He went to London to seek more opportunities and published Optica prom o ta Next he went to the University of Padua in Italy to study and work. There he published Vera circuli et hyperbola e quadratura (1667) and These two works looked at areas of geometric shapes, properties of series, and the difference between algebraic and transcendental functions. The later book also contained a proof of the fundamental theorem of calculus Gregory returned to London and then Scotland in 1668 and was appointed the professor of mathematics at St. Andrews College in Scotland. During the second half of the eighteenth century, the two dominant advocates of determinism or necessitarianism as it was then called were David Hume and Joseph Priestley. Defenders of free will then called liberty typically targeted Hume or Priestley, attempting to show the absurdity of their views. The Edinburgh physician James Gregory (17531821) was an original and forceful thinker and a champion of libertarianism. He published his two-volume Philosophical and Literary Essays (1792) in which he specifically attacks Hume's conception of necessity, approaching the issue as a scientist as well as a philosopher. Throughout his career Gregory sparked controversy by insulting his opponents, which he does here by accusing Hume of mala fide , or bad faith. He went to Middlebury College and graduated from Amherst College in 1850. He began a business of selling high quality seeds in 1850 in Marblehead, Massachusetts after he sent some winter squash seeds that his father had raised to a farmer who had requested some in New England Farmer . His business was called the Gregory Seed Business. He sent Hubbard squash seeds all over the United States. In 1875 he purchased the Burbank potato that had just been developed by Luther Burbank. It was Burbanks first success at plant breeding done while he was a gardener in Massachusetts. Gregory had over 400 acres in seed farms. He wrote and distributed many treatises on different agricultural subjects, and lectured extensively on agricultural and horticultural topics. He died on February 20, 1910.

Extractions: Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity James Gregorie (he favoured this Scottish spelling over 'Gregory') was born in Drumoak, near Aberdeen, Scotland, in November 1638 . His father having died young, he was sent by his older brother to Aberdeen to attend grammar school and then Marischal College. Their mother had taught her sons to love geometry, and everyone hoped that James in particular would developed his clear talent in mathematics, and also his growing interests in optics and astronomy. The young graduate established a grown-up reputation in London in , with a digest of what he had learned thus far, the Optica Promota. It was unremarkable except for some very original thoughts on a compact reflecting telescope. Suddenly he had admirers in the scientific establishment. They included John Collins, accountant and science gossip, Robert Hooke, the Oxford physicist who eventually built the telescope, and Sir Robert Moray, Scots polymath and founding member of the Royal Society, who introduced him to as many influential men as he could. The telescope design also attracted the attention of a young man in Cambridge, one Isaac Newton, who was at work on a similar project of his own; Gregorie carried on much friendly correspondence with him later. He bolstered his reputation in by moving to Padua for a few years, for study under Stefano degli Angeli, pupil of Evangelista Torricelli (

Extractions: James Gregory Dr Gregory had early bent his acute and discriminating mind to the study of metaphysics and in 1792, he published a volume, entitled "Philosophical and Literary Essays," in which is to be found one of the most original and forcible refutations of the doctrine of Necessity, which has ever appeared. His reputation as a Latinist was unrivalled in Scotland in his own day; and the numerous inscriptions which he was consequently requested to write in this tongue were characterized by extraordinary beauty of expression and arrangement. His only philological publication, however, is a "Dissertation on the Theory of the Moods of Verbs," which appears in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1790. Dr Gregorys eminence as a man of science, and his fame throughout Europe, were testified by his being one of the few British honoured with a seat in the Institute of France. While officiating for nearly fifty years as a medical teacher, Dr Gregory carried on an extensive and lucrative practice in Edinburgh. As a physician, he enjoyed the highest reputation, notwithstanding a certain severe sincerity, and occasional
