The outrigger canoe has been the principle mode of transport in Oceania for thousands of years and whilst its direct role in everyday life throughout the Pacific region has diminished giving way to the outboard motor and boats of contemporary design, outrigger canoe racing now provides a fuel for renewed passion and an assurance that the legend of the outrigger canoe lives forever. Canoe racing evolved as a natural extension of the ancient Hawaiians everyday relationship with the single-outrigger canoe utilised primarily for coastal fishing. Whilst the ocean provided many of their food needs so it also provided their sport and recreation. Outrigger canoe racing is intrinsically linked to this past and the cultures from which it manifested, and as it grows in popularity throughout the Pacific region there will be inevitably an ever increasing cross-over between cultures, between those European in origin and those who are indigenous to Oceania. This is brought about by travel to contests within the Pacific region and by the diversity of members of outrigger canoe clubs which is surely one of the great attractions of the sport. At a time in humankinds history, surrounded by hype and technology, its good to be a part of something that has a greater purpose, more than just another sport.
