Excerpt: Alpine skiing at the 1998 Winter Olympics consisted of ten events held near Nagano, Japan. The speed events were held at Hakuba and the technical events at Shiga Kogen. There were a number of postponements due to weather; the races were run from February 10-21, 1998. The event was held on February 13, 1998 in Happo One, Hakuba. It was repeatedly postponed; run 5 days after originally scheduled. Temperatures approached 60°F (16 °C) at the finish by mid-race. All three medalists were among the first ten racers on the course. Fifteen of the 43 racers failed to finish, most notably pre-race favorite Hermann Maier of Austria. He started fourth, but flew spectacularly off the upper part of the course, gaining worldwide coverage. It was Jean-Luc Crétier's only career win in international competition. The event was held on February 16, 1998 in Happo One, Hakuba. The event was originally scheduled for three days earlier, but pushed back by the delays in the downhill. The event was held on February 19, 1998 in Mount Higashidate, Shiga Kogen, Yamanouchi. It was run a day later than originally scheduled. The event was held on February 21, 1998 in Mount Higashidate, Shiga Kogen, Yamanouchi.
