He was known as "Albert the Great" and " Doctor Universalis " (Universal Doctor) in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge. He was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day and surpassed all his contemporaries, except perhaps Roger Bacon , in the knowledge of nature. In general, the New England Transcendentalists were not exactly pleased with Catholicism. Indeed, many Transcendentalists, such as Convers Francis , condemned the evils of what they called "Popery." Then, too, conditions were not helped by the negative reaction of most Transcendentalists to Orestes Brownson 's disdainfully leaving their group, in the 1840s, and joining the Catholics instead. Yet, one of the all-abiding strengths of Transcendentalism, and in fact perhaps the major reason why Transcendentalism is no 'ism', is that it possesses no systematic doctrine from the standpoint of which it can exclude any reasonable point of view. That is to say, Transcendentalism even out-freethinks the freethinkers by freely admitting almost any thought without being limited to so-called freethought alone. Rather, it is the feeling, motivation, context, and spirit of the thoughtmore so than the thought itselfthat ultimately matter to Transcendentalism. In this manner, and for this reason, Transcendentalists such as Theodore Parker could express admiration for men like Albertus Magnus and

Z Known as Albert the Great; scientist, philosopher, and theologian, born c. 1206; died at Cologne, 15 November 1280. He is called "the Great", and "Doctor Universalis" (Universal Doctor), in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge, for he was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day, and surpassed all his contemporaries, except perhaps Roger Bacon (1214-94), in the knowledge of nature. Ulrich Engelbert, a contemporary, calls him the wonder and the miracle of his age: "Vir in omni scientia adeo divinus, ut nostri temporis stupor et miraculum congrue vocari possit" (De summo bono, tr. III, iv). I. LIFE Studium Generale of Cologne, in which Albert was appointed Regent, whilst Thomas became second professor and Magister Studentium (Master of Students). In 1254 Albert was elected Provincial of his Order in Germany. He journeyed to Rome in 1256, to defend the Mendicant Orders against the attacks of William of St. Amour, whose book, "De novissimis temporum periculis", was condemned by Pope Alexander IV, on 5 October, 1256. During his sojourn in Rome Albert filled the office of Master of the Sacred Palace (instituted in the time of St. Dominic), and preached on the Gospel of St. John and the Canonical Epistles. He resigned the office of Provincial in 1257 in order to devote himself to study and to teaching. He was both a student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician , since he was repeatedly charged by some of his unfriendly contemporaries with holding communications with the devil , practicing the craft of magic , and with the making of a demonic automata able to speak. He was one of the alchemists reputed to have succeeded in discovering the Philosopher's Stone . After a alleged encounter with the blessed Virgin, Albertus stared espousing holy orders, and eventually won eminence in the clerical profession, being made Bishop of Ratisbon. Albertus was born at Larvingen, on the Danube, sometime between 1193 and 1206, and the term Magnus is not the result of his reputation, but is the Latin equivalent of his family name, de Groot. According to tradition, he was the inventor of the pistol and the cannon, but, while is unlikely that the credit is due to him for this, the mere fact that he was thus acknowledged indicates that his scientific skill was recognized by a few, if only a few, of the men of his own time. He died at Cologne, the exact date being unknown (some say 1280).

He was especially noted for his introduction of Greek and Arabic science and philosophy to the medieval world. Born in Lauingen, Bavaria, to a noble military family, Albert was studying at Padua in 1223, when he was attracted to the Dominican Order of Preachers, then less than ten years old. He was ordained in Germany and taught there before going on to the University of Paris, where he became a master of theology in 1245 and subsequently held one of the Dominican chairs of theology. Among his early students was Thomas Aquinas. Albert was an influential teacher, church administrator, and preacher. He traveled through western Europe on behalf of his order and served as a provincial and, briefly, as bishop of Regensburg (1260-62) before returning to teaching and research. Albert was a key figure in the assimilation of Aristotelian philosophy into medieval Scholasticism and in the revival of natural science that it inspired. Early in the 13th century, a body of philosophical and scientific writings previously unknown to Western philosophers and theologians became a disturbing force in Scholastic circles. These Latin writings, based on Arabic translations of the works of Aristotle, were accompanied by the writings of Arab commentators, notably Avicenna and Averroës. As such, they presented a point of view foreign to the church-trained Scholastics, whose knowledge of Aristotle was confined to his logic, as taught and interpreted for centuries by the church, in the tradition of St. Augustine and the Neoplatonists.

The Prize is aimed at young researchers who have already read their doctoral theses or dissertations at the University of Alicante, within the Area of Chemistry during the academic year 2001/02 The aim of the Alicante Section of the Spanish Royal Association of Chemistry is both to recognise the work carried out by our young researchers and promote the preparation of the dissertation as the starting stage to research activity for new graduates in Chemistry. CONDITIONS Eligible candidates: Ph.D. holders or graduates who have read their doctoral theses or Dissertation at the University of Alicante between 1st October 2001 and 30th September 2002.
