Extractions: Thomas Bradwardine 's date of birth is not known with any certainty. In [1] the date is given as between 1290 and 1300, in [2] the date is given as about 1290 while, for example, in [15] it is given as about 1300. These are merely guesses based on the first definite date we know for Bradwardine and that August 1321 when he became a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. August 1321 is the date on which Bradwardine was awarded his B.A. We have merely taken an average of the various birth dates suggested! We have given Bradwardine's birthplace as Chichester, but again this is based on little evidence. We know from Bradwardine's writings that his father, at the time of writing, was living in Chichester but since this must have been written more than twenty years after Bradwardine was born, it is somewhat fanciful to assume his father had not moved. Although it is not certain, there is strong evidence to suggest that Bradwardine remained at Merton College until 1335. He held various university posts during this time including proctor and he received a number of degrees such as M.A. in 1323 and B.Th. some time before 1333. It is during this period at Oxford that almost all of his works on logic, mathematics, and philosophy were written.

Thomas Bradwardine (c. ), English archbishop, called "the Profound Doctor," was born either at Hartfield in Sussex or at Chichester. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford , where he took the degree of doctor of divinity, and acquired the reputation of a profound scholar, a skilful mathematician and an able divine. He was afterwards raised to the high offices of chancellor of the university and professor of divinity. From being chancellor of the diocese of London, he became chaplain and confessor to Edward III , whom he attended during his wars in France. On his return to England, he was successively appointed prebendary of Lincoln, archdeacon of Lincoln (1347), and in archbishop of Canterbury . He died of the plague at Lambeth on August 26 1349, forty days after his consecration.

Born about 1290; died in London, 26 August, 1349. His birthplace is variously assigned to Bradwardine, Hertfield, or Cowden; but he himself states that he was born at Chichester. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and in 1325 was one of the proctors of the university who took part in the litigation between the university and Cardinal Galhardus de Mora, Archdeacon of Oxford. As a theologian he attained great fame, being known as the Doctor Profundus. His theological lectures delivered at Oxford were expanded into the famous treatise on grace known as "Summa Doctoris Profundi" or "De causa Dei contra Pelagium et de virtute causarum ad suos Mertonenses". Bradshaw expresses the humblest opinion of his own abilities, and he certainly had no delicate ear for rhythm. His sincerity is abundantly evident, and his piety is admitted even by John Bale,i hostile as he was to monkish writers. W. Herbert2 thought that a Lyfe of Saynt Radegunde, also printed by Pynson, was certainly by Bradshaw. The only extant copy is in the Britwell library. Pynsons edition of the Holy Lyfe is very rare, only five copies being known,. A reprint copying the original type was edited by Mr.Edward Hawkins for the Chetham Society in 2848, and by Dr Carl Hortsmann for the Early English Text Society in 1887.
