Welcome to our website The North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby is open to youths between the ages of 9-17 (depending on division) who live in the following Ohio counties: Richland, Ashland, Crawford, Huron, Knox, Marion and Morrow. The annual gravity race takes place during June on North Main Street in downtown Mansfield. In addition to competing in the race, each participant will receive an official race t-shirt, helmet, trophy and prize. The champion of each division will represent the North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby at the world championship All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. The champ will spend a fun week with other champions from around the country and world, and participate in many pre-race activities prior to the official race. This is a fun-filled week for champions and their families. The goals of the soap box box derby program are to promote families working together, to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship along with the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project to completion.

You may have noticed that the current (1990) soap box derby rule book contains a series of complex rules. Have you said to yourself, "Where do I begin in designing my car?" This article will attempt to show you how to design a state-of-the-art "lay-back" styled soap box derby racer. I will show an example step-by-step how to design a car as well as include other hints and clues about soap box design. All three divisions had new records set and dramatic outcomes. It all started with Brian Butler of Wooddale, IL. The derby world looked to Brian Butler to come blazing out of the ramp after been edged out for the Master's top spot in the closest finish in WDC history. However, by mid-season the only name to sit atop the thrown was Joe Tomasello. Brian had not even cracked the top 15 and questions mounted; did last year's defeat injure Brian? Was his derby career over? The derby world did not know what happened to the boy from Wooddale, IL. By March, a new name did appear in first, edging out Joe by a mere 20 points; but it was not Brian that climbed from fourth to first gaining 547 points in just 6 races. It was Dolline Vance. Brian had yet not been heard from and the derby world assumed Brian had retired after being edged from first last year.

World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The first All-American race was held in Dayton in 1934. Soap box derby competitions take place in various cities throughout the country, World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The Ashland Fire Department will host an official sign-up day for Soap Box Derby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Central Fire Station, 1021 Carter Ave., Ashland. Several cars from last year's race will be on display, along with race officials, to answer questions and accept registrations for the derby. There is no obligation and appointments are not necessary. Origins Soap Box Derby began over 50 years ago when a newspaper reporter from Dayton, Ohio wrote a story about some kids racing down a hill in carts made from soap boxes and crates. The Super Stock division gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All-American. These entry levels of racing are popular in race communities across the country, as youngsters are exposed to the Derby program for the first time.
