Extractions: BURNE-JONES The Rare Book collection has ten proofs from the story of Cupid and Psyche in William Morris's unpublished Earthly Paradise on five sheets of paper. The paper is the earliest made by John Batchelor in 1891-1892 for Morris in its two sizes: 28 x 41 cm and 41 x 56 cm. The first has the primrose watermark in opposite corners of the sheet and the second has the primrose watermark in all four corners of the sheet. The Jones Papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Frances M. Miller on 27 November 1974 (SHS Accession No. 1108). Additions to the collection were made on 5 March 1975 (SHS Accession No. 1127), 4 December 1975 (SHS Accession No. 1177) and 3 April 1989 (SHS Accession No. 2744). William F. Jones was born 3 November 1823 in Fayette County, Ohio, to Matthew and Elizabeth Allan Jones. William's mother died in 1827, leaving his father to care for six young children (William, Lewis, John, Willis, Mahala, and Rachel). Matthew Jones remarried within two years of his wife's death. He and his second wife (William's stepmother) had four children (Noah, George, Adeline, and Sarah). During the Civil War, William served in the Union army for three years. He was captured by Confederate forces in 1862 at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky, and held prisoner for seven months.

Extractions: Pune 411 006 Recording the feelings of local pandits in Calcutta whom Sir John Shore (Lord Teignmouth), the Governor General of India, had met at a durbar some days after Sir William Jones' death, he observed: "..( They ) could neither suppress their tears for his loss, nor find terms to express their admiration for the wonderful progress which he made in their sciences" (in Jones, Collected Works . Volume III. p.v.) When feelings of reverence and loss similar to those described above continue to be expressed about a person not only in India but the world over two full centuries after his death there surely must be something exceptional about his character and contribution. Sir William Jones was indeed a colossus who strode across the intellectual scene of the 18 th century. Extractions: 4th Secretary of the Navy, 19 January 1813 - 1 December 1814 William Jones was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1760. Apprenticed in a shipyard, during the American War of Independence he saw combat in the battles of Trenton and Princeton and later served at sea. In the decades that followed the war he was a successful merchant in Charleston, South Carolina, and in Philadelphia. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1800 and was offered the office of Secretary of the Navy in 1801, but declined and remained in Congress to the end of his term in 1803. With the War of 1812 raging, William Jones became Secretary of the Navy in January 1814. His policies contributed greatly to American success on the Great Lakes and to a strategy of coastal defense and commerce raiding on the high seas. In late 1814, near the end of his term, he made recommendations on the reorganization of the Navy Department. These led to the establishment of the Board of Commissioners system which operated from 1815 until 1842. During much of 1813 and into 1814, Jones also served as acting Secretary of the Treasury and in 1816 was appointed President of the Second Bank of the United States. He returned to commerical pursuits in 1819. William Jones died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on 6 September 1831.

Extractions: Although of little importance as a mathematician, William Jones is well known to historians of mathematics since he corresponded with many 17th Century mathematicians, including Newton . He was, however, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1711. Jones served at sea, teaching mathematics on board ship between 1695 and 1702. After his voyages were over he became a teacher of mathematics in London. He also held a number of posts in government offices. Jones published Synopsis palmariorum mathesios 1706 , a book intended for beginners which included the differential calculus and infinite series. This book is also famed since the symbol p is used in it with its modern meaning. Jones served on the Royal Society committee appointed to decide who had invented the infinitesimal calculus, Newton or Leibniz. Navigation was also a topic which interested Jones and his first published work was A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation.
