His life would be dominated by the chaos that resulted from the Nazi rise to power and World War II, the war breaking out when Imre was in his final years at school. It was a difficult period for Hungary, with the country unsure whether to side with Hitler or with the allies, but in many ways Hungary had few options. Hitler decided that he could not leave his vital communications at the mercy of an uncommitted Hungarian regime. In March 1944 Hitler offered Hungary the choice of either cooperating with Germany or the German armies would occupy the country. Hungary chose cooperation and appointed a government to collaborate with Hitler. The Germans did as they pleased, suppressing opponents and arresting anyone who spoke out against them. Jews were compelled to wear a yellow star and their property was taken away. Imre had spent the war years at the University of Debrecen and he graduated in 1944 with a degree in mathematics, physics and philosophy. To avoid the Nazi persecution of Jews he changed his name to

Hogyan illeszkedett vagy került összeütközésbe a személyisége, a kora és a gondolata? Ez a dolgozat nem Lakatos terminusainak, gondolatai keletkezésének racionális rekonstrukciója. Nem áll sem Popper pártjára, aki azt mondta, hogy az életút nem különösebben fontos, ha a gondolatokkal foglalkozunk (s megjegyezte, hogy többet megtudhatunk a pókról, ha a hálóját tanulmányozzuk, mint a hálóról, ha a pókot tanulmányozzuk), s nem áll a "kontextus" jelenlegi hangsúlyozóinak oldalára sem, akik az elméletalkotók nemét, faját, osztályhelyzetét, korát és sok minden mást lényeginek tekintenek az egyén gondolatainak megértéséhez. Lakatos módosította Popper hozzáállását azáltal, hogy számításba vette az akadémiai politikát és a szóbeszédet az elméletek gyarapodásának magyarázatában, lévén maga is megrögzött pletykafészek, aki a pletykát háborús eszközként, és — ahogyan Berkson rámutatott — a vizsgálódás módszereként használta.

Due to anti-semitism his mother took him to live in Debrecen. He attended Debrecen University and graduated in 1944. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary he changed his name to Molnar and joined the underground resistance. During the war he became a committed communist and after the war once more changed his name, this time to Lakatos. In 1947 he was made a secretary in the Ministry of Education and became involved in the reform of Higher Education in Hungary. In 1948 he wrote a doctoral thesis on concept formation in science and received his degree from Budapest University. However his political prominence and "revisionist" tendencies meant that he fell foul of the campaign against the "Hungarian-Tito-ists". He was arrested in 1950 and spent the next three years in jail. He was released in 1953 and in 1954 Alfred Renyi obtained a post for him in the Mathematical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Science. His job was to translate important mathematical works into Hungarian. It was here that he first came into contact with western books and journals, in particular the work of Karl Popper and Polya. After the Hungarian uprising in 1956 he was informed of the likelihood of his re-arrest and so fled to Vienna. Whilst there he was awarded a three year Rockafeller fellowship and went to Kings College Cambridge to study under Braithwaite and Smiley. In 1958 he met Polya who advised him to prepare a case study of the "Descartes-Euler conjecture" for his doctorate. This later grew into his book "Proofs and Refutations". He joined Professor Poppers department at the LSE in 1960 and rose rapidly to become Professor of Logic in 1969.

In 1956, during a time of upheaval in Hungary, Lakatos fled to Vienna, and later reached England. He received a doctorate in philosophy in 1961 from the University of Cambridge. The book Proofs and Refutations ISBN 0521290384 ), published after his death, is based on this work.

    Extractions: I have discussed the problem of objective appraisal of scientific growth in terms of progressive and degenerating problemshifts in series of scientific theories. The most important such series in the growth of science are characterized by a certain continuity which connects their members. This continuity evolves from a genuine research programme adumbrated at the start. The programme consists of methodological rules: some tell us what paths of research to avoid (negative heuristic), and others what paths to pursue (positive heuristic). Even science as a whole can be regarded as a huge research programme with Popper's supreme heuristic rule : `devise conjectures which have more empirical content than their predecessors.' Such methodological rules may be formulated, as Popper pointed out, as metaphysical principles. For instance, the universal anti-conventiolnalist rule against exception-barring may be stated as the metaphysical principle: `Nature does not allow exceptions'. This is why Watkins called such rules `influential metaphysics'.
