Iniziati gli studi universitari alla facoltà di Scienze fisiche matematiche e naturali dell'Università di Firenze, Volterra si trasferì nel 1878 all'Università di Pisa, dove si laureò in Fisica nel 1882 e nel 1883 divenne professore di Meccanica Razionale. Nel 1892 Volterra passò all'Università di Torino e nel 1900 fu chiamato all'Università di Roma per insegnare Fisica matematica, fino al 1931. Fu senatore del Regno dal 1905, Regio Commissario del Politecnico nel 1906, e fondò la Società fisica italiana e quello che attualmente è il Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. Dal 1921 fino alla morte fu presidente del Bureau International des Poids et Mesures. All'avvento del fascismo assunse, fin dall'inizio, un atteggiamento di decisa opposizione. Per essersi rifiutato di prestare il giuramento di fedeltà allo stato fascista, nel 1931 venne privato della cattedra e nel 1935 estromesso da tutti gli istituti culturali italiani. Le leggi razziali lo costrinsero ad espatriare; visse a lungo in Francia e tornò in Italia nel 1939.

    Extractions: Dibner/Burndy Head of Publications On November 17, the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology celebrated the single most important addition to the Burndy Library since it arrived at MIT in 1992. Dignitaries, including President Charles Vest and Francesco Sicilia, director general for library assets and cultural institutions for the Republic of Italy, gathered to mark the arrival at Burndy of the extraordinary book collection of the Italian mathematician and physicist Vito Volterra (1860-1940). The culmination of a multiyear collaboration between the Dibner Fund (supporter of the Dibner Institute/Burndy Library), Brandeis University and the Republic of Italy, the arrival of the Volterra Collection is a major milestone in both the development of Burndy Library, which specializes in the history of science, and the longstanding relationship between the history of science communities in the United States and Italy. The size of the Volterra Collection alone is impressive: nearly 7,000 volumes, dozens of journals, and 17,000 pamphlets and reprints. In pure numbers, the Volterra Collection increases the Burndy Library's holdings by nearly one-third.

Divenuto professore a soli 23 anni, insegnò meccanica razionale e fisica matematica. Nel 1905 fu nominato Senatore del regno. Fondatore della Società fisica italiana e del Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (CNR), del quale fu presidente dal 1923 al 1926, nel 1931 fu allontanato dall'insegnamento e successivamente estromesso da tutti gli istituti culturali italiani per non aver prestato giuramento di fedeltà al regime fascista. Vittima della persecuzione antisemita, si trasferì a Parigi, per poi tornare in Italia nel 1939. Si occupò di numerosi problemi di analisi e fisica matematica; diede importanti contributi alla teoria delle equazioni integrali e fu uno dei fondatori del calcolo funzionale.
