Product Description

The workplace isn’t what it used to be—and neither is the workforce.

Today’s companies have fewer hierarchical layers. The nature of work is also more virtual, collaborative, and transparent than at any previous time. Information flows move every which way, shifting from top-down to all-in. And the workforce is forever altered too. Sweeping changes in expectations across backgrounds, experiences, generations, and gender are challenging long-held, inflexible beliefs of the relationship between work and life—and the very meaning of success.

These transformations, observe Cathy Benko and Molly Anderson, are also upending the ways people advance along their career paths. Careers zig and zag. Work is what you do, not where you go. The traditional corporate ladder, firmly rooted in the industrial era, proffers a one-size-fits-all view of the world of work. In this book, the authors argue convincingly that a lattice model is better suited for today’s global business environment.
The Corporate Lattice provides a framework to scale options for how careers are built, how work is done, and how participation is fostered. The corporate lattice model offers leaders a strategic approach to making the most of the shifting landscape by:

• Recognizing that there is no longer a universal view of success but rather a multiplicity of ways to grow and contribute.
• Challenging traditional models that pit high performance and career–life fit as opposing forces.
• Providing a cost-effective, systematic method to deliver more individualized and engaging work experiences.

Offering much more than theory, the authors illustrate the lattice model using rich, in-depth case studies of exemplars including Cisco, Deloitte LLP, and Thomson Reuters. They also explore the changing role each individual plays in directing his or her own lattice journey.

As businesses are challenged to scale economies of innovation and flexibility, investing for the future using yesteryear’s corporate ladder blueprint is futile. The Corporate Lattice teaches organizations how to adapt to the changing world and reveals why lattice organizations are both more productive—and profitable.

4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read but more anecdotal than prescriptive. . .
Written by two Talent Executives at Deloitte LLP, "The Corporate Lattice" message is one of change, customization and the pressing need for greater organizational response.Explored from the vantage point of business consultants, the authors substantiate their claims using various business case studies.

Although lacking the statistical analyses one would expect from consultants striving to show where they add value, there are some areas throughout the book where the authors' positions are bolstered by the data provided (see chapter 6 and the discussion on Cisco). While the quantitative research is somewhat disappointing, the qualitative insight is rich. Conducted with numerous CEOs and other Corporate Executives much of the information noted is current and relevant (as recent as 2009).

In contrasting the corporate ladder to the corporate lattice, the authors' suggest the key differentiator is the notion of communication and career advancement moving along a continuum beyond the standard up and down movement. Proposing instead that the movement is much more multidirectional, they posit the concept of the lattice noting "Boomers, and Generations X and Y are more alike than different in their desire to fit life and work together" (p 40).The authors' central tenet is that the corporate ladder model is no longer relevant and in fact, has not been for decades. Of particular note is the concept that employees are no longer focused on just climbing the rungs of the corporate ladder but appear more interested in finding "career-life fit" - a term coined by the authors meaning the employee's desire to find balance between one's career and personal life.

While the book is interesting the authors make quite a few assumptions. There may still be those employees who find value in moving up the corporate ladder and while the authors' propose a "one-size doesn't fit all" mentality, to say that the corporate lattice proposition is the latest solution is to advance the notion of a "one size fits all mentality". Lacking a theoretical approach the authors' choices of sources seem a mis-match for the information they are delivering in some areas. Almost as if name dropping, Tom Peters and other notable management experts are quoted which at times devalues the authors' proposition only because the framework presented is organizationally based and the experts quoted are more focused on the individual. The use of some of the sources weaken the writing and appear to be used to add credibility to a work that should be able to stand on its' own merit.Confusing at times, the reader struggled to understand the authors' intended audience. While the authors suggest the purpose of the book is targeted at the organization; the book ends with a discourse on the individual in the context of one's place in the organization which seems to be somewhat disjointed.

A quick read, the premise of the "The Corporate Lattice" is to guide organizations through the morphing global business environment so that they can effectively navigate "the corporate lattice" and for the most part the book delivers. However, there are places where one is challenged to decipher the meaning in such catch-phrases as lattice versus matrix. The authors propose the matrix organization is outdated; however, there appears to be very little functional difference between the matrix and lattice structures as applied in this writing.

The strength of the book is in the insights provided by the Deloitte team in relation to their client base. The reader is of the opinion that the two tools discussed - the Lattice Career Pathways tool (pg 64) and the Mass Career Customization tool (p 73-74) require greater focus and discourse. If the authors' intent is in fact to educate organizations then one would expect, at the very least, some guidance in the acquisition and use of the tools. Additionally, while the sources cited are rich, the reader would benefit more from research conducted by the authors themselves. Given the breadth of the experience encapsulated in the Deloitte team, providing the results of the organization's findings might possibly have further solidified the authors' purpose.

On the surface, this book may appear to be another addition to a long list of management books, but the authors provide some practical application in guiding organizations towards operating more successfully in a technologically connected workforce and in acknowledging the generational differences that exist in today's employee pool. Although more anecdotal than prescriptive, there are valuable research nuggets available to the reader with time to delve through the sources. While this book is targeted at the organization and seeks to tackle the individual employee's needs, it fails to address how leadership impacts this design. The reader is of the opinion that any organization that does not focus on great leadership will not produce high performance results no matter what business model is employed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for managers and business leaders
This book is a fascinating read. It really helped to create a visualization and framework for all the discrete changes that are happening in the workplace. The authors did a great job of articulating a comprehensive business model that offers more than just the one-off solutions that many companies attempt.Instead they show how changes need to be made across the organization in how work gets done, how we collaborate and interact with each other and how careers are developed.I've worked for lattice and non-lattice style organizations and I can personally say that I've achieved more and been a far more effective manager in lattice organizations.

Product Description
R is rapidly growing in popularity as the environment of choice for data analysis and graphics both in academia and industry. Lattice brings the proven design of Trellis graphics (originally developed for S by William S. Cleveland and colleagues at Bell Labs) to R, considerably expanding its capabilities in the process. Lattice is a powerful and elegant high level data visualization system that is sufficient for most everyday graphics needs, yet flexible enough to be easily extended to handle demands of cutting edge research. Written by the author of the lattice system, this book describes it in considerable depth, beginning with the essentials and systematically delving into specific low levels details as necessary. No prior experience with lattice is required to read the book, although basic familiarity with R is assumed.

The book contains close to150 figures produced with lattice. Many of the examples emphasize principles of good graphical design; almost all use real data sets that are publicly available in various R packages. All code and figures in the book are also available online, along with supplementary material covering more advanced topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, excellent package...
Exactly the book you want if you're going to use lattice. And if you're serious about graphics in R you want to be using either lattice or ggplot2. I've been very pleased with the book and have tabbed quite a few pages for quick reference.

As a side note, lattice is like R's base graphics on steroids. After having this book for a while, I decided to investigate ggplot2, the other major R graphics package, and I think I'll stick with ggplot2. It has a totally different philosophy from lattice (and thus base graphics) which allows for an incredible flexibility without resorting to tinkering with the engine (i.e. lattice's panel functions). ggplot2 has a draft PDF manual online and a nice reference website.

I ultimately chose ggplot2, but I still give this lattice book high marks and will keep it nearby for if I have to work with lattice. With its status as a recommended R package, lattice is more widespread and several packages now use it as their graphics foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book
It is hard to imagine a software book that beats this one. Sarkar has shown huge technical skill
in his development of the lattice package for R, and in this book he spells out how anyone with
the time and inclination can become proficient in using the package creatively. This book is
simply superb: well organized, comprehensive, and refined, with attention to the details of
coding that seem often to anticipate every question that the user is likely to have. If you care
about visualization and graphics, and use R, then you cannot go wrong in acquiring this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for users of lattice graphics
I share the views of the previous reviewers: this book is great. I have been using R for several years now, and found the help pages for Lattice much too terse to really grasp the potential of the system. This books is loaded with examples, ranging from easy to quite involved, and the explanations given are clear and to the point.

A book like this deserved a production effort from Springer, and about three times as many color plates as it has, but even as it is seems to me quite good.

Aside from the description of the Lattice package, that Deepayan Sarkar obviously knows as only its designer can, there is a wealth of comments on graphics design and pointers to the classics of the subject --Tufte, Cleveland, etc.

A book not to miss by any seriously interested in statistical graphics, or indeed by anyone willing to add a powerful tool to his/her graphicstoolbox. May I only add that those willing to make a further investment of time to obtain the most of this book, might consider Murrell's"R Graphics" (Chapman & Hall), also a masterpiece of expository writing, discussing (in its chapter 4) Lattice graphics within the context of grid ---grid being the underlying graphics model on which Lattice is built.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I learned far more from a few hours of reading this book than I did from countless hours tinkering with Lattice graphs.I would recommend it without hesitation to any novice or intermediate user of R.

Furthermore, while both are helpful, this book is probably a better first purchase than R Graphics (Computer Science and Data Analysis).

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Deepayan Sarkar won a prize for programming Lattice. He deserves another for writing this book. The usual style of help files in R (including Lattice) is terse; this is a deliberate choice by the developers.Presumably, a lot of people like this terseness - but I am not one of them, and there are many others I know of who share my confusion at some of the help files.

Now, there's a whole book on Lattice, and it's written in an accessible style that will let me use Lattice much more creatively and with many fewer errors.

I think even experts on Lattice may find new things here; but for newcomers to Lattice, it's an indispensable guide. ... Read more

Product Description

This book provides a lucid and concise introduction to the basic results concerning the notion of an order. Although it is mainly intended for beginning postgraduates, the prerequisities are minimal and selected parts can profitably be used to broaden the horizon of the advanced undergraduate.

The treatment is modern, with a slant towards recent developments in the theory of residuated lattices and ordered regular semigroups. Topics covered include:

residuated mappings

Galois connections

modular, distributive, and complemented lattices

Boolean algebras

pseudocomplemented lattices

Stone algebras

Heyting algebras

ordered groups

lattice-ordered groups

representable groups

Archimedean ordered structures

ordered semigroups

naturally ordered regular and inverse Dubreil-Jacotin semigroups

Featuring material that has been hitherto available only in research articles, and an account of the range of applications of the theory, there are also many illustrative examples and numerous exercises throughout, making it ideal for use as a course text, or as a basic introduction to the field for researchers in mathematics, logic and computer science.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
I have been delving into this book for the past twenty years and now have my own copy. The book is truly inspiring, a wonder of flat pattern design. You will never ever find anything to compare with the wealth and variety of designs found here. This is it, the bible of Chinese lattice design.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Book That Makes A Great Gift
This remarkable book began as a momentary hobby when the author was sightseeing in 1916. He spent the next two decades or so collecting over 1,000 designs in China (primarily near Chengtu) that span three millennia. In this book, he classifies them into 26 general types, arbitrarily assigning a letter of the alphabet to each.

The book is a great gift for anyone interested in design, ranging from blacksmiths to architects. It is also an excellent reference and makes for interesting leisure "reading" when one is in the mood for visual patterns rather than verbal concepts. ... Read more

Product Description
Ordered structures have been increasingly recognized in recent years due to an explosion of interest in theoretical computer science and all areas of discrete mathematics. This book covers areas such as ordered sets and lattices. A key feature of ordered sets, one which is emphasized in the text, is that they can be represented pictorially. Lattices are also considered as algebraic structures and hence a purely algebraic study is used to reinforce the ideas of homomorphisms and of ideals encountered in group theory and ring theory. Exposure to elementary abstract algebra and the rotation of set theory are the only prerequisites for this text. For the new edition, much has been rewritten or expanded and new exercises have been added. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lattice Theory Uber Alles?Begin here
A set with, at minimum, one binary operation is a groupoid. If a situation involves an equivalence relation or some sort of symmetry, some sort of groupoid applies. If the set has, at minimum, two binary operations, and one operation distributes over the other, you have a ringoid. Ringoids, which include the real field we all use every day, tell us much about number systems.

Let there be a groupoid. Denote its single binary operation by concatenation. Let that operation commute and associate. So far, we have a commutative semigroup. Now add idempotency, so that AA=A. With that seemingly trivial axiom we turn a corner, farewell the groupoids, and find ourselves among the semilattices.

Now let there be two binary operations, + and *, that commute and associate. Moreover, assume that A*(A+B) = A = A+(A*B). A*A=A=A+A is now an easy theorem. What you now have is a lattice, of which the best known example is Boolean algebra (which requires added axioms). More generally, most logics can be seen as interpretations of bounded lattices. Given any relation of partial or total order, the corresponding algebra is lattice theory.Nevertheless, far fewer mathematicians specialize in lattices than in groupoids and ringoids.

Davey and Priestley has become the classic introduction to lattice theory in our time. Sad to say, it has little competition. It is a bit harder than I would prefer, and the authors do not say enough about the value of lattice theory for nonclassical logic. Their book is a classic nonetheless, and here's hoping that Gian Carlo Rota was right when he said that the 21st century shall be the century of lattices triumphant.
Lattice theory is largely due to the work of the American Garrett Birkhoff, writing in the 1930s. He gets my vote for the
greatest American mathematician of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and something more
This book presents an excellent introduction to the subject, but also goes beyond that, presenting with a fair amount of the detail the theory of Priestley representation. The excercises start at the basic level ofchecking the understanding of definitions, allowing the reader to buildconfidence out of the practice. The fact that Priestley herself co-authoredit is definitely a plus. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost...
These are just what it says, lattice designs. But they are all clip art sized. I expected at least some to be a full page but there aren't any. The CD has all of the designs in several formats which is great, but again they are small in size. I suppose stretching them or doing some sort of repeating of the pattern could fill up a page. The designs themselves are very cool. Some more detailed than others but all of them are nice. This would be a 10 star book if they were full page designs, but of course this would be a gigantic book that way. There are 191 designs in here. They are royalty free also if that means anything to you. use them for quilts or some other crafty stuff.

2-0 out of 5 stars wonderful but graphic files not clean enough
Firstly I am a devoted Dover phile. I have so many dover books, friends wonder If I am a showroom for them. That said, My only difficulty with this and some of the recent dover clipart offerings is thatwhile the graphics are good in selection, the rendered files are often not clean enough. I bought this book for the simple line drawings that are often used in laser cut projects but found that instead of clean single line vector art (as eps files usually are) they are mere scans and re-saves of bitmap art. That is, when you want the single line, you have in fact instead a thin two line stroke with a fill in between. For some things thats fine, but when you NEED the single line that the file seems to sell, it's far too much work to "clean up" all the secondary strokes, boxes, outlines and such to reduce it to what is still not a clean vector file. Disappointing because that means the difference between cutting the lattices quickly with the laser for use, vs only engraving them. It means the difference between files that can be used as is vs so many hours of reworking them that it's quick to redraw them by hand. It means the difference between buying more cover vs, not.
we need CLEAN single line vector art if it's line art... thickening the lines and changing strokes is FAR easier than cleaning up the bitmap for use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilter's Idea Book!

Product Description

The lattice formulation is at present the most successful approach to Quantum Chromodynamics - the theory of quarks and gluons. This book is intended for newcomers to the field and presents a clear and easy-to-follow path from the first principles all the way to actual calculations. It focusses on QCD and discusses mainly SU(3) lattice gauge theory, both with and without fermions. Numerical calculations in lattice field theory have now become the most effective approach for obtaining quantitative results, and thus three chapters include sections describing numerical techniques, as used in pure gauge theory, in quenched spectroscopy and in treating dynamical fermions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very elegant description to lattice Boltzmann
This is essentially the first book fully dedicated to the lattice Boltzmann method (LB). The author did a great job in providing the necessary history of lattice Boltzmann, from Lattice Gas Cellular Automaton, its subsequent development, and deployments to multiphase, supersonic, microfluidics, etc flows.

The unexperienced reader will find the first chapters very useful, as they lay the grounds for the rest of the book. The "derivation" of LB is especially relevant and full of insight. Very novice readers will certainly have to read the first chapters a few times to really grasp what LB is about (just because the concepts are seemingly simple but not straight forward in reality). The author, to this aim, provides all the tools necessary for a basic understanding of the underlying process (mostly the fields of statistical physics and cellular automaton).

The experienced reader will find this book to be a good reference to LB. The latest reference to date (Aug 20008) is the book by Sukop and Thorne (Lattice Boltzmann Modeling: An Introduction for Geoscientists and Engineers) that provides more recent developments in the LB field.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wide and good review but only for specialists
The LBM methods are widely reviewed in all their relevant aspects.
The only lacking of this book is the poor description of the mathematical/physical background needed by non-specialists for a complete undertanding of the book's topics (e.g. the link between statistical mechanics and fluid dynamics). ... Read more

Lattice theory evolved as part of algebra in the nineteenth century through the work of Boole, Peirce and Schröder, and in the first half of the twentieth century through the work of Dedekind, Birkhoff, Ore, von Neumann, Mac Lane, Wilcox, Dilworth, and others. In Semimodular Lattices, Manfred Stern uses successive generalizations of distributive and modular lattices to outline the development of semimodular lattices from Boolean algebras. He focuses on the important theory of semimodularity, its many ramifications, and its applications in discrete mathematics, combinatorics, and algebra. The author surveys and analyzes Birkhoff's concept of semimodularity and the various related concepts in lattice theory, and he presents theoretical results as well as applications in discrete mathematics group theory and universal algebra. Special emphasis is given to the combinatorial aspects of finite semimodular lattices and to the connections between matroids and geometric lattices, antimatroids and locally distributive lattices. The book also deals with lattices that are "close" to semimodularity or can be combined with semimodularity, for example supersolvable, admissible, consistent, strong, and balanced lattices. Researchers in lattice theory, discrete mathematics, combinatorics, and algebra will find this book valuable. ... Read more

Product Description

Here is a basic introduction to Lattice Boltzmann models that emphasizes intuition and simplistic conceptualization of processes, while avoiding the complex mathematics that underlies LB models. The model is viewed from a particle perspective where collisions, streaming, and particle-particle/particle-surface interactions constitute the entire conceptual framework. Beginners and those whose interest is in model application over detailed mathematics will find this a powerful 'quick start' guide. Example simulations, exercises, and computer codes are included.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book describes great toy models, but not for engineers
I most value this book for its brief and lucid introductions to the physics (e.g. multiphase flows) that can be incorporated into lattice Boltzmann methods.

As far as the lattice Boltzmann method is concerned, I soon found myself relying on papers in literature rather than this book (although it has to be said that this book thoroughly references publications in literature).

My main criticisms arise from following points:

* as a quick start guide, this book falls short in not discussing issues like initialisation and the general streaming-collision framework. I found the latter particularly confusing, since their code snippets suggest that they solve a slightly different equation than the one analytically described in the book. Moreover, the extension from 2D to 3D (which is left to the reader) is not as trivial as the book suggests (e.g. for the boundary conditions).

* the book gives an introduction to phenomenological models for e.g. multiphase flows. If you are an engineer or geoscientist, you might want to use models that are quantitatively more correct.

* The book doesn't go beyond lattice-Boltzmann toy models. If you want to do something "real" with lattice-Boltzmann, you will need to address more advanced issues (like how to deal with curved boundaries, or with higher-order lattices). While one cannot expect from the scope of this book to address those issues directly, it is a pity that the book doesn't prepare in any way for those issues. So probably, you'll have to throw away your code and start all over again if you ever want to model something more.

* Due to ongoing research, this book starts to become outdated. In part because the book introduces lattice-Boltzmann models from lattice-gas cellular automata (as they evolved historically), instead of being directly based on the Boltzmann transport equation (as is more common nowadays).

Overall, I quickly abandoned this book while writing my lattice-Boltzmann code. Nevertheless, you can probably have a lot of fun with the models proposed in the book, as long as you don't want to do anything too useful with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overview of lattice the Boltzmann method
This is the second book entirely dedicated to lattice Boltzmann, which is a recent numerical method for solving the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow (generally) and related configurations/issues (specifically and most recently).

It can be regarded as the little brother of Succi's book The Lattice Boltzmann Equation for Fluid Dynamics and Beyond (Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation), as it is very similar, about half the length and came out 5 years later. It therefore represents a good complementary text to Succi's.

The authors follow roughly the same line of thought as Succi's, but differ in two major ways: 1) their theoretical discussions are not as pronounced but 2) they present a much larger number of applications and capabilities by lattice Boltzmann, on engineering issues.

This is an important and necessary book for any LB practitioner in search of ideas or anyone interested in finding out more about lattice Boltzmann.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
This book gives a fairly detailed introduction into the 2D LB method. It includes helpful chunks of C/C++ that can be used to help write your own code. I would recommend this text to students that are having a hard time understanding the method based on the journal article literature available.

There is not a lot to learn for the expert in this field. ... Read more

Product Description
Lattice methods were recently developed to handle the multiple integrals that occur in quantum chemistry, physics, statistical mechanics, Bayesian statistics, and numerous other fields.Lattice Methods for Multiple Integration provides an outstanding introduction to the subject, offering numerous examples and detailed, practical descriptions of how each method can be applied to a wide range of situations.Thorough and self-contained, the book includes a user-friendly overview of lattice theory and introduces an important new algorithm--along with tables unavailable elsewhere--that both allows for the practical evaluation of multiple integrals in many variables and efficiently produces an error estimate. The book concludes with extensive numerical tests which compare lattice methods to other methods, such as the Monte Carlo. ... Read more

Product Description
The third edition of this definitive and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also examine such related issues as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. There is also a description of the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analogue-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, dual theory and superstring theory in physics. New and of special interest is a report on some recent developments in the field, and an updated and enlarged supplementary bibliography with over 800 items. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Mathematics master works of the 20th century
I have this checked out of the county library, but two weeks or two years,
I would still have trouble reading it all.
Dr. John Conway is one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century and Dr. Sloane isn't very far behind that. With their friend John Leech,
they have published this landmark in the history of group theory that seems destined to be beside Coexter's work as the most influential work on
on the theory of higher Euclidean and hyperbolic n dimensional groups.
That these groups have been related to the practical area of error free coding in information theory has made this knowledge both interesting and useful as well. With some awe I realize how much thought and work
went into writing this book.
I you were Dr. Sloane or Dr. Conway, you would have to ask yourselves, how can you ever top this?
This book is not "easy" reading, it hasn't been dumbed down
and the results are real enough for anybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book on lattice
This book is devoted to the subject of lattice packings. It is an outstanding book with all pages interesting. It acts as a reference on the subjects of lattices. What you will find:
--Sphere packings, ie the problem of packing spheres in order to maximize density.
--The problem of Kissin numbers: maximize the number of adjacent sphere to a given sphere in a lattice
--Code, design, and Groups
--Error correcting codes
--Leech lattice
--Integral quadratic forms
--Voronoi cell
--many, many other subjects
What you WON'T find in this book:
--The study of Delaunay cells (or holes, L-polytopes) is quite limited
--The study of continuous families of lattice is not done, you won't find the Voronoi memoires here
--There is just one page on computational aspects of lattice

Nevertheless this book is excellent ... Read more
