Bach in Weimar geboren. Am 1. Oktober wird er als Student der Rechte an der Leipziger Universität immatrikuliert. Als eines seiner ersten Werke entsteht das "Menuet pour le clavessin", Wq 111/H 1.5. Konzerthalle nach ihm, die auch das weltweit einzige C.Ph.E.Bach-Museum beherbergt. Am 28. Juli stirbt Johann Sebastian Bach. Philipp Emanuel bewirbt sich vergeblich um die Nachfolge im Thomaskantorat. Veröffentlichung seines bedeutenden Lehrwerkes "Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen" (2. Teil, Berlin 1762). In Berlin erscheinen Herrn Professor Gellerts "Geistliche Oden und Lieder mit Melodien" in der Vertonung Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs. Der englische Musikhistoriker Charles Burney besucht Bach in Hamburg. (Im 1773 veröffentlichten 3. Teil seines "Tagebuches einer Musikalischen Reise" sind eine Schilderung dieser Begegnung und die Selbstbiographie Bachs enthalten.)

Standing in the shadow of his famous father, Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach is sometimes overlooked by historians for his ground-breaking keyboard Sonatas and his significant contribution to Protestant Church music in the second half of the Eighteenth Century. Most of his music is not as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the Eighteenth Century, C.P.E. Bach was known as the "Great Bach." He was the second eldest and the most famous of J.S. Bach's sons. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the Sturm und Drang movement of the late Eighteenth Century. Growing out of Baroque music, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel, and Telemann, and those of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
