He made towering contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics (his Principles of Quantum Mechanics has never been out of print since it was first published in 1930) and he was one of the principal creators of quantum field theory. In 1928 he combined relativity and quantum mechanics in the Dirac equation, which provides a natural description for the spin of the electron and which led to the prediction, by Dirac himself, of the existence of anti-matter. To celebrate Dirac’s centenary at Congress there will be a half-day meeting, starting at 9am Tuesday 9 April, with talks on Dirac’s life and work. The Plenary lecture at noon on the same day will also focus on Dirac. This meeting should be of interest to all physicists attending Congress, and it is hoped, will make Dirac’s name better known to the public at large.     Extractions: ABSTRACT A considerable part of modern physics rests on the pioneering contributions of P.A.M. Dirac, Nobel laureate of 1933 and born one hundred years ago. Among these contributions, his introduction of antielectrons (more generally antimatter) in 1931 is perhaps the most important. Although speculations about antimatter can be found back in the Victorian era, it was only in 1930-31 that the astounding notion was justified scientifically, as a consequence of the relativistic wave equation that Dirac had found in 1928. The lecture will focus on the early events from 1928 to 1933 (when Dirac speculated about entire antiworlds), but also outline parts of the later history of antimatter, including its role in cosmological theory.
