He completed his doctorate in 1930. In 1935 he went to Harvard University and in 1936 he was one of the first to be awarded the Fields Medal . Kun lisäksi meromorfifunktioiden arvojenjakautumisteorian luojan, Rolf Nevanlinnan vaikutus Ahlforsiin oli suuri, oli luonnollista, että Ahlforsin tutkimusalueeksi muodostui juuri funktioteoria. Lars Ahlfors kohosi maailmanmaineeseen yhdellä iskulla jo vuonna 1929, koska hän ratkaisi täydellisesti ns. Denjoyn hypoteesin.
