By Mary Bellis Konrad Zuse (1910-1995) was a construction engineer for the Henschel Aircraft Company in Berlin, Germany at the beginning of WWII. Konrad Zuse earned the semiofficial title of "inventor of the modern computer" for his series of automatic calculators, which he invented to help him with his lengthy engineering calculations. Zuse has modestly dismissed the title while praising many of the inventions of his contemporaries and successors as being equally if not more important than his own. One of the most difficult aspects of doing a large calculation with either a slide rule or a mechanical adding machine is keeping track of all intermediate results and using them, in their proper place, in later steps of the calculation. Konrad Zuse wanted to overcome that difficulty. He realized that an automatic-calculator device would require three basic elements: a control, a memory, and a calculator for the arithmetic.

As early as he had began to develop a machine that could ease the painstaking effort of calculating. Not knowing the earlier work of Babbage, Zuse started with a fresh look. construction of the Z1 (around 1936) Instead of a numerical approach, he began with the digital concept of yes/no positioning. The machine he created, the Z1 (sometimes referred to as the Versuch) 1) was ready in . In 1936 Zuse made a patent application on some of its parts, which proves that he had developed various major concepts of the digital computer long before men like Von Neumann or Burks presented their ideas.

He built a mechanical device, which he called "Z1", in the living room of his parents' apartment in Berlin. The construction of the Z1, the first programmable binary computing machine in the world, began in 1936 and finished in 1938. As part of his civil-engineering studies at the Technical University Berlin-Charlottenburg, Zuse learned to perform repetitive static calculations-for example, those needed to determine the stress on materials of structures such as bridges. Static calculations were performed by filling out forms on which all necessary formulas had been pre-printed. Zuse started considering the possibility of automating this task. The engineer had to fill in the data and follow the prescribed computational path - surely a machine could do this work. With his parents' financial help, he began to build the automaton which until that point had only existed in his imagination. Some friends assisted by working for him; others gave him small amounts of money so that he could finish what would become the Z1. This might be the most important difference between Zuse and other computer inventors working at the time: while in the United States scientists such as John Atanasoff and Howard Aiken had the resources of universities or companies at their disposal, Zuse was working alone. The entire design of the Z1 was his own work.
