    By JAMES REED, Standard-Times correspondent
NEW BEDFORD If you had popped in at the Casa da Saudade branch of the New Bedford Public Library last night, you would have found anything but peace and quiet.
In their place, there were the swelling strands of Cape Verdean morna music, a lively Crioulo language lesson, samples of typical island cuisine and a 60-member audience composed of more children than adults.
In an attempt to educate its adolescent patrons, the Casa da Saudade held another one of its monthly Stay-On-Track multicultural presentations last night.
Previous presentations have looked at Native American traditions and religious diversity, but last night Cape Verde got the full treatment.
"The idea was to bring the Cape Verdean culture to the children who come to our library," said Maria Jose P.H. Carvalho, the library's manager. "We try to keep these programs light and not too academic for the children." That said, a few guest speakers discussed some lofty topics, such as the future of the Cape Verdean language and the difference between major and minor music scales.

Author explores European aspect of Cape Verde culture
By Monica Allen, Standard-Times staff writer
NEW BEDFORD Americo C. Araujo delves into America's most thorny issue race in his self-published book "Little Known: The European Side of Cape Verde Islands."
Mr. Araujo, who teaches Spanish and Portuguese at New Bedford High School, said he has wanted to write the book for more than a decade because he has spent most of his life explaining what it means to him to be Cape Verdean.
He contends that most Americans and even some Cape Verdeans know little about the European ancestry of a number of Cape Verdeans.
"Through the years I have heard many and varied points of view as to who the Cape Verdean is, enough to fill a volume," he writes in the paperback that was published this year by his own company, DAC Publishers. "Very seldom have I heard a correct interpretation. Most have been the incorrect view that all Cape Verdeans are neither black nor white."
Mr. Araujo maintains that while the majority of Cape Verdeans are people of mixed African and European descent, there is a small minority of people who descended from Europeans and another minority who descended from Africans. To get a full picture of Cape Verdean culture, people must understand these minorities as well, he writes.

Twenty two Boston College students spent last week's semester break in a climate where warmth was abundant - and not just because of the weather. Accompanied by Dean of Student Development Robert Sherwood, the students journeyed to Cape Verde, a small group of islands off of Africa's west coast, for a spring break community service project. The trip was sponsored by the University's Cape Verdean Student Association and modeled after the Ignacio Volunteer Programs run by the University Chaplaincy, which focus on working with the poor in underdeveloped countries. Boston College students Amilcar Lopes '98, and Panette Tucciarone '98, paint one of a series of murals on a playground wall in Cape Verde last week. It was one of several services the students performed while in the country. (Photo by Robert Sherwood) Cape Verdean Student Association president Paulo Abu-Raya '96, who led the trip to his native island of St. Vincent, said the association's main objective is to promote diversity on campus and educate people about Cape Verde culture. While he is proud of the many speakers and social events the group has sponsored, he felt that a first-hand experience to show his fellow students the reality of life in Cape Verde would be "worth a thousand lectures." The best way to give students such an experience, he thought, was to organize a service trip where they could immerse themselves in the culture and help the people at the same time.

    http://expedition.bensenville.lib.il.us/Africa/CapeVerde/culture.htm
    Cape Verde - Culture Overview
The first forced migration to Cape Verde involved the Fulani and Mandingo peoples from what is now Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. The majority of the population today are Crioulos, descendants of mixed Portuguese and African parentage. Africans form almost a third of the population, and another 1-2% are white. There are many more women than men in Cape Verde because most of those who emigrate to find work are male. Portuguese is the official language, but most people speak Crioulo (Creole), an archaic Portuguese dialect with much African influence. Virtually everyone is nominally Roman Catholic.
Many of Cape Verde's cultural landmarks recall the Portuguese colonial government. Mindelo is the largest city, and parts of it are reminiscent of a Portuguese provincial town. The village of Paul on San Antao also contains an expanse of perfectly preserved Portuguese architecture. The living culture of Cape Verde is visible in the elaborately terraced hillsides that people have created in order to farm on the steep volcanic slopes of the islands. On these terraces the houses cling to the mountains at some distance from each other, while in the coastal villages they cluster together at the water's edge.
