Récréation proposée par le mathématicien anglais Kirkman en 1847 : Quinze demoiselles sortent chaque jour en promenade en cinq groupes de trois. Comment doivent-elles être disposées pour que l'une d'elles se trouve successivement une seule fois en compagnie de chacune des autres ? Comme chacune des filles doit se trouver avec deux de ses compagnes, il ne peut y avoir plus de sept promenades. Il s'agit alors de trouver les combinaisons possibles pendant sept jours. Voici une solution dans laquelle chaque demoiselle est représentée par un numéro de 1 à 15 : Jour 1 Jour 2 Jour 3 Jour 4 Jour 5 Jour 6 Jour 7 La solution de ce problème a inspiré Bose, Parker et Shrikhande dans leur démarche pour montrer qu'il existait des carrés gréco-latins d'ordre (4 k + 2) où k est un entier naturel supérieur à l'unité. Extractions: Thomas Kirkman published over 60 substantial mathematical papers and many more minor ones. He solved the problem of Steiner triples in 1846 in On a Problem in Combinatorics , 6 years before Steiner proposed it. He also constructed finite projective planes. Thomas attended the grammar school in Bolton where he was taught Greek and Latin but no mathematics. He did well at school but although his schoolmaster and the vicar saw that he was a potential Cambridge fellow, Thomas's father could not be persuaded and Thomas was forced to leave school at the age of 14. He worked in his father's office, continuing his study of Greek and Latin in his own time and extending his knowledge of languages by also learning French and German. After 9 years working in the office, Thomas went against his father's wishes and he entered Trinity College Dublin to study mathematics, philosophy, classics and science for his B.A. On returning to England in 1835 he entered the Church of England. He spent five years as a curate, first in Bury, then in Lymm. By 1839 he became vicar in the Parish of Southworth in Lancashire, a position he held for 52 years.

Extractions: Thomas Kirkman published over 60 substantial mathematical papers and many more minor ones. He solved the problem of Steiner triples in 1846 in On a Problem in Combinatorics , 6 years before Steiner proposed it. He also constructed finite projective planes. Thomas attended the grammar school in Bolton where he was taught Greek and Latin but no mathematics. He did well at school but although his schoolmaster and the vicar saw that he was a potential Cambridge fellow, Thomas's father could not be persuaded and Thomas was forced to leave school at the age of 14. He worked in his father's office, continuing his study of Greek and Latin in his own time and extending his knowledge of languages by also learning French and German. After 9 years working in the office, Thomas went against his father's wishes and he entered Trinity College Dublin to study mathematics, philosophy, classics and science for his B.A. On returning to England in 1835 he entered the Church of England. He spent five years as a curate, first in Bury, then in Lymm. By 1839 he became vicar in the Parish of Southworth in Lancashire, a position he held for 52 years.

Extractions: My name is Kevin Lockhart and I live in Nottingham, England. I am trying to find out as much as possible about my Kirkman line as I can. Up to now I have been fairly successful in tracing them here in Nottingham. However, two brothers, Thomas and Isaac Kirkman (and possibly a third, Robert) emigrated to the States somewhere between 1844 and 1850. Initially they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. but didn't stay too long as they are recorded as living together in Springfield twsp, Summit County, Ohio in the 1850 census.
