I am looking to use and extend ideas obtained from the work of Aref Ottino Wiggins Cartwright etal ... MacKay etc. to new and novel, non Navier Stokes approaches to turbulence. These are then applied to the question of how patterns form (ie. patches) and material is transported in turbulent flows. We apply these ideas to the problem of pollution dynamics in the estuarine environment. I am currently in the 3rd year of my PhD and work with Andy Osbaldestin , department of Mathematical sciences, Ron Smith , professor of applied mathematics and Cecil Scott , department of Civil engineering.     Extractions: page 5 The Palace and Kings Old Building The palace was commissioned by King James V beginning around 1538 for his queen, Mary of Guise, but it may incorporate parts of an earlier building at basement level. It is a large quadrangular building around a central courtyard known as the Lion's Den. The statues which adorn the outer walls include depictions of King James V, St.Micheal, the devil, and several classical gods and goddesses. Men at arms line the parapet of the south face and many smaller pieces show pigs, dragons, elephants, and mythical beasts. The main entrance from the Inner Close was originally covered by a large porch but this re-built early in the 18 th century when the stairway to the governor's apartments on the upper floors was added. It opens into a gallery connecting the king's apartments with those of the queen and gives access to the Lion's Den, King James V is said to have kept a lion at Stirling. Queen's Bedroom Both lodgings consisted of a Guard Hall, a Presence Chamber, and a bedchamber with wall closets. The fireplaces are the only original features to survive. The rooms are currently under restoration, the Queen's Lodging as it was in the 1540s, and the King's according to an inventory taken in 1585.

    Extractions: Few of the major architects who rose to prominence after the war have matched Sir James Stirling's curiosity about history. At a time when designers were wedded to the notion that 20th-century architecture should reject the past, Stirling was happy to cherry-pick inspiration from multiple eras of design history. Such an interest not only influenced his buildings - most notably the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (completed in 1984) - it also stimulated his appetite for constantly expanding and renewing his intensely personal collection of furniture. Initially Stirling was most strongly attracted to the classic designs of the pre-war Modernists, but in the late 1960s he developed a deep love of early-19th-century neo-Classical designers, notably Thomas Hope and George Bullock. By the time Stirling died in 1992, he had formed an exceptional collection of their work.

    Extractions: In 1988, a new arts centre, based at Pier 8, was proposed to raise the curltural profile of the city and bring more businesses and tourism into the area. Salford City Council commissioned the internationally famous architects James Stirling and Michael Wilford www.michaelwilford.com to produce designs for the arts centre. Stirling died suddenly in 1992, and Michael Wilford was confirmed as architect. Lottery funding was secured, building began in April 1997, and was completed three years later. The total cost of the project, £106 million, includes The Lowry building, the large triangular Plaza, the terraced areas down to the canal and the Lifting Footbridge leading to Trafford Wharfside and the Imperial War Museum - North. Also included in The Lowry project is the Digital World Centre (DWC) - a high-tech business centre providing quality, serviced premises. It will be home to the Digital World Society (DWS), a new think tank that will generate innovative projects in digital technologies. It is due to open in Autumn 2003. The Outside The Lowry is triangular in shape, to fit with its site at the end of Pier 8. In area it is the size of 5 football pitches. The building stands on 803 concrete piles sunk down into the bedrock; it was made from 48,000 tons of concrete, 2,466 tons of steel and 5,263 sq metres of glass.

In James Stirling's time it had not a road, hardly a track; and as late as the end of last century, Pennant, traveling of course on horseback, had to take a guide part of the way from Leadhills to Douglas. But in this sort of St. Kilda, James Stirling passed the rest of his life. He had had an adventurous career. His greatest adventure hence forth was an occasional visit to the outer world. On one such visit to Edinburgh he writes a characteristic letter to his clerk at Leadhills. He bids to take some of the companies men to his house (the names by the way are mostly English), "and give them a bole of punch," he orders a provision of that most leprous distilment, shrub; and in a postscriptum he adds, "Be sure to have James Reid of the party; and if I hear that one of you goes home sober, I will seek another clerk when I come home." One pities James Reid and his mates, coerced into excess on shrub. James Stirling died in Edinburgh on 5th December, 1770, aged 78. His principal works was his "Methodus Differentialis Sive Tractatus de Summatione et Interpolatione Serierum Infinitarum," published in 1730, and translated into English by Francis Halliday in 1749. He also wrote numerous papers in the Transactions of the Philosophical Society and elsewhere. One of these, "Of a Machine to Blow Fire by the Fall of Water," written in 1745 when he had been ten years at Leadhills, was no doubt suggested by the water appliances there. There are at Garden numerous letters of his, his correspondence in Latin with the leading mathematicians of the day, and two holograph MS. volumes by him of a treatise on weights and measures, including an essay on the Pyramids which anticipates some modern disquisitions. Unfortunately of private letters of his there are very few, and of letters from Venice none.

His thesis was on the use of tools from nonlinear dynamics to understand the movement of pollution in chaotic and turbulent fluid flows. After having obtained his PhD he was a postdoc at CALTECH (California Institute of Technology, Department of Control and Dynamical Systems) working on chaos in fluids. Following this he was a postdoc at the Institute of Mathematical Modelling, Technical University of Denmark, working on chaos in non-linear optics. This was followed with a postdoc in the Department of Physics, University of Crete and the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, FORTH, where he worked on chaotic breathers in solid state physics. He then was a visiting professor in the Departament de Matemàtica Aplicada I, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, where he worked on non-linear dynamics in exercise physiology and biomechanics. Currently he is a visiting professor at the CRM, Centre de Recerca Matemàtica, where he continues his work on non-linear dynamics in exercise physiology and biomechanics. This research in exercise physiology is done in collaboration with Professor Bengt Saltin at the Center for Muscle Research, in Copenhagen and Maria Zakynthinaki in UPC, Barcelona. The aim of the research is to model the physiological responses to exercise, using tools from dynamical systems and apply the findings to training methodology and testing.

Its location rivals even Edinburgh Castle's for sheer magnificence as it sits on its high volcanic rock, visible for many miles in every direction. The Castle is in the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public all year round and seven days a week. The Grand Battery A site as important as the castle rock at Stirling, guarding as it does the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, would have been of strategic interest to anyone wanting to control central Scotland. There is, however, no actual evidence that the Romans or the Votadini, or the Picts who fought over this ground in the first millennium A.D. fortified the rock: it simply seems highly likely that they would have done. And it is sadly only an attractive theory that the legend of Camelot is based on a castle here during King Arthur's conquest of parts of Scotland in the 6th Century. During a long and bloody history Stirling Castle has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times. Three battles have been fought in its immediate vicinity, two of which were turning points in Scottish history: and a fourth equally important battle took place just a few miles to the north. A number of Scottish Kings and Queens have been baptised, or crowned, or died within or near Stirling Castle. And at least one King was murdered nearby: while another committed murder within its walls.
