Links Walker Percy Walker Percy started his career as a doctor, and at the age of 26 he contracted tuberculosis while on the job. During his long convalescence, he read extensively, becoming particularly interested in Existentialist philosophy and the problems of authenticity, perception, and meaning in everyday life. He built his work as a writer (of both fiction and nonfiction) upon these interests, and has often been characterized as a "philosophical novelist." In this essay, Percy thinks through some of the problems of human perceptionthe way that we look at and take in our surroundings. In what ways do you think Percy's thoughts on tourism point to larger issues involving the ways in which we live, perceive, and understand? What kind of "traveler" do you think you are? Who Is Walker Percy?
