He had been a lawyer in Nashville, Tenn., and a U.S. senator for eight years when President Andrew Jackson appointed him secretary of war in 1828. In 1831, a controversy involving his wife, Peggy O'Neill Eaton, and the wives of other cabinet members led him and the rest of Jackson's cabinet to resign. President Jackson then appointed his old friend governor of the Florida territory. Eaton's short term in Florida was not a happy one. He arrived more than seven months after his appointment began. A year later, in 1835, the Second Seminole War broke out. After serving less than two years, Eaton left Florida in 1836 to become U.S. minister to Spain, remaining until 1840.     Extractions: Myths and Hymns by Deborah Kravetz I really liked Adam Guettel's Floyd Collins. It had a book, definite characterizations, complex musical composition in a variety of musical styles that included 1920’s pop, a sense of humor, suspense and interesting staging—all integrated into a coherent, vaguely opera-like whole. Myths and Hymns (performed previously at New York's Public Theater under the working title Saturn Returns), is no Floyd Collins . I’m not sure what it is. With no book, minimal characterization and narrative, don’t try to call this a musical. Rather, take a set of songs springing from Greek myths and bible texts, inspired by a yearning for transformation. Hints of lovely orchestration can’t overcome the strangely tuneless flowing melodies earnestly presented by a cast of eight enthusiastically, but occasionally stridently. Scrims, ladders, projections and lots of walking around keep this from appearing too static, but it still seems strangely bare and scrimped. Only the floating picture frames evoke the suggested narrative of seeing oneself in one’s dreams. The individual songs usually start off well, but just when I am hoping for a melodic line I can follow, it veers startlingly off, as if the composer were trying too hard to avoid a replicable melody. The unexpected jumps and turns distracted me from the lyrics, and that and the movement distracted me from the music. The composer seemed to work most comfortably in the gospel style, but there was disconcertingly too much of the 1970s Broadway pop-rock style cropping up for this piece to seem either classical or modern.

He joined the orchestra at the age of twenty-five, following a short period with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, and was appointed Principal in 1992. During his career John has worked with the world's most renowned conductors and singers and taken part in many notable performances, including such highlights as Der Ring des Nibelungen and Die Meistersinger with Bernard Haitink, Otello and with Carlos Kleiber, and Der Rosenkavalier with Solti. John Payne has played Peter Eaton Elite clarinets since 1994 and wrote, shortly afterwards, "I thought that I'd put in writing how much I'm enjoying these instruments now that I'm settling down on them. I'm especially pleased with the accuracy of intonation and overall pitch, which makes them very comfortable to play on in the Opera House Orchestra. The combination of this and the bigger sound I'm now getting gives me a feeling of being liberated, after fighting the limited dynamic range available on my old instruments. I am confident now that if a conductor asks for more, it is there, in reserve. The feedback from other players has been uniformly positive too, which is very gratifying. It has made for great unanimity in the section, with three of us using Peter Eaton clarinets."
