This was made harder since his health was poor (a brother and sister had both died) and he was taken to Italy instead of completing his final year at Rugby. He undertook private reading while in Italy and was still able to win the scholarship. Smith became a fellow, then a tutor at Balliol. We focus here on cultural evolution, and present a multi-agent Iterated Learning Model of the emergence of compositionality, a fundamental structural property of language. Our key results is to show that the poverty of the stimulus available to language learners leads to a pressure for linguistic structure. When there is a bottleneck on cultural transmission, only a language which is generalisable from sparse input data is stable.     Extractions: Henry Louis Smith, 1859-1951 was born in Greensboro, NC, the oldest son of Rev. Jacob Henry. He attended Davidson College and was graduated in 1881. He then served as principle of the Selma Academy. He accepted a position on the faculty of Davidson College in 1886 and also began graduate work at the University of Virginia. Smith taught physics and astronomy and was superintendent of grounds and buildings from 1890 to 1900. While a professor, Smith performed the first X-ray experiment in the United States in 1896. Elected president of Davidson College in 1901, Smith tripled the enrollment, and enlarged the faculty, physical facilities and endowment. In 1912 he left Davidson to accept the presidency of Washington and Lee University. During his tenure as president, the student enrollment doubled and again he increased the size of the faculty and the university's endowment. During World War I his plan for a propaganda campaign using balloons was adopted and Woodrow Wilson later credited Smith with helping to shorten the war. In 1929, he retired and moved back to Greensboro where he remained active in civic and religious affairs until his death in 1951. SCOPE AND CONTENT:

Up until that time there was little to distinguish him from many other citizens of his time and locale. He had patented or purchased land in both Eastern Shore counties. He had paid for the transportation of many headrights for which he was granted the rights to many acres of land. He had acted as an appraiser for estate of a deceased neighbor. He was a juror when required. He owned two plantations. The main one was at "Oaken Hall" and he had another near Occahannock in the southern part of the Accomack County. No one knows what drove him to earn his reputation as being so mean but the evidence was there for any interested person to see. His servants and headrights bore the brunt of his fury. Nothing they did could satisfy him. He demanded more and more work with less and less food and clothing for them. The laws of those days required that the servants and headrights be treated with a certain amount of respect and kindness. They were servants and workers, not slaves, with a finite period of service pledged, This was called an indenture after which the servants were to be released with "corn and clothes" and were free to go their merry way. Upon completion of their period of servitude they could then do what their masters had done. If they had saved their money they could import headrights of their own and become landowners that way or they could become some type of tradesman. They were the masters of their own destiny. Some even signed up for additional periods provided their masters taught them a trade.

While interesting, Smith missed the point in focusing on the historical figure and not the reasons behind the various representations of Boone since John Filson's "autobiography" in 1784. This project will attempt to provide a cross-section of Boone portrayals, and attempt to place their points of view in historical context, based on the idea that a culture's myths and heroes explain who they are, and the true historical personages are less important than the image they become. He was married three times and was the father of nine children. The wives were sisters, Harriet, Elizabeth, and Sarah Gillett. Smith came to Texas in 1827 and settled in what is now Brazoria County. In addition to working his lands, he taught school for a while and later did some surveying. Almost from the day of his arrival in Texas he took an active part in public affairs. On occasion he moved beyond the sphere of politics, as in 1832 when he took part in the battle of Velasco qv and was severely wounded. There is evidence that at this early date he was thinking in terms of independence for Texas. In 1833 Smith was elected alcalde of the jurisdiction of Brazoria and a few months later was chosen a delegate to the Convention of 1833. qv In 1834 the governor of Coahuila and Texas qv appointed Smith political chief of the newly established department of the Brazos. His appointment to this position indicates that the Mexican officials considered him an outstanding citizen. As the country moved toward revolution, Smith became one of the leaders of the independence party. In the summer of 1835 he was chosen to serve on the Columbia committee of safety and correspondence and later in the same year was elected one of the delegates from his district to the Consultation. qv Smith urged an immediate declaration of independence and was keenly disappointed when that body decided instead to pledge its support to the Mexican federal Constitution of 1824.

Of the old school of the - New England Theology,” Smith was one of the foremost leaders of the new school Presbyterians. His theology is most strikingly contained in the Andover address, “Relations of Faith and Philosophy,” which was delivered before the Porter Rhetorical Society ~n. 1849. He always made it clear that the ideal philosophy was Christocentric: he said that Reformed theology must “ ‘Christologize ‘ predestination and decrees, regeneration and sanctification, the doctrine of the Church, and the whole of the Eschatology.” His son HENRY GOODWIN SMITH (b. 1860) was pastor of the Freehold (New Jersey) Presbyterian Church, in 1886—1896, and from 1897 to 1903 was professor of systematic theology in Lane Theological Seminary. From notes of his lectures, William S. Karr prepared two volumes of Dr Smith’s theological writings, Introduction to Christian Theology (1883) and System of Christian Theology (1884). Dr Smith contributed articles on Calvin, Kant, Pantheism, Miracles, Reformed Churches, Schelling and Hegel to the American C’yclopaedia, and contributed to McClintock and Strong’s Cyclopaedia; and was editor of the American Theological Review (1859 sqq.), both in its original form and after it became the American Presbyterian and Theological Review and, later, the Presbyterian Quarterly and Princeton Remmew.
