He worked for the League of Nations from 1936 to 1939 and was director of the Central Planning Bureau from 1945 to 1955. Tinbergen was known throughout the world as an econometrist and mathematical economist. He was one of the first to set up a broad model of a national economy and test it quantitatively in practice. In 1969, Tinbergen, with Ragnar Frisch, received the first Nobel Prize for Economics. He was an professor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam until 1973 and was professor of economics at the University of Leiden from 1974 until his retirement in 1975. Aunque licenciado en ciencias físicas, pronto desvió su atención hacia la economía y se convirtió en uno de los fundadores de la econometría (y la revista Econometrica ) en los años treinta. Het Econometrisch Instituut van de Groningse universiteit vierde een lustrum, en in de lustrumcommissie stelde Theo Junius voor Tinbergen uit te nodigen. We vroegen ons met zorg af of we Tinbergen met zijn hoge leeftijd die lange treinreis wel konden aandoen, maar Theo overreedde ons, scheen de situatie te kennen - en natuurlijk maakten we het lustrum graag tot een succes. Het blanco laat zich toch wel begrijpen. Op jongere leeftijd ga je denkelijk wat meer af op labels. De klinkende naam voor de ontwikkelingssamenwerking was "Pronk". "Tinbergen" klonk saai, als "Pearson" - van die boekjes die bij De Slegte lagen. In de Groningse opleiding econometrie was de naam Tinbergen niet zo vaak voorgekomen. Er is geen "Theorema van Tinbergen" of een andere specifieke kapstok die houvast geeft. Het eerste model voor Nederland uit 1936 is natuurlijk niet zo interessant voor PvdA angehauchte studenten in de periode van het kabinet Den Uyl. Pas later merk je hoe Jans werk in alle niches van het vak is terug te vinden. Op het lustrum maakte Tinbergen geen sprankelende indruk. Oud, vriendelijk, helder, wel een verrassend fijn gevoel voor humor - maar ik weet niet meer wat hij gezegd heeft. Belangrijker was de conclusie van een andere spreker, wiens naam ik wel weer vergeten ben, dat econometristen teveel steunen op CBS statistieken en te weinig zelf materiaal verzamelen. Deze conclusie is nog steeds de moeite waard.

In het boek "Telgen van Tinbergen" p 128 erkent Rick van der Ploeg gelukkig dat er lichtjaren zitten tussen top en gewone economen. Journalisten doen er goed aan om dit als een feit te erkennen, en zich vervolgens duizendmaal te bezinnen voordat zij een oordeel over zon persoon en zijn werk uitspreken. Hij was de zoon van Dirk Cornelis Tinbergen, leraar Nederlands aan een gymnasium, en Jeannette van Eek, onderwijzeres. Op 19 juli 1929 trad hij in het huwelijk met Tine Johanna de Wit, juriste, met wie hij vier dochters kreeg. Pseudoniem: Jan Dirks. De psychologie van het socialisme (Amsterdam 1927) van Hendrik de Man. Tinbergen was al antimilitaristisch, maar zijn dienstweigering werd beïnvloed door die van de zoon van de bouwmeester H.P. Berlage, een wat oudere natuurkundestudent, die daarvoor nog in de gevangenis belandde. Tinbergen had al in 1921 in dienst moeten gaan maar kreeg vanwege zijn studie uitstel tot na zijn doctoraalexamen in juli 1925. Hij had het geluk dat in 1923 de Dienstweigeringswet werd aangenomen, die het mogelijk maakte om vervangende burgerdienst te doen. Omdat zijn burgerdienst pas in mei 1926 zou beginnen, gebruikte Tinbergen het tussenliggende jaar voor journalistiek werk. Voor Het Volk Minimumproblemen in de natuurkunde en de ekonomie Naarmate Tinbergens reputatie als wetenschapper groeide, nam ook zijn gezag binnen de SDAP toe. Tinbergen heeft een grote invloed uitgeoefend op de sociaal-democratische theorievorming. In haar artikel uit 1938 'Vijf en twintig jaar socialistische theorie' noemde H. Verwey-Jonker Tinbergen 'het meest uitgesproken type' van de derde generatie theoretici: 'De derde generatie oordeelt "voraussetzungslos" en ze heeft een honger naar feiten'. He received the award for his work in econometrics and economic measurement. Tinbergen, who earned a Ph.D. in physics, had become interested in economics while working on his dissertation. His 1929 dissertation was titled "Minimum Problems in Physics and Economics." He began to apply mathematical tools to economics, which, at the time, was relatively verbal and nonmathematical. In 1929 he joined a unit of the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics to do research on business cycles. He stayed there until 1945, with a leave of absence from 1936 to 1938 to work for the League of Nations in Geneva. Along with Frisch and others Tinbergen developed the field of econometrics, the use of statistical tools to test economic hypotheses. Tinbergen was one of the first economists to create multiequation models of economies. He produced a twenty-seven-equation econometric model of the Dutch economy. And in 1939 he published a book, Business Cycles in the United States, 1919-1932

Extractions: The International Statistical Institute (ISI) announces the Ninth Competition among young statisticians from developing countries who are invited to submit a paper on any topic within the broad field of statistics, for possible presentation at the 52 nd Session of the ISI to be held in Helsinki, Finland, in 1999. Participation in the competition is open to nationals of developing countries who are living in a developing country, who were born in 1967 or later. Previous winners of the award are prohibited to compete again. Papers submitted must be unpublished, original works, which may include material from participants' university theses. The papers submitted will be examined by an International Jury of distinguished statisticians who will select the three best papers presented in the competition. Their decision will be final. Each author of a winning paper will receive the Jan Tinbergen Award in the amount of 5,000 Dutch Guilders and will be invited to present their papers at the Helsinki Session of ISI, with all expenses paid (i.e. round trip airling ticket from his/her place of residence to Helsinki plus a lump sum to cover living expenses). Manuscripts for the Competition should be submitted in time to reach the ISI not later than January 1, 1999.

Extractions: Door deze methodiek was Tinbergen in staat dynamische ontwikkelingen te analyseren; hij deed dit voor vraag en aanbod van individuele producten of sectoren zoals aardappelmeel, scheepsbouw, investeringen in spoorwegmaterieel, maar ook bouwde hij in 1936 het eerste model van wiskundige vergelijkingen voor een economie als geheel: die van Nederland (Tinbergen, 1936) . Met de val van de Berlijnse Muur in 1989 is een einde gekomen aan het Sovjet systeem; de centrale planning in het Oostblok is ondeugdelijk gebleken. Maar dat betekent allerminst dat planning geen functie zou hebben. Multinationale ondernemingen verkennen hun toekomst middels planning en zelfs het wezen van elk bedrijf kan in termen van planning worden omschreven (Coase, 1937). Als door de werking van marktkrachten in de zeevisserij de visstand gevaarlijk terugloopt is planning door middel van het toekennen van visquota nodig om het tij te keren. Het stellen van eisen tot herplanting bij de invoer van tropisch hardhout in de EU is een ander voorbeeld. Naarmate de ontwikkeling van technologie meer ingrijpende gevolgen heeft zal planning aan terrein moeten winnen ten opzichte van marktwerking.
