Extractions: The debt that modern guitarist composers owe to the late Robbie Basho can hardly be overstated. Though Fahey invented the genre and Kottke proved its marketability, it was Basho's technique, vision, and self-image that resonated most strongly with Will Ackerman and the so-called New Age guitar movement he founded. It's a crime Basho's music hasn't been available on record for many years. Now older guitar fans can welcome back an old friend and newer ones can learn where it all came from on this beautifully edited CD of Basho's "greatest hits." Of all the young guitarists who recorded for Takoma in the Sixties and Seventies, Robbie Basho was the least influenced by label founder John Fahey. In an age when nonconformity was exalted, Basho qualified as a true eccentric, and the way he played the guitar and sang was unique. His fascination with things Oriental led him to take his name from a Japanese poet, and the influence of Indian classical music is often palpable in his guitar work. But Basho's use of this influence is original; like any artist, he takes what suits his needs to create the right atmosphere for his own creations to blossom. This overview of Basho's Takoma recordings was conceived by Fahey, whose evocative reminiscences greatly enhance our appreciation of a unique character and musician.

Mas depois desta outra ideia, apetece-me, embora sem a pôr de parte, partir para uma nova ideia. Esta não fala na diferença dos povos, mas na igualdade dos indivíduos. Fala na diferença das serras, dos ventos e dos feijões. Mas diz outra coisa. Diz isto: Não esqueças nunca O gosto solitário Do orvalho Eu não digo que qualquer um poderia ter escrito isto. Mas digo que Bashô (o autor do poema), podia perfeitamente tê-lo feito na serra da estrela. E que um pastor da Covilhã pode tão bem compreender o que ele diz (ou tão mal) como um praticante de artes marciais ou outra pessoa qualquer. Por isso, acabemos de vez com os exotismos! As serras são todas diferentes mas são todas de pedra; os povos são todos diferentes, mas vistos de longe são todos iguais; os indivíduos são todos iguais, mas vistos de perto são todos diferentes... mas, se olharmos a Terra na tal distância, nem tão longe, nem tão perto, não há serras, há sim uma camada agreste de terra toda cercada de mar.

Came to watch the sumÃ³ and do some practice... Haven't done any kÃ©iko prior to coming to the Land of SumÃ³ for a long, since I suffered a serious injury in practice about a month before, which brought me to the surgeon's table and into post-op rehab. So then though I decided, I was still too young to die: "Hell, I gotta get movin'..." So came to TÃ³kyÃ³... Extractions: 1st Aomori Worlds My trip to Fukuoka during KyÃºshÃº-basho 2000, and practice in Azumazeki-beya under Yokozuna Akebono and in Naruto-beya under Komusubi Wakanosato and Maegashira Takanowaka I went to Fukuoka, KyÃºshÃº, to watch days 6, 7, 8, and 9 of KyÃºshÃº-basho 2000, i.e. from Friday 10th November 2000 to Monday 13th November 2000. The trip was also a preparation of sorts for the 9th World SumÃ³ Championships to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday-Sunday 2nd-3rd December 2000. So... I went to practice to Naruto- beya and Azumazeki-beya camps in Fukuoka. I also visited Michinoku-beya's practice, but just to watch. Naruto-beya is quite interesting for practice, since the Oyakata is very talkative and likes to explain the exercises and talk to the rikishi to tell them what they are doing wrong, how they should go about it.

"Seek not to follow in the footsteps of men of old; seek what they sought," he once said. An adherent follower of Zen Buddhism , Basho's book of his travels The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1689), captured prose and haiku. "Long conversations beside blooming irises/ joys of life on the road," he wrote. The haiku poet or "haijin" described nature and life simply, with lightness, to create profound expressive poetic form. Basho's poetry brought spirituality and richness to haiku unheard of before his time. According to Japanese critic and scholar Makoto Ueda, "ideas on verse writing Basho insisted upon" were sabi (loneliness), shiori (pity), hosomi (slenderness), inspiration , fragrance, reverberation, reflection, and lightness. Creation of art comes from meditation and is a sacred form of expression.

He journeyed extensively, and composed his book of travels 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North' in a mixture of poetic prose and haiku. Basho demanded that a haiku must contain both a perception pf some eternal truth and an element of contemporaneity. P'u Sung-ling Chinese poet who wrote under the title 'Liao-chai chih-i' (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio) 431 charming stories of the supernatural. P'u Sung-ling humanized supernatural spirits so that they became - for the first time in Chinese fiction - likeable. He also wrote the longest Chinese novel, 'Hsing shih yin yuan', describing the unhappy marriage of a shrew and her henpicked husband. Saikaku , Ihara Japanese poet and novelist, born in Osaka. Critics rank him as second only to Murasaki in all Japanese literature. He won fame for his lightening speed in haiku compositions, he is said to have turned out 23,500 haikus in a single day in 1684, or 16 per minute. But Saikaku is best known for his novels, written with satirical humour. His masterpiece is 'Koshoku gonin onna' (Five Women Who Loved Love) describing the loves of women of the merchant class rather than prostitutes; this was the first time women of this class were given such attention. Tasso , Torquato Italian poet, born at Sorrento. He studied law but devoted himself to literature. He published his romantic poems 'Aminta' and 'Rinaldo', dedicated to Cardinal Luigi d'Este. While at the court of the Duke of Ferrara he wrote his greatest poem 'Gerusalemme Conquistata'. He later fell in disfavour and died in poverty.
