5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for Bach figures/embellishments
The previous reviewer is referring to "part two" of this text, the portion which deals with counterpoint, etc. However, players of J. S. Bach will especially appreciate the first part of the text, which has a large chapter explaining the various embellishments which one finds in J. S. Bach's works; it is a fine reference for anyone playing music with Baroque markings for trills, turns, mordents, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars historically significant
This an historically significant work worthwhile for a number of reasons--of course--, but I am particularly interested in its treatment of figured bass. Why? Although it was composed after Rameau published hisrevolutionary theory of root progression, C.P.E. Bach repudiated Rameau'stheory, and this work remains untouched by it. Consequently, reading thisis the easist way to get a feel for how things stood before Rameau and(ironically for C.P.E. Bach) to appreciate truly Rameau'sachievement.

Book Description
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), the best known son of Johann Sebastian Bach, was the most original composer of the period between the Baroque era and the Classical period. He was one of the most brilliant keyboard players of his day and created the modern expressive school of piano writing which particularly influenced the two great Classical masters: Haydn and Mozart.C.P.E. Bach's music was widely known during his lifetime and is highly esteemed in testimonials of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and many others. In the twentieth century, the music of this unique artistic personality has received increasing attention, but of the composers's seven hundred or so vocal and instrumental works, nearly half are unavailable in modern editions and approximately one third have never been published. The need for a complete Urtext has long been recognized but not possible until all of the manuscript sources had been located and evaluated, a task completed by Professor Helm in 1981.Now, in the bicentennial year of the composer's death, the musical edition is well under way and should prove to be a major contribution to both historical performance and musical scholarship. ... Book Description
Perform timeless Piano works with The Plovdiv Chamber Orchestra! Perfect for practice, rehearsal, auditions, contest solos, performances, and more!Composed in 1748, this gorgeous and increasingly popular piece demonstrates the brilliance of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. It transcends its late baroque/early classical timeframe and is pervaded by a pensive quality and even a predisposition toward a romantic sensibility. Highly recommended and not of excessive difficulty (includes music with difficulty levels 3-7). This deluxe 2CD set includes a slow-tempo practice version to help you get up to speed.

Includes an authoritative, newly engraved music score on high-quality ivory paper; a digital stereo compact disc featuring a complete performance of the concerto with orchestra and soloist, and a second performance minus you, the soloist; and a second compact disc containing a full-speed version of the complete version as well as a special -20% slow-tempo version of the accompaniment for practice purposes. The concerto is voluminously indexed for your practice and performance convenience.

Book Description
C.P.E. Bach wrote twelve sonatinas for cembalo and orchestra between 1762 and 1764.Most of the movements are arrangements of his character pieces and are, therefore, quite different fromthe cembalo concertos he wrote during the same decade, even though both sonatinas and concertos are scored in a similar fashion.Like their prototypes, these sonatinas are stylistically varied--they are accessible and full of charming, sometimes playful, ideas intended to meet the demands of a middle-class public for entertaining music. The preparation of this volume is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent federal agency of the United States of America. ...
