Bach Ontving zijn schoolopleiding aan de Thomasschool in Leipzig en zijn muzikale vorming (compositie, klavierspel) van zijn vader. Van 1731 tot 1738 studeerde hij rechten te Leipzig en Frankfurt a.d. Oder. Zijn eerste composities schreef hij op 18-jarige leeftijd. In 1738 kwam hij aan het hof van de latere Frederik de Grote, die hem na zijn troonsbestijging in 1740 meenam naar Berlijn, waar hij hofmusicus en -clavecinist werd. In deze kwaliteit trad hij regelmatig op als begeleider van de vorst, die een verdienstelijk amateurfluitist was. Componisten als zijn broer Johann Christian , F.W. Rust en J.A.P. Schulz behoorden hier tot zijn leerlingen.

Zijn muzikale educatie ontving hij van zijn vader. In Leipzig en Frankfort aan de Oder studeerde hij rechten. In 1738 kwam hij in Berlijn in dienst van Frederik van Pruisen. Hij gaf pianoles, en les aan zijn broer Johann Christian, die van 1750 tot 1754 bij hem in huis woonde. Carl Philipp Emanuel schreef het bekende . In 1767 werd hij kapelmeester, en na de dood van zijn vader probeerde hij diens opvolger te worden in Leipzig, maar daar slaagde hij niet in. Wel kreeg hij eenderde van zijn vaders muzikale nalatenschap toevertrouwd, die hij toegewijd beheerde. Na de zevenjarige oorlog wilde Carl Philip Emanuel Bach weg uit Berlijn, mede omdat de koning zijn belangstelling voor muziek begon te verliezen. In 1768 werd hij muziekleider aan de Hamburgse kerken (dit ambt was vrijgekomen door de dood van Georg Philipp Telemann), en vanaf toen wijdde hij zich volledig aan het schrijven van kamermuziek en optredens als klaviersolist. . Ook schreef hij dat het waren.

    Extractions: During this year's Holland Festival Early Music Ton Koopman performed a St Matthew Passion by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, which was thought to be lost, until it was rediscovered in the archive of the Berlin Sing-Akademie in Kiev in Ukraine, which is now catalogued by an international board of experts. Although it is interesting to hear this work in what is thought to be its original form, most of the music, in particular the ariosos and arias, isn't new at all. At the end of the 1760's Carl Philipp Emanuel worked at a Passionskantate which was based on a St Matthew Passion. This cantata is Die letzten Leiden des Erlösers , recorded years ago by Sigiswald Kuijken.
