(12)-259 (3) pp. 18th century text in Latin on the causes and cures of scurvy. Describes symptoms, cites ancient and modern authors. This work post-dates Lind's 1753 treatise, but does not mention it, as far as I can determine. However, citrus fruits play a part in some of the many remedies the author proposes. In fact, the true cause of scurvy was not understood until the 20th century, when vitamins were discovered. Mispaginated after p. 123 as called for in OCLC, but the errata leaf cited there is not present, apparently having never been bound in. Not in Garrison-Morton. Bowditch, Nathaniel - A late 18th/early 19th century mathematician, astronomer, and sailor who "wrote the book" on navigation. John Hamilton Moore's The Practical Navigator was the leading navigational text when Bowditch first went out to sea, and had been for many years. Early in his first voyage, however, Bowditch began noticing errors in Moore's book, which he recorded and later used in preparing an American edition of Moore's work. The revisions were to such an extent that Bowditch was named the principal author, and the title was changed to

    Extractions: ON THE HORIZON Salem, MA - The Bowditch Initiative's Bowditch Bicentennial Committees are gearing up for a summer of exciting events that celebrate the fascinating maritime history and American heritage that is anchored in Salem, Massachusetts. Events celebrating the remarkable contributions to navigation of Salem native son Nathaniel Bowditch and navigation past-present-and-future will concentrate on the weekends of July 13 and August 9, 2002. Most events are free and open to the public. Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) was a renowned navigator and mathematician. In 1802 he published The New American Practical Navigator. It is the bicentennial of this publication, commonly called "The Bowditch" that is being celebrated in Salem this summer. The Bowditch has been translated into dozens of languages and has remained the sailor's bible through more than seventy editions. It is still used on all commissioned US vessels today. The US Navy, US Coast Guard and National Imagery and mapping Agency (NIMA), as well as local Yacht Clubs and the National Park Service are expected to contribute to the celebrations scheduled for July 13 and 14. Coinciding with celebrations of The Bowditch and its author, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site will be hosting its annual Salem Maritime Festival. Visitors to Derby and Central Wharves in Salem will find re-enactors, demonstrations, live music, plenty of food, and visiting vessels. Highlights of the weekend's schedule include:
