Extractions: During the Middle Ages the known world was divided between Christian and Muslim cultures. Texts by Greek doctors such as Claudius Galen and Hippocrates began to be used in the Islamic World, for medical study research and training. One doctor who played a central role at this time was Avicenna. Who was Avicenna? Avicenna wrote over 200 books including the famous Canon (Medical Code), a textbook that drew upon existing medical knowledge as well as new discoveries. It was divided into five sections and covered topics such as diseases, fevers and recipes for remedies. His own medical practice emphasised the need to take care when performing surgery so that open wounds did not become infected. How did Avicenna change medicine?

Extractions: Abu Ali ibn Sino, known as Avicenna in the West, was born in the village of Afshana near Bukhara, a 2500-year old city in the west of Uzbekistan. He displayed exceptional intellectual prowess as a child (at the age of ten he already knew the Qurani Karim by heart and was proficient in the Arabic classics). During the next six years he devoted himself to Islam Jurisprudence, Philosophy and Natural Science and studied Logic, Euclid and the Almeagest. He turned his attention to Medicine at the age of 17 years and found it, in his own words, "not difficult". However he was greatly troubled by metaphysical problems and in particular the works of Aristotle. By chance, he obtained a manual on this subject by other celebrated Mavoraunnahr philosopher - al-Forobiy which solved his difficulties. As al-Juzzhoniy states, Ibn Sino completed 21 major and 24 minor works on philosophy, medicine, theology, geometry, astronomy and the like. Another source (Brockellman) attributes 99 books to Ibn Sina comprising 16 on medicine, 68 on theology and metaphysics 11 on astronomy and four on verse. The young Bu Ali received his early education in Bukhara, and by the age of ten had become well versed in the study of the Qur'an and various sciences. He started studying philosophy by reading various Greek, Muslim and other books on this subject and learnt logic and some other subjects from Abu Abdallah Natili, a famous philosopher of the time. While still young, he attained such a degree of expertise in medicine that his fame spread far and wide. At the age of 17, he was fortunate in curing Nooh Ibn Mansoor, the King of Bukhhara, of an illness in which all the well-known physicians had given up hope. On his recovery, the King wished to reward him, but the young physician only desired permission to use his uniquely stocked library. On his father's death, Bu Ali left Bukhara and traveled to Jurjan where Khawarizm Shah welcomed him. There, he met his famous contemporary Abu Raihan al-Biruni. Later he moved to Ray and then to Hamadan, where he wrote his famous book Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb . Here he treated Shams al-Daulah, the King of Hamadan, for severe colic. From Hamadan, he moved to Isfahn, where he completed many of his monumental writings. Nevertheless, he continued traveling and the excessive mental exertion as well as political turmoil spoilt his health. Finally, he returned to Hamadan where he died in 1037 A.D.

The state the vibration itself is in, i.e., the continuity of its parts, its evenness, or unevenness, and its branching, produce the acuteness and the density (of the sound). The first two (namely, the continuity and evenness) cause the acuteness, the other two, the density. It is the state in which the vibration is, by reason of the forms imposed upon it by the various exits and distractions, that forms (each particular) speech-sound, for a speech-sound is an accidental form of sound audibly distinguishable from another sound that has similar acuteness and density. In reality, some speech-sounds are simple entities whose formation is the result of complete obstruction of the sound, or of the air which produces the sound, followed by a release impulsion. 'Abd Allah b. al-Hasan b. 'Ali Ibn Sina (known in Europe as Avicenna) was born in the village of Afshana in the vicinity of Bukhara (in what is now Uzbekistan), in 370 AH (980 AD) - the generally accepted date - of an Ismailian family concerned with intellectual sciences and philosophical inquiry, all of which had its effect upon the scientific career of Avicenna. So Avicenna lived in the fourth century of the Islamic era, the most flourishing 'Abbasid period in respect of learning and knowledge, which stands in complete contrast to the political situation at that time. Learning was much in demand, scholars were numerous, libraries were filled with the outpourings of the scholars of Islam, and with translations made from the sciences of other nations in accordance with the desires of caliphs and viziers.

He was a famous Islamic philosopher and physician. Ibn Sina was born into a middle class family and his father was the governor of a village in one of Nuh ibn Mansur's estates. He was educated by his father, and was a very intelligent child. By the age of ten, ibn Sina had memorised the entire Qur'an and several volumes of the Arabic poetry. Ibn Sina began studying medicine when he was thirteen and mastered the subject by the age of sixteen, when he began his practice. Ibn Sina was a court physician for the Samanid ruler in Bukhara - who was overthrown a year latter. From 1023 to his death in 1037, he served as scientific advisor with the local ruler of Esfahan. He also studied logic and metaphysics. In his autobiography, ibn Sina stressed that he was mostly self-taught but admits that he received instruction at several critical points in his life. Extractions: Died: June 1037 in Hamadan , Persia (now Iran) Ibn Sina is often known by his Latin name of Avicenna, although most references to him today have reverted to using the correct version of ibn Sina. We know many details of his life for he wrote an autobiography which has been supplemented with material from a biography written by one of his students. The autobiography is not simply an account of his life, but rather it is written to illustrate his ideas of reaching the ultimate truth, so it must be carefully interpreted. A useful critical edition of this autobiography appears in [7] while a new translation appears in [9]. The course of ibn Sina's life was dominated by the period of great political instability through which he lived. The Samanid dynasty, the first native dynasty to arise in Iran after the Muslim Arab conquest, controlled Transoxania and Khorasan from about 900. Bukhara was their capital and it, together with Samarkand, were the cultural centres of the empire. However, from the middle of the 10th century, the power of the Samanid's began to weaken. By the time ibn Sina was born, Nuh ibn Mansur was the Sultan in Bukhara but he was struggling to retain control of the empire. Ibn Sina's father was the governor of a village in one of Nuh ibn Mansur's estates. He was educated by his father, whose home was a meeting place for men of learning in the area. Certainly ibn Sina was a remarkable child, with a memory and an ability to learn which amazed the scholars who met in his father's home. By the age of ten he had memorised the Qur'an and most of the Arabic poetry which he had read. When ibn Sina reached the age of thirteen he began to study medicine and he had mastered that subject by the age of sixteen when he began to treat patients. He also studied logic and

Extractions: Donors celebrate scholarship awards Members of the Detroit areas Arab and Chaldean-American community gathered at a festive autumn dinner in the home of Drs. Riad and Ghada Khatib to award scholarship recipients from the ibn Sina Endowed Scholarship Fund. Donors were able to meet School of Medicine Dean John Crissman and congratulate student winners. The evening featured authentic Middle-Eastern dishes prepared by members of the planning committee that has, in recent years, produced a series of successful fund-raising events for the endowment campaign. Physicians, medical students and other members of the Arab and Chaldean-American community raised $200,000 for the scholarship fund, named in honor of ibn Sina, the influential Arabic physician and scholar whose writings provided the basis of medical knowledge throughout the Arab world and in European universities for centuries. The evenings highlight was the introduction of three current School of Medicine students designated as the first ibn Sina scholarship recipients, based on their academic records, service and demonstrated interest in Arab and Chaldean culture.
