Extractions: (Fontenay-le-Comte, 1540 - Paris, 1603) De son vivant, Viète fut avant tout connu comme maître des requêtes et conseiller d' Henri IV ; les mathématiques étant plutôt son principal passe-temps. En mathématique, son oeuvre porta sur la trigonométrie (il publia des tables en 1579) et surtout sur la résolution algébrique des équations (il utilisa des lettres à la place des chiffres pour exprimer d'une façon générale les solutions des équations du second degré : les majuscules désignaient les quantités connues et les minuscules les inconnues). En outre, il établit des algorithmes permettant de résoudre les équations de façon approchée et le calcul des dix premières décimales de pi. Il sut aussi appliquer l'algèbre numérique à la géométrie (bien avant Descartes). Il participa aussi à plusieurs débats polémiques. Il s'opposa vivement aux thèses d'un dénomé Scaliger qui prétendit avoir résolu la quadrature du cercle, et dénonça quelques erreurs dans le nouveau calendrier grégorien (en partie à tord). Il préféra ne pas utiliser les nombres négatifs dont l'usage se répendait pourtant parmi ses contemporains. Proche du roi, il se vit confier plusieurs missions secrètes et son succès le plus grand fut sans doute le décryptage de messages chiffrés utilisés par les Espagnols dans leurs correspondances.

Extractions: Rare Book Room Exhibit VIETE, FRANCOIS (1540 - 1603). Opera Mathematica Viete studied law like his father but worked in the legal profession for only four years. While in the service of Henry of Navarre (later Henry IV) he broke a code used by King Phillip II of Spain. Besides his innovations in algebra and trigonometry he authored several (unpublished) manuscripts on the question of the mathematical consistency of the planetary theories of Ptolemy and Copernicus. Extractions: This entry contributed by Margherita Barile A non-professional French mathematician, also known under the latinized name of Vieta, who disclosed the way to modern symbolic algebra. He had a very brilliant legal career starting in his hometown Fontenay-le-Comte as the private lawyer of a noble family, and ended up as a personal counselor of King Henri III. His first mathematical works were two books of trigonometric tables ( Canon Mathematicus , and Universalium Inspectionum Liber Singularis , 1579) where the values of sines were computed with a (startling) accuracy of 10 Viète's major contribution is his innovative treatment of algebraic equations. He initiated the systematical use of letters to denote both the coefficients and the unknowns: this was the beginning of a new type of algebra, expressed in terms of abstract formulas and general rules, instead of the geometric visualizations, the text problems and the numerical examples used by his predecessors back since antiquity. He, however, payed some sort of tribute to the ancient tradition by refusing negative solutions, by sticking to the use of words to denote powers (the exponents would be introduced by Descartes one generation later), and by keeping a terminology inspired by areas and volumes ("plane" and "solid" for the product of two or three numbers respectively). His treatise Isagoge in Artem Analyticem (1591) is a presentation of his mathematical project. There he introduces the basic notation and gives the rules for the product of powers and the equivalent transformation of equations in a way that calls to mind the first pages of Diophantus'
