He was graduated at William and Mary in 1767, engaged in the pre-Revolutionary movements, and was a member of the Virginia house of burgesses, of all the state conventions, and of the committee of safety. He served in congress in 1779-'80, and was a judge of admiralty and of the first Virginia court of appeals.

   Extractions: James Mercer was educated in Liverpool, attending University College there before entering Trinity College Cambridge to study the mathematical Tripos. Among his contemporaries there were G N Watson and J E Littlewood while he was taught by Whitehead Whittaker and Hardy Hardy had just come onto the staff at Trinity and he acted as a private tutor to Mercer. In [2] Littlewood describes the Mathematical Tripos examinations which he and Mercer sat. Describing Part I of the Tripos, Littlewood writes:- The examination consisted of papers 'first four days' on comparatively elementary subjects, the riders, however, being quite stiff, followed a week later by another 'second four days' . A pass on the first four days qualified for a degree, but the second four days carried double the marks, and since it was impossible to revise everything the leading candidates concentrated on the second four days ... On the problem paper for the first four days Mercer got out of for questions I got only . ... In the second four days ignoring the problem paper Mercer and I each got about out of each about out of in the question problem paper Mercer graduated in 1907 bracketed Senior Wrangler (first equal) with Littlewood . He was awarded a Smith's prize and, in 1909, he was elected a Fellow of Trinity. He returned to his home town of Liverpool for a while, being appointed as an Assistant Lecturer there, but soon after, when the opportunity came to return to Cambridge, he accepted a Fellowship and Lectureship in Christ's College.

    Extractions: Dr. Mercer is a Principal Physicist at the Applied Physics Laboratory and a Research Associate Professor in the Geophysics Program at the University of Washington. He received a B.S. in Physics in 1968 and a Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1983, both from the University of Washington. Dr. Mercer is a member of several professional societies, has served on many national committees, and is currently an Associate Editor of the U.S. Navy Journal of Underwater Acoustics. During his tenure of almost 30 years at APL, underwater acoustics has been the central theme of Dr. Mercer's research. His studies have covered the spectrum from basic research to advanced applications. He has authored or co-authored scores of scientific and technical publications and has served as Chief Scientist on numerous at-sea expeditions. He currently leads a team of scientists and engineers at APL and frequently shares PI responsibilities with Dr. Robert C. Spindel, Dr. Bruce Howe and Dr. Robert Odom. Later additions, entries, and corrections are derived from a transcription by Leslie A. Haskin who interviewed Mr. James M. Coon, Jr., the youngest son of James and Nancy Coon. At the time of the Haskin transcription, the original diary was in the possession of the interviewee, James M. Coon, Jr., who was a tailor living at 105 First Street, Albany, Oregon, and was loaned to Leslie Haskin to be transcribed. This rendition together with supplemental notes and clarifications is respectfully submitted by it's transcriber, Robert Lewis, for the enjoyment and edification of those who delight in the adventure of real American History as it has been recorded by it's participants and preserved for posterity by their descendants. Notes taken from Coon and Miller family history records in the possession of Robert Lewis James Madison Coon, born Sept. 24th 1813 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, was the second son of a family of eight children - seven boys and one girl - born to Michael Coon, Jr. and Elizabeth (Kelly) Coon who were married on the 6th of April, 1803 in Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia. Michael was the descendant of hardy German immigrant stock who came from the upper Rhine River Valley to York County, Pennsylvania in 1738. Michael's father, Michael Sr. and six of his brothers were members of the "German Regiment" ("Pennsylvania DEUTSCH" not "Dutch") from York County, Pennsylvania during "The War of the Rebellion" (the Revolutionary War). His wife and James' mother, Elizabeth showed her fine Irish heritage with the great surname of Kelly and was the daughter of George Kelly of Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia.

May 22, 1967, New York City), black poet and writer who became, through numerous translations, one of the foremost interpreters to the world of the black experience in the United States. Hughes's parents separated soon after his birth, and young Hughes was raised by his mother and grandmother. After his grandmother's death, he and his mother moved to half a dozen cities before reaching Cleveland, where they settled. His poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," written the summer after his graduation from high school in Cleveland, was published in Crisis (1921) and brought him considerable attention. After attending Columbia University (1921-22), he explored Harlem, forming a permanent attachment to what he called the "great dark city." He worked as a steward on a freighter bound for Africa. Back from seafaring and sojourning in Europe, he won an Opportunity magazine poetry prize in 1925. He received the Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry Award in 1926.
