Hans största matematiska bedrift var distributionsteorin där han förklarade Diracs deltapuls matematiskt. Han fick 1950 års Fields medalj oberoende av Atle Selberg. Laurent Moïse Schwarz föddes år 1915 i Paris som son till en känd kirurg. Han hade två yngre bröder, Bertrand och Daniel, som var två respektive fyra år yngre. Hans barndomsnäste var gården Autouillet som föräldrarna köpte när han var elva år. Där började han samla fjärilar vilket blev ett livslångt intresse. I skolan utmärkte sig Laurent i Latin, grekiska och matematik. Det var inom matematiken som hans framtida karriär skulle vara. Medan han förberedde sig för intagningsproven till École Normale Supérieure (ENS) blev han förälskad i Marie-Hélène Lévy som var dotter till den berömda matematikern och École Polytechique professorn Paul Lévy. De förlovade sig år 1935 och gifte sig år 1938 efter det att hon genomgått en tuberkulosbehandling. De fick två barn: Marc André som blev poet och Claudine som blev professor i matematik. Marie-Hélène överkom alla problem och doktorerade år 1953 samt blev professor vid Lille år 1963. Laurents matematiska intressen riktades åt analys och sannolikhetslära där han inspirerades av farbrodern Jacques Hadamard samt svärfadern Paul Lévy.

Sa personnalité hors du commun, ses qualités de droiture et de rigueur, de générosité et d'humanité, en ont fait une référence pour plusieurs générations de scientifiques et de militants.
