   Edmund Taylor Whittaker. Edmund Whittaker was educated at Manchester GrammarSchool and from there he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1892.

   Extractions: Edmund Whittaker was educated at Manchester Grammar School and from there he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1892. At Cambridge he was a pupil of G H Darwin and A R Forsyth . His interests at this time were on the applied side of mathematics which is certainly illustrated by the fact that, in 1894, he was awarded the Sheepshanks Exhibition in Astronomy. Whittaker graduated as Second Wrangler in the examination of 1895. He was beaten into second place by Bromwich . He became first Smith's prizeman in 1896 for a work on pure mathematics, namely on uniform functions. In 1896 Whittaker became a Fellow of Trinity College and began to lecture in Cambridge. His first pupils at Cambridge included G H Hardy and J H Jeans . Whittaker made revolutionary changes to the topics taught at Cambridge. He taught a course based on his famous book A Course of Modern Analysis (1902). This work is important in the study of functions of a complex variable. It also studies
