Like its teammates in the Dummies series, Hockey forDummies is cleverly organized and clearly focused, geared to bothfans and players. It is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10best things about the game, the 10 best players, the 10 best teams, and, given even a novice's inability to mistake hockey for Zen, the 10best hitters. Hockey for Dummies also contains plenty of good, practical advice: Wayne Gretzky offers a clinic on passing, MarkMessier hosts one on face-offs, Brian Leetch counsels players inclinics on defense, and Ron Hextall teaches goaltending. Authors JohnDavidson and John Steinbreder explain rules, discuss equipment, anddetail strategies. They even give pointers on how best toappreciate the game on television. It seems the only thing missingfrom Hockey for Dummies is a dental referral for the first timeone of your incisors gets in the way of an errant puck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to this book, I can say "bye, bye NBA"
I grew up a basketball fan.I'm not sure why my parents let that happen, but John Davidson has helped to correct one of their few mistakes.

As a junior at SUNY Oswego, I was elected sports director of the college's radio station and found myself in a position where I would have to call play-by-play for school's most popular sport: hockey. My parents purchased this book for me and it was a life/career saver.I went from a guy who didn't know what "the point," "the slot," or "the half-boards" were to an announcer who was considered to be among the best in division III college hockey (I'm not making it up! Check the [...] message boards and search my name.)This book, and [...] Joe Gladziszewski are largely responsible for that transformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know the rules
Very informative book.Know the rules and you can enjoy the game even more!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book.
Growing up in "winter country", my friends and I would often shovel-off some frozen pond out in the woods to skate and play a rather unorganized form of ice hockey. Now, I enjoy watching my grandson playing on a Mites team. However, I never really understood the game. What I have found, by reading this book, is that I now have enough information with which to talk hockey with my friends and get even more information on the sport from them. Going to professional and college hockey games is a real blast for me too, now that I understand more about the sport.

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied
Though it wasn't received as quickly as I had hoped, it was in excellant condition and well handled!

Product Description
This game wasn't about money, points, or trophies. Instead it was played for pride, both personal and national. It was a confrontation twenty years in the making and it marked a turning point in the history of hockey.

On December 31, 1975, the Montreal Canadiens, the most successful franchise in the NHL, hosted the touring Central Red Army, the dominant team in the Soviet Union. For three hours millions of people in both Canada and the Soviet Union were glued to their television sets. What transpired that evening was a game that surpassed all the hype and was subsequently referred to as "the greatest game ever played." Held at the height of the Cold War, this remarkable contest transcended sports and took on serious cultural, sociological, and political overtones. And while the final result was a 3-3 tie, no one who saw the game was left disappointed. This exhibition of skill was hockey at its finest, and it set the bar for what was to follow as the sport began its global expansion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As a coach who learned to play hockey as an adult, I'm always looking for more information. Many coaching books say the same things, and most leave out the kind of information that you probably would already know if you grew up playing the sport in organized leagues.By contrast, this book does an excellent job at pointing out things that may not be obvious to a new coach. It's extremely well-organized and well-written, with a mixture of theory and practical tips.

One of the best hockey coaching books out there, and definitely not just for dummies...

The most comprehensive guide to the art and science of goaltending

The past decade has seen a tremendous surge of interest in hockey. More colleges and universities have added programs. Hockey leagues are sprouting up in such unlikely places as Florida beach communities, New Mexico desert towns, and the Texas flatlands.

Coauthored by Jim Corsi, goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most comprehensive guide to mastering the most demanding hockey position: goalie. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience at all levels--from peewees to pros--Corsi explores all facets of goaltending. From the psychology of being a goalie to choosing and purchasing the right equipment for an individual's style and needs, to drills for improving timing, coordination, reach, and speed, Corsi covers all the bases with invaluable advice and guidance as well as tips and techniques for aspiring goalies, parents, and hockey coaches. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book for hockey moms
My son is 8 and just started playing goalie.I had NO experience with goalie equipment, skills or drills and being his assistant coach I was at a bit of a loss.
This book was recommended by a great senior goalie (50 year old female!!) and she was RIGHT ON.It covers everything one needs to know about goalies from head to toe.It has great drills and kid pics so the little guys can look at the picture and understand.
Of course being from Buffalo, we are huge Sabres fans so all of the pictures of past Sabre's goalies are GREAT!
I would recommend this book for young, old, new, expert and anyone who is interested in the position of netminder!

5-0 out of 5 stars A high school coach's opinion
This book along with Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord will provide enough information and differences of opinion for anyone from beginner to the high school level. The drills are very good and the "Ten Things" lists provide lots of insight.I can't recommend one book over the other because they complement each other so well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, wish there was more
This book is an amazing general overview of becoming a goaltender. the beginning of the books is more-or-less common sense for goaltenders that are already playing, but the middle of the books and the drills at the end serve as a great refresher course. If your a beginner, this book is great. If you want a refresher course in goaltending, you should also buy this. I believe that the only thing lacking in this book is a more in depth section on equipement. Not everyone understands what they are supposed to be looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch!
I used to play hockey when I was much younger and now that I am getting back into it, I wanted to get as many books and videos as possible to remember the old skills and to find out how much has changed since I used to play. Of all the books that I bought and read, this one was the best in my opinion. I felt that it went deeper into the "How's and Why's" of techniques than Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord, which is my second favourite book. The way that Jim Corsi presented the concept of the Goaltender's "toolbox" was excellent for getting the information to stick in my head.

Bravo, and thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endorsements
Several testimonials provided to the authors and publisher that are sure to be of interest.

Jim Corsi and John Hannon have written the most comprehensive goalie book I have ever seen.Jim has a great grasp of goaltender coaching and how the goaltending position has radically changed over the last decade.I, too, would encourage young goalies to study the game and learn as much as they can.

- Dominik Hasek, Buffalo Sabres & Detroit Red Wings

The approach to goaltending that Jim and John describe in this book has helped me understand the position better. As a head coach, I need to know that our goalies are well taken care of.Jim is both well liked and well respected by all of our goalies (from prospects to all-stars).Given the rich content of this book and the authors' attention to the smallest details, it is no wonder Jim is held in such high regard.

- Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres

In order for me to make the big jumps from major junior to the AHL and then the AHL to the NHL, it became increasingly obvious that I had to expand upon my save skill repertoire.Jim Corsi, applying the concepts he and John Hannon cover in this book, helped me improve and successfully make this transition. If you, too, seek to become a serious student of the goalie position, then read this book cover to cover. It will change your whole philosophy about goaltending and make you more and more effective.

Product Description
In this collection of lyrical essays, writer Jack Falla`s backyard hockey rink unexpectedly becomes a vital bridge to family and friends, a lens through which he looks at his life in a game he loves, a road leading back to the frozen ponds of a New England childhood and a mirror in which he stares down middle age. Or tries to. Essays in Home Ice range from a thoughtful, sometimes humorous account of Falla`s original attempts to build a rink - `The first law of Hydrodynamics as applied to rink owners: water seeking its own level fits in in your neighbor`s yard`- to a meeting with the world`s most famous backyard rink builder, Walter Gretzky, Wayne`s father. In other essays Falla skates with the ultimate pond skaters -hockey legends Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey, travels to Duluth, Minnesota and Thunder Bay Ontario to visit backyard rink builders, reflects on the death of a parent, the meaning of an early-morning skate with a grandchild, the connection between his 60-by-35 foot backyard rink and the magical Boston Garden, and the life lessons learned shoveling, resurfacing and skating with his wife, son, and daughter. A bonus chapter explains how to build your own backyard rink. Home Ice goes beyond being a sports book. It is a book for readers more interested in family, friends, and relationships than in last night`s hockey scores. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is why we love sports: Great stuff from the late Jack Falla
I wasn't a hockey player growing up.Basketball was my first love.My Dad put up a hoop in the driveway back in the early 70's, and the memories of playing 21, Horse, and three on three will last forever.Meeting neighbors and friends, playing by myself working on skills:those were the days.

And Falla's stories of his backyard rink inspire the same kind of love and committment to family and friends that my father's hoop did. What a wonderful book, made all the more important and influential by the author's passing away not too long ago.He was a wonderful writer who seemed to inspire many others through his life, teaching, and writing.

Thanks to Jack Falla...

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Ice
After reading the book I wanted to head right out and build the rink it was the spring thaw but I did clear out my back lot and leveled it got it ready for winter can't wait until the first freeze

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great One
I was geared up to read about the experiences the Fallas and their friends shared on the Bacon Street Omni. And Falla delivers the goods with humor and honesty, with wit and wisdom. But Home Ice, for me, has become more than a celebration of hockey and that which unites families and communities.

I, a relative newcomer to New England, didn't expect to learn so much about the Boston Bruins. I had heard of Orr and O'Reilly, of course, but I didn't grow up watching them as Falla did. He brings his memories of the Big Bad Bruins to life. Falla also mixes Black and Gold with the Oil. His skate with Wayne Gretzky enriches the book, giving it balance: the Great One juxtaposed to the average Joes who play on the pond.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Little Book
Even if you live in a climate that will never allow you to build a backyard rink, this wonderful little book should be read. In a age where youth sports are increasingly dominated by organization and structure and where the attraction of video games keeps kids inside on even the nicest of days, this book takes us to a place where play is unstructured, where one can lose themself in the early morning hours or under the stars, where family and friends can gather to play, skate and even sometimes compete, where the rituals of building, maintaining and disassembling the rink mark the passage of time.

Ultimately this book is as much about a family and a bond between them as is it about ice skating or hockey.Read, enjoy and take something away from the experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
A good easy read.A must have for hockey fans in New England and for builders of backyard hockey rinks. Not a big reader, but I couldn't put this on down.Very well written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for Ice Hockey Conditioning
Twist obviously knows what he is discussing.
This is a solid guide for training and conditioning for Ice Hockey.
It is the only conditioning guide you will need.
Use it and improve your game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Fitness.
The book was delivered to me within 5 days and was in excellent condition when I received it.
The book is excellent. It provides some great ideas for hockey fitness. The only draw-back is that a good portion of the book deals with on ice fitness exercises and unless you're a professional hockey player, it is very difficult to have a clean sheet of ice to yourself to work on conditioning. However, there is enough to keep you busy.

5-0 out of 5 stars This does the job
This is the book that has elevated the hockey game of a 33 year old goaltender.I've been using it for myself and for the midget hockey team I coach. It definitely gives the team the edge when the the drills are executed on a regular schedule during the season and off season. This is required reading for my youth team and it has not failed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Ice Hockey
This book is fantastic. The book is very complete, from beginning to end on the training and conditioning aspect. Not only did it include the fitness portion, but also nutrition, which I was surprised to see.

My only complaint is that each and every exersize should have photos. Most do, but not all of them. There are some exersizes that are not 100% clear on the proper technique.

Other than that it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Myriad of Exercises
Peter Twist says it right in the beginning, there is nothing quite like hockey. That makes it really tough to get in shape to play. Even if you're already in great shape, you're game could improve dramatically if you got into hockey shape. That is exactly what Twist tries to do.

The book is organized in such a way that the later chapters build upon the previous chapters. He begins by talking about energy and how we burn fuels different ways when playing hockey. Then he goes into stretching and strength training. If you have ever spent any time around a gym, you'll already know how to perform these movements. The payoff for this book is the plyometric. These are techniques used to help improve your agility and explosive movements. Let's face it, the team that can consistently get to the puck first usually wins. These exercises will provide you with a quick jump giving you an extra step over your opponent and the puck.

Twist writes simply, and his instructions are easy to follow. He uses photos generously when trying to explain complex movements. Both on-ice and off-ice exercises are provided so you don't have to be at the rink or have precious ice time to get into shape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey+magic+book= great book
I think the book Ice Magic was a great book because hockey and magic in one book is an extremely smart idea. My three favorite things are hockey and magic and reading, so I knew the book Ice Magic was right for me just by looking at the title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ice Magic
Ice Magic is a book about Pie Pennelli who plays hockey, but has oversized skates. Terry Mason is his other problem because when he falls on the ice, and misses a play Terry Mason always yells at him. His nieghbors found this toy hockey that they think is magic because whenever they play the game that is what happens in Pie's real game the next day. Terry teases Pie about how they think that the toy hockey game is magic. In the last couple of toy hockey games bad things are going to happen to Pie. In his last game of the season Pie's neighbors warn him that the second period is going to be bad. In the second period Pie's skates fall apart, and Terry's cat jumps onto the ice in the second period. When Pie's neighbors found the toy hockey game, a note was attached to it that said," Beware what happens on a real rink first, Repeats here not, for fate, Promises that, as true as bubbles burst, The magic will dissipate" which that whatever happens on a real rink first it will happen on this rink too, and then the magic will be gone. When Terry came over tothe twins house he brought his cat and the cat jumped onto the toy hockey game, and that was the sign that the magic was now gone. by Aaron Havard

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not one of Christopher's better books
This sports book by the prolific Christopher is a bit unusual in that it combines action in hockey with the uncertainty of magic. Pie Pennelli is a young hockey player with a problem; his skates are too large, slowing him down on the ice. His brother was a hockey player so he is wearing the skates that his brother used. Jody and Jolie are his friends and they have an indoor hockey game that is unusual. When they play it, the events of their game become the actual events of Pie's game.
While Pie has some moments on the ice, he also fails on occasion, facts always pointed out by his teammate Terry.Over time, the problems between Pie and Terry boil over, but they eventually patch things up and begin to play together outside the hockey arena. When Terry's cat wanders out on the ice during a game and then jumps on the indoor game, the magic spell is broken and there is no longer a correlation between what happens in the indoor game and on the ice.
This is not one of the better sports books by Matt Christopher; it is convoluted and occasionally disjointed. The combination of magic and hockey is not well integrated; everything is closed up at the end in a sudden manner without a climactic event or situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars magic of ice

Dan, 6th grader in Maine

Matt Christopher's Ice Magic is about Pie Pennelli and a magic hockey game his friends find in there basement.
This is a exciting book that i would recommend to kids 8 to 10.I give this book 3 stars because I think it is for younger readers. It was still a pretty good book to read, but it was a very easy book to read.
Iwould read another one ofMatt Christophers books butI would look for a more challenging book from this author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what this adult hockey student needed!
Ok, so I'm over 40 and have just been learning how to "hockey skate" and now I find myself in my first hockey "skills & drills" class at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, practice ice/facility of the Washington Capitals. This class is so popular, that it sells out well in advance and many of the 35+ students are repeats (as I will be for the next session).

I was lost - I'm not enough of a life-long hockey fan or past player who already understood the fundamentals and so many of the guys and gals already knew what they were doing.I felt like if I asked simple questions I'd be disrupting the flow of the class (shouldn't be that way, I know, but it's how I felt). So I bought a couple of books to bridge the gap in my ignorance.

I am SO PLEASED with this book - it was exactly what I was looking for! Chapter by chapter, it breaks hockey play down into the essential elements I needed to understand - offense, defense, positions, strategy, scenario-based plays, etc.It also went over several drills which means that when they were introduced in class, I had already been exposed to them in writing.

In the locker room after the second class, another newbie expressed the same concerns I was having.I shared my book with him and when he returned it the next week, it was like a veil had been lifted for him, too.I'm going to recommend that the instructors provide a copy of this book to every newbie, every session!

If you like to read an auto repair manual that breaks down the way an engine works or a computer/tech book that explains in plain English how to use your computer or build a web page, then you'll love this book, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Learn From
This book is truly a very good book for learning how to play the wonderful game of hockey both at the beginner level and advanced level. At the beginner level it shows and tell you how to skate, stop turn, foward and backward crossovers. It also has rules of the game which are especially helpful for the beginner level. It has drills that one should perform to get better. For the intermediate through advanced level it has even more drillsand techniques that even the beginners should get to know.It shows how to shoot the puck defensive, offensive and even goalie tactics. It has a conditioning with nutrition chapter, pregame stretches and even the mental game. And finally at the end it even tells you how to build a rink and how to organize and coach a team.Even if you think you know everything about hockey I can almost guarantee you there is something in this 220 page hockey-training masterpiece.I've been playing for only two years and I have learned a ton from this book and you will most definitely too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for new players
I've bought about 7 or 8 books on various aspects of hockey over the pastfew weeks, and each has taught me something, but I really needed one thatcould tell me *how the game is played* -- where I'm supposed to be and whatI'm supposed to be doing in different situations. This book did just thatby explaining the basics of offense and defense with both text andeasy-to-follow diagrams. I have a good overall sense of the game now, aswell as specific admonishments to keep in mind (like not to chase a puckcarrier behind the goal, and not to follow crisscrossing forwards whenbackchecking). I plan to read this book again in a month (after I've playeda few games on an organized team), and I fully expect to absorb even more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners learning the basics of ice hockey.
My team, the San Francisco Earthquakes, has several beginner players. Most of them had been to beginner hockey classes, but they still didn't know many of the basics. I set out to find a book that would provide these basiclessons and answer many of the new players' questions. I looked at severalbooks, but this one had the best fit. It is written for beginners, but willalso serve experienced players who need to review the basics. What to do,where to be, how to shoot, when to pass? These questions and many more areall answered clearly and simply. This is a book for beginners. Intermediateand advanced players may be looking for more insight than this bookprovides. My teammates now know what to do most of the time. If they'd onlyskate a little harder... ... Read more

A revealing look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of minor hockey culture

Known as TSN's "Hockey Insider," Canada's Bob McKenzie is synonymous with the sport and one of its most respected analysts. In Hockey Dad, McKenzie describes firsthand the joys and heartbreak of raising two sons, with entirely diverging athletic futures. He details their separate paths, describing Michael, a 22-year-old playing NCAA hockey on scholarship, and Shawn, now 19, whose competitive minor hockey life was cut short at age 14 because of multiple concussions. Their deeply personal stories, and the trials and tribulations of a father creating futures for them, offer readers a compelling look into the world and culture of minor hockey.

  • Includes funny anecdotes, debates on numerous hockey issues, and personal reflections on the game and its culture

With an unwavering look at his own strengths and weaknesses, as well as the entire system of minor hockey in Canada, Hockey Dad is an honest, irreverent and sometimes moving look at a sporting culture that is not so much a recreation as it is a way of life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True true confessions.....
The culture of being hockey parent is truly a mystery to anyone who has not been indoctrinated into the fold.Yes, some relate it to being a soccer parent, little league parent but there is nothing like waking up your little player in the wee hours of the morning, shoving something warm and nutritious into their mouths every time they yawn, driving to a rink in the dark, hauling out the gear and lugging it to a locker room located in the deep recesses of a rink; only to find you forgot your little player in the car..., dressing him/her while trying not to gag from the funky odor permeating the room. After all is said and done, you sit, feeling like a Popsicle, for an hour or more in a rink that doubles as the local freezer storage for the town.Afterward, you reverse the process of what you did an hour ago. Yep, nothing like being a hockey parent.Bob McKenzie hit the proverbial nail right on the head or should I say, one timed the frozen biscuit into the basket.Spending the whole weekend, camped out on a lawn chair at your local rink just for an opportunity to sign your little one up for an in house league? The stories he mentions in the book has all the hockey parents of the world nodding and laughing their heads off simultaneously. For those who have yet to wander down that path, are curious what makes a hockey parent tick or just want to get a good laugh, I highly recommend this book. It's a fast and easy read.I just picked up additional copies for our coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
A thoroughly entertaining and informative book that reads almost like a diary. I recommend it to all the hockey parents out there as well as their children when they're old enough to understand and appreciate all the trouble their parent's went through. Although it isn't preachy, there are stories with subtle morals that can be used by anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Dad; True Confessions of a (Crazy) Hockey Parent
Bob does a great job of sharing his view on being a parent, coach, and member of the world of youth hockey and sports in general. He reminds us in many suttle and not so suttle ways at the end of the day, its just a game. That being the case, our goal as parents and coaches is to simple embrace our kids and encourage them as they use sports to develop their character. Must read for anyone involved in youth sports. Must read even if you're nothing more than a simple parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ANY HOCKEY FAN WHO IS ALSO A DAD!
This is a must read for any hockey fan who is also a dad. Bob M. is my hockey GOD! I have watched him for many years and have always put my 100% complete faith in his knowledge of the game. His information is timely and is a big help in my keeping up with the current situations that arise during the hockey season.

If you are a dad and especially a hockey dad you will feel what Bob feels when it comoes to his sons and their hockey lives. He is a proud dad and his sons are so lucky to have an "in" when it comes to the inner workings of hockey at ALL levels.

There are dozens of new hockey books being published these days and the FIRST one that should be on your reading list is HOCKEY DAD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Not only does this book provide you with detailed drills , it backs it upwith specifics on what areas the drill works on , and highlights. It alsohas well written introductions on individual areasand the skills neededto to become a better offensive player , well worth the time to read anddigest the knowledge it provides .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I haven't read many books about hockey coaching, but after recieving this book, I'm pretty happy with it.It teaches you the basic shooting principles and spends some time on each type of shot. Then it goes into sections about buildings skills for each type of offensive play your team might need to work on: 1-1's, setting up plays, etc.A good variety of drills are offerred in this book and the nice thing is you can photocopy them out one by one because they are restricted to facing pages - so that you don't have to carry the whole book around.I'll be using these drills with my kids roller-hockey team and I think it will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources I've come across
Santa dropped this one in my stocking. It's great, particularly if you are searching for half-ice drills -- about half of the 75 drills are designed for half-ice.The strength of this book is its emphasis on puck movement to create scoring chances. The corollary is also true -- by emphasizing movement on the attack, goaltenders also improve their positioning and mobility. The drills are well-suited to kids aged 9 and up. I have shared the book with other coaches and, perhaps the strongest endorsement --my house league hockey association has ordered copies for all of our coaches! ... Read more
