After a 13-week trial, James McDougal was found guilty of 18 of 19 charges of fraud and conspiracy against him; his ex-wife, Susan, was found guilty of all four charges against her; and Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker was found guilty of two of seven charges against him. The governor said he would resign on or before July 15 in order to pursue appeals. ( 1.1M QuickTime movie Tucker, who was not directly involved in the Whitewater deal, was convicted of fraud and conspiracy for his part in a deal involving the purchase of a water and sewer utility owned by a subsidiary of Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan, which was owned by the McDougals. The defendants faced multiple charges of conspiracy and fraud in what prosecutors said was an elaborate $3 million scheme to defraud two financial institutions and win federally backed loans via fraudulent appraisals to finance their varied real estate and business projects in the mid-1980s.

We got back into paddling after a ten-year hiatus during which our Mom's Hollowform moldered in the garage. Last summer we strapped it to the top of my brother's jeep (it overhung each end by about two feet) and went to the lake for roll practice. Rolling a Hollowform is akin to rolling a twelve-foot can of Red, White, and Blue Beer...which is to say dern near impossible. After much frustration and little success, we both bought real boats: a Crossfire and then an Acrobat 270 for me, and a Corsica for him.

Early Saturday morning, we met at Class VI Whitewater to sign the necessary paperwork, have some coffee and muffins, and meet the other people we would raft downriver with. Jarhead, our bus driver, drove the modified International bus carrying our rafts and supplies slowly down some narrow, winding roads leading us to the put-in. It was chilly, ~50 degrees, but getting warmer quickly. Aletha , our fearless leader gathered us together to give us a safety talk. Soon, we found ourselves breaking up into groups of six. We figured out early that it would be more fun if we wound up on the more fun raft, and it wasn't long before Johnny, from Tallahassee, Florida, recruited us to join his raft. What a team we turned out to be! We set the pace. We laughed
