Of Reminiscences and Reflections , won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize in Music. As a conductor, Mr. Schuller travels throughout the world, leading major ensembles in widely varied repertory. As an educator, he has taught at the Manhattan School of Music and at Yale University, and served as head of the composition department at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood from 1963 until 1984. During the last fourteen of those years he was the Center's Artistic Director. In 1967, Mr. Schuller was appointed President of the New England Conservatory of Music in which he served until 1977. During his tenure at the Conservatory he helped reintroduce the music of Scott Joplin to the American public, in part through his development of the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble, which won a 1973 Grammy Award for its performance of Joplin's The Red Back Book . Since 1984 he has been Artistic Director of the Festival at Sandpoint, Idaho. Mr. Schuller has written dozens of essays and four books, including the encyclopedic study

Gunther Schuller (born 1925, New York City) has developed a musical career that ranges from composing and conducting to his extensive work as an educator, jazz historian, administrator, music publisher, record producer, and author. In 1943, at the age of seventeen, Mr. Schuller was principal French horn with the Cincinnati Symphony; two years later he was appointed to a similar position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1959 he gave up performing to devote himself primarily to composition. Among other awards, Mr. Schuller has received the Pulitzer Prize (1994), the Darius Milhaud Award, the Alice Ditson Conducting Award, the Max Rudolf Award of the Conductors Guild, the Rodgers and Hammerstein Award, and numerous honorary degrees. In 1989 Mr. Schuller was honored by Columbia University with the William Schuman Award for lifetime achievement in composition; in 1991 he was granted a coveted MacArthur Fellowship; in 1993 Downbeat Magazine honored Mr. Schuller with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to jazz and elected him to the Downbeat Hall of Fame; in 1994 Musical America named him Composer of the Year.

In zijn vroege jeugd studeerde zoon Schuller fluit, later ging hij over op hoorn. Hij ontwikkelde zich verbluffend snel, want al na twee jaar kreeg hij een orkestplaats. Hij heeft geen enkele school of opleiding afgemaakt en bezit dan ook geen enkel diploma. Op zijn 17e werd Schuller 1e hoornist van het Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, twee jaar later van het Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Ondertussen werd er ook al gecomponeerd, maar pas echt goed, toen hij zijn baan als hoornist opgaf. Toen ontstonden onder andere een Concert for Orchestra , een vioolconcert, een trompetconcert, een opera en de bekende Symphony for Brass and Percussion , waarvan het Philip Jones Brass Ensemble de eerste uitvoering gaf. Schuller heef de term third-stream-music ingevoerd. Hij bedoelde ermee een vermenging van jazz en klassieke muziek, zoals hij die in veel van zijn eigen werken demonstreerde, of praktizeerde. Ook in theorie trouwens, in zijn boeken over muziek, speciaal die over jazz. Al deze activiteiten, het schrijven over muziek, het schrijven van muziek, uitvoeringen als hoornist en als dirigent op het gebied van de jazz hebben Schuller tot een bekende persoonlijkheid in het Amerikaanse muziekleven gemakt.
