With its high-end graphics, strong focus on realistic simulation, and detailed adherence to the official rules, "NASCAR 2003" quickly laps the competition. A word of caution is in order, though. Like its real-life counterpart, mastery of this often brutally unforgiving simulator will require many hours on the track. Not your dad's Taurus A lot has changed since the late '40s when Bill France Sr. spearheaded the creation of a racing circuit that used cars people actually drove on the street. Today's "stock" cars have all of the advantages of modern science and technology and bear little resemblance to their street-legal counterparts. Experienced developer Papyrus has worked closely with some of the big names in the automotive racing world to put that same technology to work on your PC. The result is an incredibly realistic and detailed racing simulation.

The game features such NASCAR sim firsts as the ability to lock individual wheels under braking, spin out with too quick of a steering correction, and even roll-over damage modeling. While the game caters to the utmost in realism for the hardcore sim fanatic there are plenty of driver aids to help "rookie" drivers, including an arcade mode. Features such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, auto-shifting (auto trans), and more help the new racers make their way around the tracks.
