The astronomer explains, or tries to explain, how this 'evolution took place, by an appeal to the physical processes that have been worked out in the laboratory, processes winch he thinks have existed through all the eons during which this evolution was going on and which were its immediate causes.
When the biologist thinks of the evolution of animals and plants, a different picture presents itself. He thinks of series of animals that have Jived in the past, whose bones (fig. 1) and shells have been preserved in the rocks. He thinks of these animals as having in the past given birth, through an unbroken succession of individuals, to the living inhabitants of the earth today. He thinks that the old, simpler types of the past have in part changed over into the more complex forms of today.

A fine book about evolution
This is a classic text on evolution, and I think it is worth reading even now, well over seven decades after it first appeared.

Morgan starts by pointing out that the evidence for evolution is so enormous that it is not profitable to go over it.But the causes for evolution are certainly grounds worthy of debate.To some extent, that is true even today, let alone in 1932.

We start right out with a discussion of genes and mutations, with drosophila as examples.That includes a chapter on the cellular basis of heredity and a chapter on Mendelian inheritance.After that, the author tells us about variability and artificial selection, including issues of infertility associated with inbreeding.And next, there is a chapter about adaptation and natural selection.It is pointed out that one can be both a "mutationist" and an "adaptationist," but at the time, some scientists stressed one over the other.Morgan points out that mutation is a clear mechanism for accomplishing evolution, and that Darwin himself had, of course, not said so specifically (given that mutation theory was not developed until long after Darwin wrote).

Of course, natural selection does not mean just survival of the fittest but reproduction of the fittest, and that leads us to a chapter on sexual selection.

Morgan then discusses embryonic development.Does the embryo truly "repeat in its development the history of the evolution of the group to which it belongs?"This is, of course, recapitulation theory, as formulated by Haeckel.And the answer, in general, is no: the higher forms do not necessarily repeat all phases of development of earlier ancestral forms.On the other hand, there is plenty of evidence of repetition of developmental stages (examples being gill slits and aortic arches needed for fish showing up in bird embryos), and this at least gives more evidence for evolution.

Next there is a chapter on acquired characteristics, where Lamarckian theories are obliterated.And after that is a chapter on the social evolution of man, and some speculations about the extent to which we can direct, or at least interfere with, the future evolution of our species.

We then get to evolution and order of nature, where Morgan reminds us that evolution is a scientific endeavor which needs to be consistent with laws from chemistry and other scientific fields, and is independent of religion.The final chapter deals with speculations about mechanistic and metaphysical theories.

This is an excellent book about evolution, written halfway between the time of Darwin's Origin of Species and the present.

Fine Biography and More
This is a very good biography of the great American biologist Thomas Hunt Morgan.Morgan made a number of important contributions to biology but is known best as the founder of modern genetics.This is primarily an intellectual biography.Allen discusses Morgan's personal life but the primary focus is on his scientific work and thought.Allen also uses Morgan's career to trace important developments in the history of biology and American science in general.Allen's ability to use Morgan's life as a window on these broader dimensions elevates this book above routine biography.Through Morgan's life, Allen shows three major developments in the history of biology; the emergence of American academic biology as a major international force, the invasion of traditional biology by experimental methods, and the beginning of the successful fusion of genetics and Darwinian evolutionary theory.

Morgan's story is very much an American story.Educated at the fledgling University of Kentucky and then at Johns Hopkins, Morgan belonged to the first generation of American scientists who received almost all their training in the USA.While Morgan had productive sojourns in Europe, his career was an American one and his tremendous accomplishments are associated with American institutions; Hopkins, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Woods Hole, and Caltech.His most scientifically important period was his years at Columbia and he concluded his career by founding the Division of Biology at Caltech, the seedbed of much subsequent important work in modern biology.Morgan's trainees included a number of leading biologists, most of whom were American.Allen's description of Morgan's work and his interactions with mainly American colleagues shows the progress of American biology from provincial status to preeminence.

Morgan trained under the distinguished Hopkins morphologist WK Brooks, a man squarely in the descriptive natural history tradition.At Hopkins, Morgan was exposed also to another different approach to biology, the experimental tradition associated with 19th century physiology.Stimulated partly by his Hopkins experience and partly by the emergence of experimental embryology in Germany, Morgan developed a hybrid approach of bringing experimental methods into traditional areas of biology.The emphasis on careful experimental design, quantification, and disdain for speculation that didn't lead to experiments came to characterize Morgan's approach to biology. At the same time, Morgan's careful engagement with organismic biology prepared him well for the complexities of this subject. It required both careful quantitative analysis and thorough knowledge of the model organism, the fruitfly Drosophila, to do the crucial experiments. When Morgan became interested in questions of heredity, his hybrid approach would overcome the limitations of the overly schematic approach of prior geneticists and the lack of rigor of traditional morphologists.Morgan's great achievement was to unify the chromosomal theory of hereditary, based on prior cytological work, with Mendelian genetics.Allen has very nice descriptions of the progress of this work, showing not just Morgan's contribution but also the very interesting background and important work by other scientists.

Morgan's expansion and affirmation of Mendelian genetics represented a considerable change of heart.Prior to his intensive work in heredity, Morgan was, like many of his contemporaries, skeptical of the constructs of Mendelianism.Similarly, Morgan was skeptical about the importance of natural selection.Morgan's work and that of his remarkably talented students not only established Mendelian genetics but also provided the basic structure for the New Synthesis of evolutionary theory and its affirmation of Darwinism, one of the most important developments in 20th century science.

A final coda: As an embryologist, Morgan would dearly have loved to understand how genetic instructions lead to the formation of organisms.He recognized that this was impossible in his own time and confined himself to doable experiments.Writing in the 1970s, Allen remarks that this was still a mystery.In the last 30 years, enormous strides in genetics and development biology have realized Morgan's wishes.Morgan would have been particularly gratified by the fact that some of the most important work in developmental genetics was done at Caltech by the Drosophila geneticist EB Lewis.
