Hij was de tweede zoon van Henry Cayley en Maria Antonia Doughty, beide afkomstig uit gegoede families. Henry Cayley was een koopman die met Rusland handelde en daarom bracht Arthur de eerste paar jaar van zijn leven grotendeels in Sint Petersburg door. Toen Arthur acht jaar was gaf zijn vader het koopmansbestaan op en de familie vestigde zich definitief in Engeland. King's College School in Londen. Al vroeg uitte zijn wiskundig talent zich: net als de jonge Gauss was Cayley goed in het doen van lange numerieke berekeningen, die hij vaak ter ontspanning deed. Hij was met grote voorsprong de beste wiskundige van de klas en zijn leraren zagen een grote toekomst binnen de wiskunde voor hem weggelegd. Aanvankelijk was Cayley vader er erg op tegen dat zijn zoon wiskunde zou gaan studeren. Het hoofd van de school wist hem echter te overtuigen van de talenten van zijn zoon en zo ging Arthur Cayley in 1838 naar Trinity College in Cambridge, destijds en nog altijd een van Engelands meest prestigieuse universiteiten.

Mentre era ancora un studente universitario pubblicò tre scritti sul nuovo " Cambridge Mathematical Journal " edito da Duncan Gregory. Cayley laureò come Senior Wrangler e vinse il primo premio Smith. Per quattro anni insegnò a Cambridge avendo vinto una borsa di studio e, durante questo periodo, pubblicò 28 articoli sul Canbridge Mathematical Journal Come professore di Matematica Pura i suoi doveri erano di spiegare ed insegnare i principi di matematica pura e aplicarsi nel far avanzare quella scienza. Molto presto nel 1849 Cayley scrisse un trattato collegando le sue idee alla permutazione di Cauchy . Nel 1854 scrisse due articoli straordinari per le intuizioni sui gruppi astratti. Allora l'unico gruppo conosciuto era quello di permutazione e poichè questa era un'area radicalmente nuova, Cayley definisce ancora un gruppo astratto e dà una tabella per mostrare la moltiplicazione del gruppo. Ottiene la "tabella di Cayley" di alcuni speciali gruppi di permutazione ma, molto più rilevante per l'introduzione del concetto di gruppo astratto, lui realizzò che le matrici e i quaterni erano gruppi. Nel 1881 fu invitato a tenere un corso di lettura alla Johns Hopkins University negli USA, dove il suo amico Sylvester era il professore di matematica. Qui trascorse da gennaio a maggio dove tenne conferenze sulle funzioni Abelian e Theta.

The most important of his work is in developing the algebra of matrices (the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem), work in non-euclidean geometry and n-dimensional geometry. (1596 - 1650) - Born in La Haye (now Descartes),Touraine, France. Due to a medical condition he was granted to permision to remain in bed until 11am, whice he did everyday of his life. He was a philosopher who was primarily interested in mathematics. He lived in Paris for a while before travelling throughout Europe to countries such as Holland where began work on his first major treatise on physics. which includes his application of algebra to geometry from which we now have Cartesian geometry.

The algebra of matrices was the tool Heisenberg used in 1925 for his revolutionary work in quantum mechanics.
