Extractions: Stan Ulam solved the problem of how to initiate fusion in the hydrogen bomb. He also devised the 'Monte-Carlo method' widely used in solving mathematical problems using statistical sampling. At the age of ten, Ulam entered the gymnasium in Lvov and, about this time, he became interested first in astronomy and then in physics. An uncle gave Ulam a telescope when he was about 12 years old and later Ulam tried to understand Einstein 's special theory of relativity. However this required an understanding of mathematics and so, at age 14, he began to study mathematics from books, going well beyond the school level mathematics he was learning. Ulam said ([9] or [10]):- ... I was sixteen when I really learned calculus all by myself from a book by Kowalevski, a German not to be confused with Sonia Kovalevskaya Then I read also about set theory in a book by Sierpinski , and I think I understood that. We had a good professor in high school, Zawirski, who was a lecturer in logic at the university. I talked to him about it then and when I entered the Polytechnic Institute.

He received his M.A. and D.Sc. in 1933 from Polytechnic Institute, Lwow; post- doctoral studies in Vienna, Zurich and Cambridge University, England, 1934. Ulam came to the U.S. on an invitation to the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton in 1935. From 1936 to 1940 he was a lecturer in mathematics and a Member of Harvard Society of Fellows. Ulam then went to the University of Wisconsin where he was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics from 1941-1943. From 1943-1967, he was a staff member, group leader, and research advisor for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. From 1965-1975 he was a Professor and Chairman of the Mathematics Department at the University of Colorado. In 1973, he was appointed as a Graduate Research Professor at the University of Florida. In 1979, he was appointed Professor of Biomathematics at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver. Since 1967 he has served as a consultant to the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Over his career Professor Ulam has published over 150 papers, reports, and reviews in professional journals in Set Theory, Foundations of Mathematics, Topology, Functional Analysis, Group Theory, Probability Theory, The Monte Carlo Theory, mathematical physics, Statistical Mechanics, thermonuclear reactions, and applications of electronic computers to mathematics and mathematical physics. He has published three books on mathematics and his autobiography Adventures of a Mathematician.

Extractions: One night in 1946, Stanislaw Ulam, a young mathematics professor was overwhelmed by a violent headache. When he tried to talk he found he could produce nothing but a meaningless mumble. He was rushed to a hospital where the surgeon drilled a hole in his skull and found his brain in an acute state of inflammation. The doctors applied penicillin liberally and Ulam lapsed into a coma. The diagnosis was encephalitis. And Ulam's wife and friends worried that he would suffer permanent brain damage. But that was far from the case. The mathematician went on to produce some of his best work after his recovery. And, in fact, it was playing solitaire while convalescing, that Ulam first thought up the "Monte Carlo" method. Together with an old friend, mathematician John von Neumann, Ulam developed the procedure into an extremely useful calculating tool that enabled mathematicians to solve complicated problems by making approximations. It was put to almost immediate use by scientists working on nuclear weapons. Ulam had first come to the United States from Poland for a few months in 1935 at von Neumann's invitation to work at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton. He left his homeland for good in 1939 with his 16-year-old brother Adam. His father and uncle saw them off. It was the last time the brothers ever saw either men. Along with the rest of the Ulam family, they became victims of Hitler's holocaust.

He received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1933 at the Lvov Polytechnic Institute. He, along with his younger brother fled Poland in 1939. His friend, John von Neumann had secured a position at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton. The rest of Ulam's family was killed in the Holocaust. In 1943, Ulam was invited to join the Manhattan Project by Hans Bethe When President Truman announced that the United States was to develop a hydrogen bomb, Ulam began calculating whether Edward Teller's design would work. Ultimately, Ulam and a fellow mathematician Cornelius Everett concluded that Teller's model would never work. The results caused tensions between Ulam and Teller. A year later he accidentally came up with a new scheme that would prove to be a breakthrough. He remained at Los Alamos until 1965 when he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Colorado. He died in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on May 13, 1984.
