschen of dozens tried, challah, and more. The hamentasch recipe is different from the one in her Holiday Baking, and in her Kids Jewish cooking.I don't know which made it into this revised version.
Great recipes for foodies:I've eaten my way across Morocco and tried dozens upon dozens of recipes for bastilla, the fillo pie from Morocco often filled with pigeon and dusted with powdered sugar. Her version, with chicken, is absolutely positively the best. Her potato kugelettes are another favorite; they are an elegant, simple, delicious addition to Passover, Hanukah, or any meal you want to look special. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One big glitch
I've been successfully baking for years and years and years...and this book is beautiful. For this year'sChristmas, I made the Caramel Merangue pie. While looking absolutely beautiful, it was an OVERLY sweet pie, that did not set up properly. The caramel was too loose to cut in slices, and ended up as a sloppy mess.I would never make it again. While I would never judge a cookbook solely on the merits of one recipe, I gave it 4 stars because I'm hoping the other recipes will be much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try the Eggnog Cheesecake recipe
There is a recipe for eggnog cheesecake in this book that is incredible. The preparation seems involved but if you follow the steps it will come out great. My guests cleaned their plates before I served the last piece....It was to die for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from Rebecca Rather
Can Rebecca Rather write a bad cookbook?Never! This book is geared toward Christmas, but I use the recipes all year long. When I want to bake, my first books to choose from my library are Rebecca's books.I can always find something that tweaks my interest. The Christmas book is like her first in the way that I have the ingredients in my pantry. The photos are great and the stories about herself, her daughter, employees and customers make me feel as if I know her on a personal basis. Now I can't wait for her next book on entertaining to be published. It should be available in October and I'm counting the days until I receive my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars YUM!
The photos and stories are excellent. The chicken lasagna was great, my dad said it was the best ever! It had kind of a Tex Mex flair.I even left out a few of her ingredients like substituting evaporated milk for the heavy cream and roasting my own chicken instead of buying a rotisserie chicken. The ingredient list looks long but the ingredients were already in my cabinet. She also gives alternative options to make the same dish.I'm a beginning cook and it was easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Gift for Yourself
This cookbook is both a visual feast and an interesting read....I'm so glad Amazon made it more affordable than many of the retail stores at which I've seen it for sale.I can't wait to try some of the recipes, particularly the Apple-Spice Layer Cake with Caramel Swirl Icing and the Cranberry Walnut Scones. ... Product Description
Never is the generosity and spirit of the Italian table more evident than at the holidays, when great food and good times are on the menu in every household. In his new book, Mario Batali captures all the flavors of this festive season with enticing recipes that showcase the brilliance of simple Italian food at its best.

Four complete menus offer abundant meals for the holidays, starting with the seafood extravaganza known as the Feast of Seven Fishes, traditionally served on Christmas Eve. Mario's rendition includes almost a dozen delectable fish and seafood dishes, from delicate sea bass ravioli to the indispensable baccalà, here served in the Vesuvian style. A magnificent boned and rolled turkey breast stuffed with roasted chestnuts is the centerpiece of a lavish Christmas Day's menu, while an assortment of alluring finger foods and a showstopping ziti-and-meatball-filled pasta dome set the tone for a lively New Year's Eve celebration. For the relaxed entertaining of New Year's Day, Mario suggests a procession of marinated salads, pastas, and stuffed vegetables, all served at room temperature, capped off with fresh homemade sausage with sweet peppers.

One of the great pleasures of cooking at this time of the year is baking, and Mario Batali Holiday Food includes recipes for a dozen irresistible holiday cookies, some authentically Italian and others family favorites Mario has relished since childhood. You'll also find a host of delectable tortes, custards, cakes, and confections as well as wine suggestions and a refreshing aperitivo to round out each holiday menu.

Whether you're creating a full-blown Italian spread or simply adding a touch of Italy to your own family traditions, Mario Batali Holiday Food will make your holiday gatherings memorably delicious.Amazon.com Review
With the infectious enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, Mario Batali--who presides over a culinary empire that includes the popular Food Network television show Molto Mario, four acclaimed New York restaurants, and a wine store--presents four complete menus for the holidays and captures all the fun and festivity that epitomize Italian celebrations. True to the commitment to simple cooking evident in his first book, Simple Italian Food, the dishes here deliver maximum flavor and enjoyment without being overly complicated.

Batali's version of the famous Italian seafood extravaganza traditionally served on Christmas Eve--known as the Feast of Seven Fishes--includes no fewer than15 enticing dishes. Marinated Fresh Anchovies are both surprisingly delectable and delightful in their simplicity. Salt Cod with Capers and Mint, Grilled Lobster with Herbs and Arugula, and Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes would each be showstoppers as the centerpiece of any meal. Served together, they comprise a truly unforgettable feast.

The Christmas Day menu is equally lavish, centering on a succulent boned turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts and prunes, while the New Year's Day spread is pure decadence. The latter begins innocently enough, with a refreshing aperitivo of tangerine juice, Compari, and soda, then proceeds through a parade of richly flavored dishes, from the hot-pepper-spiked Octopus in the Style of the Prostitutes of Napoli, to the meatball-filled "mythic pasta dome" known as Timpano di Maccheroni, to the prosciutto-wrapped Braised Pork Roll. An irresistible selection of dolci (sweets), including Cinnamon Chocolate Pudding with Pine Nuts and Waffle Cookies, rounds out the meal. New Year's Day welcomes a relaxed daylong open house replete with an ever-changing spread of antipasti, pasta, and dolci, most of which can be prepared at leisure and served at room temperature, enabling the hosts to enjoy the party as much as the guests.

Photos, along with helpful wine suggestions and practical advice on technique, accompany each menu. Throughout, Batali paints a portrait of his Italian-American family that reminds readers that the simple joy of being together is what the holidays are really about. The 60 simple yet elegant recipes can be mixed, matched, and adapted for any occasion. Served together or separately, each is cause for celebration. --Robin Donovan ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Something's Always Not Right
The recipes in this cookbook seem to be a bit "off". Vegetable oil and anise seeds in the pizzelle, limoncello in the cannoli shells, the use of mint, no baking powder in the strufoli, no garlic in the Neapolitan meat sauce (?) Thyme in the basic tomato sauce, sheep's casings for pork sausage.....I used to watch him on TV, and there was something unsettling about his show.I couldn't put my finger on it. Something always seemed wrong with the recipes. They never hit the mark. You would never say, "Now, that's Italian". I've been all over Italy many many times, and Batali's creations somehow don't ring true.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Four Menus, Four Festive Meals."
This is a compendium of distinctive recipes designed for four holidays, from Christmas eve through to New years day in elegant Italian style. The recipes make use of seasonal ingredients & shows a modest cross section of the regional variety of Italian cooking traditions. But, it is on the whole a book on the region of Campania. It includes color pictures of the food itself that are both more numerous & of finer quality than in his other books. Like many Asians, Italians truly revel in small portions of several types of dishes.

This is cooking from scratch, no breezy shortcuts here. But, the instructions are direct & the results are very worthwhile. The sixty recipes are adaptable so that they can be mixed & matched for any occasion one wishes. From the Christmas day turkey breast stuffed with Prunes & Chesnuts to the vibrant Tangerine juice Aperitivo, you will find all these recipes mouth watering. Lastly, the wine suggestions helped in the celebratory enjoyment that is the "heart & soul of Italian cuisine."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!
I just re-ordered this book as I lost the first one I bought. Contrary to what some other reviews have said, I like the fact that it is a small book with special or holiday recipes. I have several other Italian cookbooks, including the Silver Spoon and Essentials of Italian Cooking, and while I really like those books, the volume of recipes is often overwhelming when I am looking for a special holiday dish. So far I have made the broccoli saffriti, spaghetti all cozze (spicy spaghetti with mussels), Strangulapreti all sorrentina (Gnocchi with tomato sauce and Mozzella) and the pizzelles and they have all been great! Since I haven't made the other dishes I can not say how they will turn out, but so far I have not been disappointed. As for the book itself, it is truly beautiful and I enjoy looking at the pictures and reading about Mario's personal holiday experiences.

Based on my experience with this book, I am eager to buy Mario's other cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as always
While we ultimately didn't have the opportunity to make any of these recipes for the holidays, my wife and I read through most of them and they look wonderful. We own every cookbook Mario's written and we've eaten in two of his NYC restaurants, so we're very familiar with his style and the quality of his work.In fact, the "Feast of the Seven Fishes" in the book is very much like his Christmas Eve menu at Lupa, his place on Thompson St. in the Village.

Very high recommendation from real Italian "foodies" (we spent 3 weeks in Italy last year....)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous cookbook on Italian holiday food
I was really surprised by this small cookbook. Now when I saw small, it means that it isn't your typical full sized cookbook with in excess of 200 pages, it is a nice hundred pages or so cookbook. Some wonderful features of this cookbook are the pictures, the wonderful recipes, and the text that is written with the recipes.

Perhaps you are like me and enjoy cookbooks with vivid pictures.I like to know what my efforts are going to look like. This book has some of the best food photographs that I have seen. Some of this is the chosing of attractive dishes, some of it is just fabulous photography.

While I really enjoy the photographs in this book, some of that is the skill of the photographer, while the larger part of that is the choice of recipes. Mario Batali, seems to like earthy, rustic food.I like that you do not have to measure everything so exact.I like that there are natural flexibilities added into the recipes, like if you don't have xxx, use this instead.Italian cooking is all about the freshness of the ingredients, and you see this theme throughout his book.

I also like that he explains why he chose those recipes, what the significance of those recipes are. This is helpful is chosing what drinks you will serve with the food, what side dishes or desserts you will pare with the food and so much more.

I highly recommend this book to you, it really isn't just about holiday food, but more.I rate this book with 4 stars simply because the book is smaller, and for the money, if your just starting out with him, I would go with one of his standard cookbooks if you are looking for a greater resource of Italian recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feliz Navidad!
One of the women that I've admired most in my life is my favorite aunt.I've always adored her for her blue-black hair that shone iridescent in the sun, her sense of humor and her ability to throw remarkable, sometimes huge parties almost effortlessly. She is the only woman I've ever known who could and often did spend the entire afternoon before a bash in the pool.Daisy's Holiday Cooking makes it clear that Daisy Martinez is another hostess that may come very close to that class and she makes no bones about sharing her secrets with us.

I first came across Daisy while flipping channels on the TV, putting on a family dinner for her husband and children, a dinner thatfeatured a Flourless Chocolate Cake with Chile.Make no mistake - I love Latin food, I adore flourless chocolate cake and I am definitely a bit of a chile-head.Daisy's cake appears on page 36 of Daisy's Holiday Cooking: Delicious Latin Recipes for Effortless Entertaining and the one recipe is worth the price of the book alone, though I admit that I make this with ground hot New Mexico chile, not cayenne.

InDaisy's Holiday Cooking: Delicious Latin Recipes for Effortless Entertaining Daisy gives us menus & recipes for ten different occasions, ranging from a Soup & Sandwich Tree Trimming Party to elegant dinners. Most of her recipes are easy to do and few require hard-to-locate specialty ingredients.More than a few recipes are suitable for use year round.

The most valuable featureof the book, though, are Daisy's work plans. For each party, she gives a detailed outline breaking down the food preparation over several days and the book is chock-full of do-ahead tips for easy entertaining.Highly recommended, this is a must-have book for your own holiday library.Very reasonably priced, consider this top of your gift-giving list for those who love to cook & entertain. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday recipes
This book seems to have many good recipes for the holidays. I have not tried them yet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food
At first glance Every Day's A Holiday Diabetic Cookbook might seem a Christmas title - but it's far more; it promotes making every meal 'holiday' through flavorful, healthy food. Mr. Food is best known for his earlier 'guy food' books on how the basic bachelor male could whip up a gourmet meal with few ingredients or knowledge: with this and his prior Quick And Easy Diabetic Cooking, he moves in a healthier direction, lending his focus on flavor and speed and appeal to a diabetic's healthy requirements. From Garlic-Crusted Cornish Hens to Champagne Turkey, Creamy Spinach Soup and Balsamic Pork, the dishes sound complicated and fancy - but complicated, they are not! Packed with flavor and appeal - and some of the appeal lies in the super-quick preparation times!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book for weight loss
This book has been a blessing to me.Having lost some weight, I really wanted a book that emphasized great food and low cal. What better way than a book for diabetics. An easy way to reduce sugar and calories, even though I am not diabetic. And who better to bring you great food and EASY to prepare food than MR Food.I immediately made the chicken cordon bleu.Swore I'd never have time to prepare it late one evening and feed 3 starving children.Yet somehow it came together in 30 minutes and tasted amazing....better to me than restaurant eats and so easy!My picky kids loved it as well as the steak tips recipe....and they dislike veggies normally!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest cookbook ever
This is the greatest cookbook I ever brought and I recommend everyone who like delicous desserts there are some as Mr Food would say Oooh it's so gooood. I just got this book this week and it makes a great Holiday gift. And you don't have to be a diabetic to enjoy this good food.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sure everybody loves them.....
This book does have alot of great recipes in it, but that is because they are old standbys, at least at my house. I do enjoy the fact that it has the nutritional information listed, which I wish more recipe books would follow suit. And the little tips at the bottom of each page are interesting. Most all of the recipes are fairly simple and this would be a great starter book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipe book
I specifically looked for this book after I had tasted several recipes from it prepared by a friend. The items she cooked were absolutely delicious and looked really good to and I couldn't wait to buy the book for myself. Now that I have the book, I can see that the recipes are easy to prepare and I'm really looking forward to trying them out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding cookbook for the holidays and more
This is a great cookbook.Last night we went to a Christmas party and brought three of the appetizers from this book and everyone stood around the table until they were gone.We tried the Spicy Sausage and Chicken Liver Pate and it is the best I have ever had.Since the recipe made a large amount, the author suggested freezing extra in ramekins so I have a few ready for the next event. The Citrus Marinated Seafood was beautiful and elegant and very fresh tasting. The Baked Brie was extremely easy and turned out better than other baked bries I have done because it was just warmed for seven minutes.I have been so happy with everything I tried. The recipes are well thought out and the notes the author has included are always very useful.I am going to work my way through every recipe;the book is great for everyday cooking also because none of the recipes are difficult.I think this book is a gem and I am so glad I found it.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Delicious!
Incredible and delicious recipes are found in this book. I happened to pick it up for $5 at a store's endcap and what a steal! I had read the two Amazon customers' 5-star reviews as well before using the book, and now I'm also submitting my 5-star review to confirm them! I loved her advance preparations section which immensely helped with time management leading up to the big holiday. And also loved her suggested Holiday menu plans and tips.

When some of my proper relatives came over for Thanksgiving, they promptly lost their manners. They asked us if they could tear at the turkey before anyone else. We had left the roast open on the dining table to cool. haha. Then as soon as we brought each dish out they started to ravage at it like madmen and there were much oohs and ahhs about the taste of each dish. No complaints whatsoever. This recipe book has seriously elevated our Thanksgiving to the nth degree. Thanks Diane Rossen Worthington, you're simply awesome! Here are the dishes we made and all of them were excellent: Baked Brie with Toasted Almonds and Cranberry Glaze, Crispy Bacon-Wrapped Stuffed Dates, Spicy Jalapeno Cornbread, Perfect Mashed Potatoes, Cranberry-Pomegranate Sauce with Satsumas, Roast Turkey with Maple-Balsamic Butter Rub, Cornbread, Oyster and Red Pepper Stuffing, Brisket with Figs and Butternut Squash, Pan-seared Sea Scallops with Tomato-Vodka Sauce and Apple Clafouti. We're now looking forward to using this book for our Christmas in a month!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious food for entertaining at many fall and winter holidays.
You buy this thinking you are just going to simplify your life, but the food is REALLY good.I thought "holidays" might only mean Christmas, but it also included Halloween, Hanukah, Thanksgiving, New Years, so you can entertain for many audiences with effort concentrated on a few good ingredients. My personal favorite recipes, in no particular order, were Polenta with Butternut Squash and Chestnuts (which the author suggests you could stir Marscapone Cheese into); Baked Pasta with Tomato, Red Pepper, and Sweet Italian Sausage; Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie with Caramel Sauce; Cranberry and Pear Custard Crisp; and Pumpkin Waffles. There is a tremendous variety. The recipes give you a lot of bang for fewer ingredients and invested time than you would expect given the results. Many recipes have notes on how to prepare all or part of the dish in advance and variations that you could try. There are also menu suggestions in the front using recipes in the books, so that you could have a very successful dinner party, cocktail party, etc. only preparing a few dishes.I found it avery enjoyable cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously Simple Thanksgiving
I bought this to simplify a Thanksgiving dinner for twenty we were cooking in a rented house with unknown kitchen supplies.Every dish turned out great. The recipes are simple, but the results look and taste like things that require far more effort.Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Im not into holidays and celebrations and I bought this recipe because it has one specific recipe in it that I happened to be looking for what it was I cant remember.Anyway I say all that to say I ended up coming across a great book with alot of good tasty recipes in it.nava Atlas has done it again I am a fan of her books and she never lets us(vegans) down. This a good book to add to your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
As thanksgiving is only a few days away and I pulled out this cookbook once again to look for some ideas on what to take to my relatives (who are not vegetarians but are getting to like the ideas better) I thought I better write a review. This is a great cookbook and as I mentioned, I pull it out at certain holidays, either when I'm cooking a full vegetarian celebration dinner or when I'm just bringing a couple of dishes over to our relatives houses.

The chapters in the book are actually the celebratory event:
New Years, Valentines Day, Easter & St. Patricks Day, Passover, Mothers day and Fathers day, memorial day, etc etc

Within each chpater there are a couple of different menus, usually 3 or 4 so you have some variety on what to pull together. For thanksgiving, for example, the menus are:A family Thanksgiving, A Harvest Feast for friends, Substitite Main dishes for thanksgiving dinner, and Substitite Stuffings

There are breads, salads, main dishes, side dishes, the whole works.Everything I've made so far has been great.I still use my other cookbooks at holidays too but this one definitely has the right dishes paired up with the different themes of the holidays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes, but *NOT* updated from original version
Like all of Nava Atlas's books, this one is wonderful, filled with clear descriptions and phenomenal recipes with an eye toward good health. My one and only quibble is that the recipes are hardly "updated" as described on the cover ... I went through it page by page comparing it to the original version, but the only changes I could find were to delete "water" as an ingredient, and to change "margarine" to "reduced-fat margarine" -- which hardly seems worth the cost of a new book; mine is going right back to Amazon. However, if you don't already own the original version, I highly recommend this book for uniquely delicious recipes (many of them kid-pleasing, and appealing to omnivores as well as vegetarians) designed to promote good health, with as little fat and sodium as possible without sacrificing flavor.Although I own almost every vegetarian cookbook in print (no exaggeration), this is one of my all-time favorites, and most dependable ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars menu planning, not just recipies
this book provides recipies grouped into entire menus. no more finding a recipie for a dish you like and not being able to figure out what to serve with it. this book also provides step by step directions for preparing dishes ahead of time. perfect for entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERY RECIPE IS GREAT!
This is the cookbook I've turned to again and again -- it has the most food stains of any cookbook in my collection, which is a good sign! I had no idea vegetarian cooking could be so tasty until I bought this. Not asingle recipe has been a disappointment, and what a great idea to organizethem according to traditional celebrations. I cannot recommend this bookhighly enough! ... Read more

In A Treasury of Jewish Holiday Baking, Goldman definesJewish cooking as a combination of influences from religious laws, holiday and seasonal events, what is locally available, andcross-cultural adaptations created as Jewish families movedaround. She also explains much about Jewish dietary law and other foodcustoms.

Holidays, in particular, call for foods with symbolic aswell as sensory resonance. This leads to baking a special,spiral-shaped challah--a reminder of life's continuity. This egg breadis reserved for the Sabbath and most holidays, while triangularHamantaschen, a pastry resembling the three-cornered hat of the evilHaman, are unique to the lively holiday of Purim.

Novice cooks willappreciate Goldman's list of "Winning Recipes for the BakeryChallenged." Her discussions of yeast (five pages) and sensibleequipment (seven pages) are an education for any baker, while everyonewill enjoy her killer frozen cheesecake, which you can keep forunexpected guests; flourless and rich, rich Espresso Truffle Torte;and Smoked Salmon, Dill, and Cream Cheese Pizza. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bakers' Book All Around
Someone referred me to this book for baking recipes. It's a great cookbook for bakers especially, whether or not they're Jewish. It also has some wonderful non-baking recipes -- the sweet and sour meatball recipe was fantastic.I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves to bake.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very delectable best!

Marcy Goldman never fails me. Her breads, her cakes, her photos, her hints, her encouragement, her cookies, her tartlets and her guiding spirit are all there. This time, in the 10th Anniversary Edition, she has added a new bonus chapter to her baking wonders, reflecting her " savory cooking."
The extensive 24 or so pages of Introduction, Ingredients and Equipment information will have you underlining her important practical advice. This book is a classic!
Each year, our family prepares her famous " My Trademark, Most Requested, Absolutely Magnificent Caramel Matzoh Crunch" which she and we call "sublime." A popular Seder dessert is the "Mock Chestnut Torte" which, needless to say, contains no chestnuts.I own close to 1000 cookbooks and she is absolutely one of my favorite cookbook writers!
Go ahead, try the challahs, the varied hamantaschens, the coffee cakes, the cholent and anything in the tome and you will only hear "oohs and ahs" from your admiring tasters.
What a find! What a gift! If you have a dog-eared copy of the Jewish Holiday Baking book on your active cooking bookshelf, run out and buy this 10th Anniversary Edition as it will only add to your year long holiday enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Festival Cooking
This is a great book with loads of information.Recipes are easy to follow and have staight forward directions.
I have tried a number of the recipes and they are very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, that guy didn't get this book at all!
Only for Jewish Festivals, one of the reviewers said???
Trust me -- once you make the gorgeous & fabulously savory Spinach-Feta Quiche with Fresh Basil;the Melt-in-your Mouth Breakfast Scones, the super-easy, berautiful-to-look-at Chicken with Dates & Twelve Garlic Cloves, the Persian roasted chicken in saffron & lime juice, the Frangelico and hazelnut truffles, honey brownies, brioche French toast, fresh corn casserole --or even the salad of goat cheese & figs, avocados in fresh beet salad, basmatic rice with tree spices & dried fruit -- I could go on and on -- you won't save these recipes just for the festivals.I'm the co-author, and I make the recipes all year round, some for special occasions, some just 'cause I feel like it (and actually, I make the quiche with variations every time I go to a pot-luck!).

This is a truly global-ethnic-healthy Jewish cookbook, influenced as much by our years in Israel(Phyllis is a celebrity culinary writer & consultant in Israel) --as by our own remarkable family heritage. You won't find any calls for margarine, or chemically-created "non-dairy creamer" here -- just incredibly delicious, sensuously pleasing foods in a book that is so rich with lore, you can read it just for the sheer and joyous adventure of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every recipe a gem
I have now tried almost every recipe in this collection. Every one has been absolutely delicious ... Instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the commentaries are wonderful. It is now my favorite present -- my non-Jewish friends who have eaten dinners chez moi with recipes from this collection have also ordered the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook not just for holidays.
Where did the tradition of eating Kreplach on the Purim originate? Why were pomegranates, of all fruit, adopted for the Shehecheyanu on the second day of Rosh Hashana? You'll find all of this information in this cookbook.

Some holiday foods, say the Glazers, have rabbinic sources. For other foods it is a question of putting your prayers where your mouth is, like the Rosh Hashana honey cake for a sweet year. Other foods have become part of the tradition by word association. Carrots, say the Glazers, are associated with Rosh Hashana because the Hebrew word "gezer" is reminiscent of "gzar din" - we should be judged for a good year.

These and many other bits of Jewish food lore make this cookbook not only a treasure of Jewish traditions and a collection of great recipes, but a truly great read. The recipes are conveniently organized in menus and the ingredients are highlighted in red print. Each dish is gender-coded "M" for meat, "D"and "P" in the menu.

Like the Jewish year, The Essential Book of Jewish Festival Cooking starts with Pesach. There is a treasure of 31 Pesach recipes in 40 pages.

The Glazers quote liberally from their mama's Ashkenazi kitchen, but Sephardic folk traditions are not neglected. Maimonides, we are told, suggesting sipping honey water as a 12th century Viagra. Find this tip in the Tu B'Av chapter, the holiday of love.

The foods of the holidays, say the Glazers, are closely entwined with the agricultural growth cycle in the Land of Israel. The fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices that abound in Israel at the time of year were integrated into the lore of the holiday. During the exile from Israel our food traditions continued to be linked to the land of Israel. This is a nice thesis, but I am not so sure about some of her examples.

This Jewish tradition foodbook/cookbook is a book that you'll use in the kitchen or you'll read curled up with on the couch and discover a thing or two about Jewish food traditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, but may not be the most useful.
`The Essential Book of Jewish Festival Cooking' by Phyllis Glazer and Miryam Glazer and `The New Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Gloria Kauler Greene are two leading representatives of a great cookbook subgenre which may be unique among all cookbook flavors in that they represent that extraordinary relation between Judaism and food. Like the exceptional `Jewish Holiday Cookbook' by Joan Nathan and unlike the encyclopedic `New York Times Cookbook of Jewish Recipes', both books spend much space and words on the practice of kashrut or keeping kosher. But this is not the whole story. There are numerous Jewish culinary traditions which are not directly related to kashrut, such as the traditions surrounding the number of challah loaves baked for the Shabbat or the number of bumps on the challah loaves (The magic number here is 12, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, so the tradition is to have 12 loaves. More practical is the tradition to have two loaves each with 6 bumps created by the braiding of the bread before baking.)

There is one major difference among these three books which is evident in their titles. Ms. Glazer's book deals with `festival' cooking while Nathan and Greene deal with `Holiday' cooking. The subtle difference here is that the festival book does not cover Shabbat and the two `holiday' books do.

To a non-Jew, my guess is that since there are 52 shabbats in a year, while there are at most seven or eight major `festivals', it is much more important to have a book covering Shabbat as well as the yearly holidays. Between Greene and the Glazers, I find at least one other big difference in that Ms. Greene gives far more coverage to the creation of challah, which may be the single most important Jewish holiday recipe in any of these books, as it seems to be the one food which tradition calls for at every Shabbat. In fact, even though Joan Nathan's book combines two books, one of which is on Jewish holiday baking, Ms. Greene's treatment of challah, at least in the details she give for braiding several different numbers of dough strands is the most extensive. Among the recipes from the three books, the amateur bread baker in me prefers Ms. Nathan's recipe, as it uses the least (1 packet) yeast and calls for the longest raising time. She (and Ms. Greene) also use my preferred `active dry yeast' rather than the `rapid rise' yeast.

All three books deal in depth with Jewish holiday traditions, although Ms. Glazer and Ms. Greene seem to have better rabbinical sources and seem to be more dedicated to the details of the traditions. Of the three, Ms. Greene seems to touch me more effectively in her discussion of these traditions than the other two.

All three writers are primarily from the Ashkenazy tradition, although all three also give fair treatment to Sephardic dishes and menus. If you are really interested in Sephardic menus primarily, Ms. Nathan spends much of her space on Sephardic menus.

If you are willing to take a recommendation from a goyem, I recommend Ms. Greene's book most highly, followed by Ms. Nathan's book for her many baking recipes; however, all three are quality books.

Product Description
In Jewish Holiday Cooking, Jayne Cohen shares a wide-ranging collection of traditional Jewish recipes, as well as inventive new creations and contemporary variations on the classic dishes.  For home cooks, drawing from the rich traditions of Jewish history when cooking for the holidays can be a daunting task.  Jewish Holiday Cooking comes to the rescue with recipes drawn from Jayne Cohen's first book, The Gefilte Variations -- called an "outstanding debut" by Publisher's Weekly -- as well as over 100 new recipes and information on cooking for the holidays.  More than just a cookbook, this is the definitive guide to celebrating the Jewish holidays.  Cohen provides practical advice and creative suggestions on everything from setting a Seder table with ritual objects to accommodating vegan relatives.  The book is organized around the major Jewish holidays and includes nearly 300 recipes and variations, plus suggested menus tailored to each occasion, all conforming to kosher dietary laws.  Chapters include all eight of the major Jewish holidays -- Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, Passover, and Shavuot -- and the book is enlivened throughout with captivating personal reminiscences and tales from Jewish lore as well as nostalgic black and white photography from Cohen's own family history. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Recipes But Bad Index
The Index at the back of the book is the worst I have ever seen in a cookbook. No page numbers for sub-entries.What's the deal with this???

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Holiday Cooking: A Food Lovers Treasury of Classic and Improvisations
Refreshing new twist on the old family recipes! A beautiful book and easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for People of All Religions!
This is a truly wonderful cookbook and an asset to anyone who loves food, regardless of their religious affliation. I am not Jewish, but having been born and raised in New York City I grew up loving classic Jewish dishes. This book covers them all, and goes one step further by reinventing these classics into truly gourmet masterpieces.Who would have thought that kugel could be transformed into a whimsical dessert such as Double Ginger-Caramelized Pear Noodle Kugel?! With wonderful stories and illustrations interwoven throughout the recipes, this book is a must have for any food lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars kosher for today
I especiall y like the improvisation part. Here, In Gainesville, FLthere is no kosher restaurant and kosher food is not easyto find. One ca never get a fresh kosher chicken here, only frozen.
The bok could use a few e-mail addresses where one can get kosher foods shipped wit h their price and estimated amount of potage for shipping.Thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...but lots of repeats from "The Gefilte Variations"
This is a very fine cookbook--Jayne Cohen writes beautifully and her recipes are innovative and excellent. However, I was quite disappointed to find that many of the recipes in the book--and even the headnotes--are just reprints of recipes from her previous cookbook, The Gefilte Variations: 200 Inspired Re-creations of Classics from the Jewish Kitchen, with Menus, Stories, and Traditions for the Holidays and Year-Round.If you already own The Gefilte Variations, you may not want to purchase this cookbook, too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Mostly for the U.K.
I found this book most helpful if you are looking for cookery courses, shops and resources in the U.K. The section on other countries is worth a look, but not detailed enough and does not include many opportunities in other countries. I know of at least one school in Europe that was not listed. The book's smaller pocket size is handy, but does not make for scads of info. Make sure it is what you need! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not fancy but wholesome jewish oriented recipes from around the world
This was once of the first cookbooks I got to use and start cooking so many years ago. Since my family usually only had fish, Italian and mostly jewish meals (I am from New England) there were many things I never tried. Ithink the first one I tried was a Persianchopped lamb dish (very good) . Iwas hooked to try more. Choosing from the holiday or country recipes I tried a few more.I just tried the chopped chicken livers but it was a little bland so I took it to another level. Greece, North Africa and other countries are represented and they are good to getting started with. Each chapter also has some jewish oriented fact and information that relates to the holiday or the country. Good solid jewish recipes here. Looking for out of the way different from the ordinary well this might not be the one for you. But it is a good start like it was for me to get to know cuisines and jewish food from other countries. ... Read more
