Voor ieder van deze drie wapens wordt de beoefenaar een vorm, Hyung (kata) geleerd. Deze vormen concentreren zich op de technieken en zijn vanzelfsprekend ook heel goed te gebruiken bij zelfverdediging en wedstrijden. Zoals bij een traditionele vechtkunst worden de Tae Soo Do beoefenaars onderricht in ademhaling en meditatieoefeningen. Tae Soo Do helpt ieder individu met het opbouwen van een zeker zelfvertrouwen als ook het fysieke en mentale welzijn. Net zoals bij Hwa Rang Do® ligt de nadruk op de juiste ethische normen, discipline en respect.

Things are going well but we hope to get some more students. We did have a couple of new students join for the spring. We are again located in the Armory gymnasium. All of the University ROTC and military programs are located in the Armory building. This is a difficult issue for me because I have many misgivings about the U.S. military, its budget, and its role in foreign policy. However, it is a large, nice space and clearly the best we had available. Info on Tae Soo Do and Hwa Rang Do The art we are studying is called Hwa Rang Do. Hwa Rang Do is a 1,800 year old Korean art. We first learned of this art through an article in the Korean Quarterly. We were attracted to Hwa Rang Do because it features not only kicking/punching offensive techniques, but also healing techniques like acupressure and acupuncture. Hwa Rang Do has a philosophy that the ability to hurt should be taught alongside the ability to heal. I think that is cool. Tae Soo Do is the 'undergraduate' program of Hwa Rang Do. Hwa Rang Do is an extensive art (in fact it claims to be the world's most comprehensive). To keep beginners from being overwhelmed, an introductory art, which is a subset of Hwa Rang Do, called Tae Soo Do was developed. People with previous experiences in a martial art can start right away in Hwa Rang Do. People like Ted and Christy, with no or little previous martial art experience, are encouraged to start with Tae Soo Do. When a person reaches a black belt in Tae Soo Do, they can start the Hwa Rang Do program as a yellow sash.

Extractions: ABOUT HWARANG-DO One of the oldest Korean arts of combat. Hwarangdo means "the way of the flower of manhood," since it was originally taught in a youth organization. Originating almost 2,000 years ago, it is the Korean martial art from which many others stem. It was founded by a Buddhist monk, Bopsa Won Kwang, to educate aristocratic youths in martial arts and philosophy. These young adults were called "Hwarang" and in the Silla Dynasty they developed a reputation as the most feared warriors. Practitioners of Hwarang-do were expected to develop several principle qualities common to all martial artists: loyalty, courage and fairness. Like most "do" arts, Hwarang-do relies on the concept of yin-yang, or umyang as it is called in Korea, for it focuses on the spiritual and personal growth of the individual, balanced by development of the mind and body. Eventually the power of the Hwarang dissipated. The art was driven underground during the Yi Dynasty, where it remained for many years. In 1960, two brothers who had been students of Hwarang-do for many years opened the first modern public school. The art has spread to other countries, where it is often taught in combination with Tae Kwon Do. Die Fußtritttechniken, für die Tang Soo Do unübertroffen ist, stammen hauptsächlich aus dem koreanischen Tae Kyun. Soo Bahk Do wurde in der Silla Dynastie (668-935 A.D.) entwickelt und erlebte seine Blüte während der Koryo Dynastie (935-1392 A.D.). Tae Kyun Tang Soo Do ist sowohl ein harter als auch ein weicher Stil. Seine Härte stammt zum Teil vom Soo Bahk und seine weichen fließenden Bewegungen stammen von den nord-chinesischen Systemen. Großmeister Hwang Kee, der Tang Soo Do entwickelte, ist ein ungewöhnlicher Kampfkunstexperte. Bereits im Alter von 22 Jahren erreichte er schon die Meisterschaft in Soo Bahk Do sowie auch in Tae Kyun. In diesem Alter reiste er 1936 von Korea ins nördliche China und traf dort auf eine chinesische Kampfartistik, genannt die 'Tang Methode' und entwickelte das heute bekannte Tang Soo Do. GM Hwang Kee Nach seiner Rückkehr gründete er 1945 in Seoul/Korea die Schule des Moo Duk Kwan, in der er die von ihm entwickelte Kampfkunst des Tang Soo Do unterrichtete. Es ist eine Schule der Brüderlichkeit und eine Schule zur Vermeidung von inneren und äußeren Konflikten. Sie dient zur Entwicklung von Tugenden entsprechend einer 'ehrenwerten Hand'. Sie ist keine Sportart. Obgleich sie grundsätzlich nicht Wettkampf orientiert ist, hat sie viele Anwendungen für den Zweikampf. Sie ist eine klassische Kampfkunst und ihr Zweck ist es, jeden Aspekt seines Selbst entsprechend zu entwickeln, um eine reife Persönlichkeit zu schaffen, die in sich Intellekt, Körper, Emotionen und Geist vereint. Diese totale Integration hilft eine Persönlichkeit zu schaffen, die frei von inneren Konflikten ist und die nach außen hin in reifer, intelligenter, ehrlicher und tugendhafter Weise handelt.
