5-0 out of 5 stars If you're researching Cape Verde, you MUST find this book!
Deirdre Meintel's anthropological work on Cape Verde is an invaluable tool to use in any other scholarly historical or anthropological research. Not to mention being a good read all by itself. Meintel has a fluid writing style, and her research results are relevant, well-informed, and captivating. The Cape Verdes are fascinating islands, and their cultural flavor has been captured infrequently or in too-little detail by most other related works. Her work is an excellent source of information, and I highly recommend it to anyone simply wishing to learn more about the Cape Verdes. It's a hard book to find, but LOOK FOR IT. It's worth it. ... Product Description

Cape Verde Women and Globalization employs critical ethnography and critical discourse analysis to explore what Cape Verdeans have to say about women’s lives in the era of twenty-first century globalization.  The authors investigate the economic and personal difficulties they face such as poverty, managing single mother-headed households, and violence.  They also examine the ways women resist the challenges globalization has brought to them especially through cultural expressions of batuku dancing and Creole language. Using the framework of Patricia Hill Collins’ intersectionality theory, Cape Verde Women and Globalization concludes that scholars need to make central the links among the concepts of oppression, resistance, culture, and gender in order to “see” the lives of women and especially in order to identify the bridges to political change. Each chapter also includes a “reflections on methods” section to reveal the journey the authors took in undertaking this project from its earliest conceptualization to their conclusions.

Excerpt: Cape Verdean Creole, also known as Kabuverdianu is a language spoken on the islands of Cape Verde. It is a creole language of Portuguese basis, it is the mother tongue of virtually all Cape Verdeans, and it is used as a second language by descendants of Cape Verdeans in other countries. The current designation of this language is "Cape Verdean Creole", but in everyday use the language is simply called "Creole" by its speakers.
