Roger was fully involved with the BC Randonneurs Roger passed away of a heart attack while doing that which he loved most - cycling. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends and the cycling community at large. Our Love and Condolences go to his wife Sharon and to his children. Updated: 3/3/03 - RAMROD is full. There is a waiting list set up at Active.Com for those trying to get into the ride still. Thank you for your patience through all this. I know it has been frustrating! Our race is a 40 mile (more than half as far again) ultramarathon held on the running track at the Jenner Park Stadium, Barry (home of Barry Town FC). It will next be run on Sunday March 2 2003 closed Final 2003 entry list (revised 12 February, 2003). Mick McGeoch has written (121kB Word format). These will also be in the race programme, which is available free on the day. Ever heard the phrase No guts, no glory ? Well, there's no glory, in the form of public men or cheering crowds, here. And you have to bring your own guts. On the other hand, hills are definitely out. Like London, however, this race is always oversubscribed, and the same people keep coming back. However, as the event runs to just shy of 161 laps, it demands that the number of marshals, in the form of lap counters, equal, or nearly equal, the number of runners. We would therefore be grateful if each entrant could bring a friend to perform this function. There is a time limit of 6 hours, which equates to nine-minute miling, or slightly better than 4 hour marathon pace. By the early afternoon, the sun has sunk behind the stadium stand, and the marshals all huddle like penguins in the middle of the pitch. So, however inclusive we'd like to be, come 4 o'clock, everyone wants to be somewhere warmer.

As the year comes to an end, it's time to start working on your New Year's resolution. You're going to run an ultramarathon. Most importantly, you're going to run the prestigious Comrades Marathon in South Africa on Wednesday, June 16. This allows you a little less than six months to get ready. The 24-week ultramarathon training schedule follows. Here is what you need to know to follow this ultramarathon training program. Mileage: The schedules include the number of miles to run each day. Unless otherwise noted, run these miles comfortably enough to insure you finish at approximately the same pace you started. The important thing is to cover the miles (particularly the weekend long miles), not run them fast. Pace: Where the term "pace" is used, it refers to the pace you plan to run the Comrades Marathon. Extractions: By: David Blaikie Located on his web site Ultra Marathon World An ultramarathon is any organized footrace extending beyond the standard marathon running distance of 42 kilometers, 195 meters (26 miles, 385 yards). Ultra races typically begin at 50 kilometers and can extend to enormous distances. There is no limit. The longest certified ultramarathon in the world is The Ultimate Ultra, the annual Sri Chinmoy 1300-Miler (2092 kilometers) which is held each fall in New York. There is also the annual Trans America Footrace, which is run in 64 consecutive daily stages from Los Angeles to New York. Runners cover almost 3,000 miles (more than 4800 kilometers) at a rate of about 45 miles (72 kilometers) a day. Ultramarathons are run on roads, trails and tracks. They can be point-to-point, like the Comrades Marathon in South Africa; out and back, like the Niagara 100K in Canada; or held on loop courses, like the famous one-mile loop that Sri Chinmoy runners circle 1300 times in New York. Rules allow runners to "go as you please." This means they may take walking breaks, pause to drink or eat and even sleep if the events are especially long, such as multi-day races. No penalty results from any such interruption, except for the time or distance a runner loses from his or her performance.
