Proto u zkouek neuspìl. Kdy se mu nepodaøilo sloit zkouky ani v roce 1875, ani v roce 1876, zasáhl jeho otec a pøimluvil se u øeditele Leidenské hvìzdárny, který byl jeho pøítelem. Díky tomu se Thomas stal v roce 1877 asistentem Leidenské observatoøe a zaèal si v roce 1882 dopisovat s Hermitem. Celý svùj ivot Stieltjes vìnoval matematice. V roce 1883, nìkolik mìsícù poté, co se oenil, odeel z místa v observatoøi a zaèal se vìnovat matematickému výzkumu. V lednu 1884 Stieltjes dostal nabídku na místo profesora matematické analýzy na Univerzitì v Groningenu, kterou pøijal. Bohuel, nakonec vak jmenován nebyl, protoe nemìl dostateènou kvalifikaci. Díky Hermiteovì pomoci ale Univerzita v Leidenu v èervnu 1884 nabídla Stieltjesovi èestný diplom z matematiky a astronomie. V roce 1885 Stieltjes odeel se svojí rodinou do Paøíe a v roce 1889 byl jmenován na místo profesora diferenciálního a integrálního poètu na Univerzitì v Toulouse.

Extractions: The models we have discussed so far (Malthus and Logistic) are single species models. Many of the most interesting dynamics in the biological world have to do with interactions between species. Mathematical models which incorporate these interactions are required if we hope to simulate these dynamics. One of the first models to incorporate interactions between predators and prey was proposed in 1925 by the American biophysicist Alfred Lotka and the Italian mathematician Vito Volterra. The Lotka-Volterra model describes interactions between two species in an ecosystem, a predator and a prey. This represents our first multi-species model. Since we are considering two species, the model will involve two equations, one which describes how the prey population changes and the second which describes how the predator population changes. For concreteness let us assume that the prey in our model are rabbits, and that the predators are foxes. Nel 1893 venne chiamato a insegnare a Torino enel 1900 a Roma, dove insegnò fisica matematica per 31 anni. Nel 1905 venne nominato senatore del regno. Fu interventista e partì volontario per la prima guerra mondiale. Non manifestò mai simpatia per il fascismo e nel 1924 firmò il manifesto delle forze liberali e democratiche redatto da Giovanni Amendola, mentre nel 1925 aderì alla protesta di Croce contro il manifesto degli intellettuali fascisti. E votò contro la legge che vietava ogni associazione segreta (in particolare la Massoneria, invisa al fascismo) e contro un ordine del giorno con cui si approvavano i criteri pr una riforma elettorale che avrebbe favorito i fascisti. Nel 1930 gli si impedì di espatriare. Nel 1931 si rifiutò naturalmente di giurare ma anni dopo venne nominato accademico pontificio e mantenne il suo seggio al Senato in quanto il re, quando entrarono in vigore le leggi razziali, si rifiutò di far decadere i senatori da lui nominati. Morì l11 ottobre 1940.

Extractions: Mathematician and physicist; bibliophile, statesman, and man of conscience, Vito Volterra was among the leading figures in Italian science and politics of the first half of this century. A mathematical prodigy, Volterra graduated from the University of Pisa in 1882. Rising rapidly in the academic world, he was appointed to the chair of mathematical physics at the University of Rome in 1900. Volterra's mathematical skills were the connecting thread in a diverse range of interests as he undertook close mathematical study of phenomena in fields as diverse as optics, celestial mechanics, and biology. The results were major advances in the calculus, especially in the methods for the solving and understanding of integral equations with variable limits. Always active as a scientist, after entering the Italian Senate in 1905, Volterra also became increasingly dedicated to the cause of democracy. During the first World War, he was a strong proponent of Italy's involvement on the side of the Allies and in 1917 founded the Italian Office of War Inventions. Later as president of the Accademia dei Lincei, a post once held by Galileo, Volterra was one of the principal signatories of the Intellectuals' Declaration against Fascism. In the end, his bold and unswerving opposition to Fascism cost Volterra his professorship, his membership in learned societies, and, ultimately, his seat in the Senate. Always, however, he remained among the most respected men in Italy and throughout the world.

Studiò a Firenze e alla Scuola Normale di Pisa con il matematico Ulisse Dini. Divenuto professore a soli 23 anni, insegnò meccanica razionale e fisica matematica. Nel 1905 fu nominato Senatore del regno. Fondatore della Società fisica italiana e del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (CNR), del quale fu presidente dal 1923 al 1926, nel 1931 fu allontanato dall'insegnamento e successivamente estromesso da tutti gli istituti culturali italiani per non aver prestato giuramento di fedeltà al regime fascista. Vittima della persecuzione antisemita, si trasferì a Parigi, per poi tornare in Italia nel 1939. Si occupò di numerosi problemi di analisi e fisica matematica; diede importanti contributi alla teoria delle equazioni integrali e fu uno dei fondatori del calcolo funzionale.
