Kaplansky is the author of numerous books and research papers. His interests are broad, including areas such as ring theory, group theory, field theory, Galois theory, ergodic theory, algebras, metric spaces, number theory, statistics, and probability. In much of his mathematics, here is a recurring theme that might be described as "algebra with an infinite flavor." He is also regarded as a first-rate mathematical stylist. Among the many honors received by Kaplansky are the Guggenheim Fellowship, election to both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , election to the presidency of the American Mathematical Society , honorary degrees from the University of Waterloo, and Queen's University, and the 1989 Steele Prize for cumulative influence fron the American Mathematical Society. The Steele Prize citation says, in part, "...he has made striking changes in mathematics and has inspired generations of younger mathematicians." Kaplansky also received the University of Chicago Quantrell Prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The rubaiyat are poems written in the form of quatrians ( in Persian). The 19th-century English poet Edward FitzGerald translated them freely and wove them into thematically related groups. I've recently seen her perform with Cry, Cry, Cry and sponsored her concert in my home town on August 13,1999 from my posting to the Lucy-list (lucy-list@smoe.org) after the concert: Overall, a terrific evening, Lucy seemed to really enjoy herself and she and Rick were there for nearly an hour afterwards, selling CDs and signing autographs. She is scheduled to be back in Charlotte in February. I can't wait." I did change a few chords I play for her songs after watching her, but sitting in the front row with my wife and son, I didn't want to be a distraction by scribbling away during her performance. Course Content The course will consist of topics chosen by the instructor using chapters 1 - 14 of the text. On exams students are responsible for all material presented in class including any that is not in the text. Any material presented on the board or on handout sheets will be the "official" version for which students will be responsible on exams. Methodology Reading material and homework exercises will be assigned almost every time the class meets. Homework exercises will not be collected. It is your responsibility to ask questions about any difficulties encountered in these assignments. Not all material for which you are responsible will be presented in class. Since this is a 400-level course, the responsibility for learning is yours. The role of the professor is much more to facilitate your learning than to present material. You should come prepared to participate in class discussion and may anticipate being "called on" every time the class meets. Please note that class participation is a major component of the final grade. Problem Assignments There will be approximately 6 - 8 problem assignments, each consisting of several problems (usually proofs). These will be submitted and receive a letter grade. Due Dates: each assignment will have a specified due date. Problem assignments will not be accepted late except for circumstances beyond your control.

Extractions: July 13, 1996 Waring Experiments The composition of whole numbers has long fascinated both professional and amateur mathematicians. Consider, for example, the sequence of squares of whole numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and so forth. As the squares get bigger, the gaps between them get longer and longer. Clearly, most numbers are not squares of whole numbers. Some, however, can be written as the sum of two squares: 13 = 9 + 4. Others cannot. To get a sum of 6, the only squares available are 4 and 1, and that's not enough. But three squares are sufficient: 6 = 4 + 1 + 1. Similarly, 7 can't be written as the sum of three squares, but it can be written as the sum of four squares: 7 = 4 + 1 + 1 + 1. Two squares suffice for 8 (4 + 4); 9 is itself a square; 10 = 9 + 1; 11 = 9 + 1 + 1; 12 = 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 or 4 + 4 + 4. You might suspect that, at some point, four squares would no longer be enough to express a given whole number. This reasonable supposition was overturned in seventeenth century, when Pierre de Fermat proved that every positive whole number can be expresed as a sum of at most four squares. In 1777, Edward Waring, a practicing physician and mathematics professor at the University of Cambridge, conjectured that something similar could be proved for cubes, fourth powers, and so on. He stated, without proof, that it would take the sum of at most 9 cubes or 19 fourth powers to express any whole number.
