Some are sprawling, Olympic-sized training centers for hundreds of birds. "I mix 10, 11 different kinds of grains," said cockfighter Ken Critchelow. "I worm and de-lice these chickens once a month, just as regular as you make house payments." Some are mowed and manicured better than many golf courses. It's not illegal in Kentucky to raise fighting cocks, but it's against the law in the Bluegrass to fight them.

According to Target 32 reporter John Boel, illegal cockfights were once a closely guarded secret in Kentucky, but now they're advertised, publicized, and undisguised. Boel's investigation found huge arenas, specially made for cockfighting where hundreds of people came to Kentucky from as close as Tennessee and as far away as Michigan. According to Boel, they're betting and cheering for fighting cocks to slash each other to death with long sharpened metal gaffes or knives attached to their ankles. "Basically these animals are slowly hacking each other to death, and people are encouraging, witnessing this carnage," Parcelle said.

Bill Graves plans to sign the bill into law, according to Kristin Heuertz, his deputy communications director. Rep. Peggy Long, R-Madison, author of the bill, said she was pleased by the vote count, 112-10 in the House and 36-4 in the Senate. Both of the votes occurred Saturday. "This is something that does affect the whole state of Kansas. I'm just relieved a majority of people think it's time to put an end to it," Long said. She had pushed the legislation the past two sessions after learning that not only were gamecocks killed in the process of fighting but many were drugged with amphetamines to make them continue to fight even after being badly wounded by razor blades, box cutters or other sharp metal devices attached to the birds' natural spurs by their handlers. Kansas was one of only six states in the nation without a specific criminal law banning cockfighting, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Wayne Pacelle, the society's senior vice president, described the Legislature's vote as "a major step forward in combating the cruel and barbaric practice of cockfighting in Kansas."
