As most of the SBE texts are in the public domain , we have a long term project of converting the entire series to etexts. This page is a progress report on this project, and a way of centralizing known bibliographic information on the SBE. A few of the texts in this series were already available on the Internet, albeit without any bibliographic information, footnotes or introductions. Others have been scanned at sacred-texts for the first time, notably the Upanishads. At this point, just over half of these volumes have been converted into electronic versions; twenty of these have been done at sacred-texts.com. The difficulties of turning these books into etexts are enormous, and requires great care and diligence. The typography is, in a word, substandard; not to diminish the fact that it must have been a substantial accomplishment for its time. The system of transcription of non-western alphabets uses specialized italics and diacritics. The result is that every one of the SBE volumes gives optical character recognition (OCR) software the fits. It is not unusual to have to spend up to 100 hours proofing each volume. One volume (

Extractions: THE GOTRA SURVEY PAGE In the vedic age, a large number of gotra-gaNas are known to have existed. A large number of these lineages have become extinct over the course of history. Many scholars have attempted to collect and collate gotra related information during the last two millennia. Many of these authors have depended upon the extensive listings contained in the various sutras. However, the most recent sutras date back to pre-christian times. Some other authors have collected such data from specific communities. Two such works are the BrahmaNotpattimaartanDa (19th century) and the Jaatibhaaskara (early 20th century). These works provide much valuable information. But given the explosive growth of the Indian population in the 20th century, these works have become outdated. Hence, the present overall status of extant gotras among the brahmanas of India remains uncertain. Through this web based survey, we hope that over time, we shall be able to obtain a more current picture of existing gotras in India. Extractions: Again we must start with some background information for our current study. We must understand the conquest of India some four thousand years ago by a group of Aryans belonging to the same stock as those who later made Zoroastrianism their national creed. This group of ancient Aryans burst into India, established themselves as the dominant race, and instituted the intricate system of Priestly and sacerdotal law and discipline known as Brahmanism. Since the political problems of India were quite different from those of Egypt or Iran, the religion of India developed along entirely different lines than we have seen before. These changes will be important when we look later at how the Essenes adopted many of the tenants of Brahmanism. India already possessed a teeming population, which had learned to wring subsistence from the soil by agriculture: the Aryans could, therefore, perpetuate their position, privileges, and sovereignty only by divine sanctions. Revelation, as determined by the Priesthood became an instrument, not of national, but of class and race policy.

Extractions: Seems like even a few religious leaders, who are actually following Advaita, agree with me. Even a cursory analysis of Sankara's commentary on Brahma sutra reveals that some parts were later day interpolation, as they contradict his sayings elsewhere in the same treatise. I can post in detail, when I get some time. That would be a seperate thread in itself. Interpolation, even otherwise, is a distinct possibility. Sankara mutts, all of them, have been without a head for long periods of time after the Muslim invasion. Some were actually resurrected by the barbaric Muslim kings. In those days, the works were preserved only on manuscripts written on palmyrah leaves. They lasted only for a short time. It doesn't take a great effort for someone to rewrite them, to suit his fancy.

A relationship to the Highest Good naturally builds a bond among all members of the communityfor all people are as brothers and sisters with the absolute value of (potential) Enlightened Beings or God's children. Giving alms and charity is a concrete expression of this spiritual bond. Along with admonitions to practice charity, texts such as the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats from the New Testament, liken helping a poor man to giving offerings to God or the highest saints. Charity is not excused even for the poorest giver, according to several texts. Finally, we have passages on hospitality, including two texts lauding exemplary acts of charity, by a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the Hindu householder Rantideva, who gave food and water to guests even though it meant that they would have to go without.
