In response to its remarkable global growth, the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation (IWTF) was created in 1988 to govern, promote and develop the sport worldwide. The original eight founding member nations have been joined by more than 45 other countries and it is estimated that wheelchair tennis is played in more than 70 countries in all continents. 2000 ITF Wheelchair Tennis World Champion David Hall On 1 January 1998, the IWTF was fully integrated into the International Tennis Federation (ITF), making it the first disabled sport to achieve such a union at an international level In order to maintain links with former IWTF member nations, which include National Disability Organisations, National Wheelchair Tennis Associations and National Tennis Associations, the International Wheelchair Tennis Association (IWTA) was formed. The IWTA acts as an advisory body to the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Committee, representing the views of players and administrators. rules The game of wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis except that the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. Although tennis had been played in wheelchairs before, the development of wheelchair tennis really started in 1976 when Brad Parks first hit a tennis ball and realised the potential of this new sport. The mammoth efforts that went into the initial marketing and promoting of the sport, leading to the formation of the IWTF in 1988, are almost immeasurable. As news of wheelchair tennis spread across the nation and gradually the world, Brad started to get more and more invitations overseas to help new countries establish wheelchair tennis programmes. When the IWTF was formed in 1988, there were just eight member nations. Martina Navratilova helping out a clinic in the USA But it wasn't until the IWTF gained a full time officer in 1991, that the resources and structure were in place to allow the worldwide development of wheelchair tennis to really take off. From the outset, the IWTF's development programmes were all about increasing awareness of wheelchair tennis around the world. "New" countries were constantly encouraged to become involved and existing countries and established players were encouraged to assist. Often, the initial contact from new countries came through Ellen de Lange's attendance at the ITF AGM each year where ITF Member Nations would hear about the work of the IWTF and ask if it would be possible to start up a wheelchair tennis programme in their country.

Since its inception in 1976, wheelchair tennis has been the fastest growing and one of the most challenging and exciting of all wheelchair sports. It has provided opportunities for many disabled people to enjoy competitive tennis, as well as sharing experiences with both able-bodied and disabled friends of all age groups. Wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able bodied tennis except that the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. An official recognition of the two bounce rule was given when the International Tennis Federation included this rule in its official rules of tennis. Initially, wheelchair tennis was mainly played in the United States. In 1980, The National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis (NFWT) was founded as the organizing of the sport in the United States. By giving clinics and exhibitions the NFWT gained exposure for wheelchair tennis worldwide.

25 Years of Wheelchair Tennis
“To paraphrase Michael Jordan, it is not the fact that you fall down that is important, but whether you get back up.” Emotive words from wheelchair tennis legend Randy Snow. “Getting back up” is perhaps the most gut-wrenching thing a person with a disability can do. It takes character. For some, “getting back up” involves an intellectual activity but for others it is sport. Since it was founded in 1976, wheelchair tennis has become the fastest growing disability sport. But more than an activity, wheelchair tennis gives people the chance to regain self-belief, to push the limits and, perhaps most importantly, to smile again. From its humble beginnings as a leisure activity, wheelchair tennis is now conducted on a professional basis with its own tournament circuit, ranking system and prize money. Yet 25 years ago, the sport barely existed. Commonly considered the founder of wheelchair tennis, Brad Parks was injured when he was 18 and had to be in a wheelchair. He began to find out about the sports that he could play. The Californian recalls, “Shortly after I started playing I met a guy who was building sports wheelchairs and playing wheelchair tennis named Jeff Minnenbraker. He was playing with two bounces on his side of the court. I tried it and it made sense.”

National Capital Wheelchair Tennis Association
Promoting recreational and competitive tennis for all.

Wheelchair tennis was introduced to Ottawa in 1985 as an initiative of the Chairperson of the Recreation Development Committee of the Canadian Tennis Association with the Ottawa Athletic Club. The local legacy of the product was a successful wheelchair tennis program run by local leaders from both the tennis and disabled community. The National Capital Wheelchair Tennis Association (NCWTA) is a volunteer based body which guides the development of wheelchair tennis in the Ottawa-Carleton region. NCWTA is dedicated to promoting and providing competitive and community based wheelchair tennis activities for persons with a physical disability. Tennis is an excellent tool to utilize in the development of physical and wheelchair mobility skills, personal positive self-imaging and personal growth through exercising independence and expanding beyond perceived limitations. This season, Table Tennis will also be offered through NCTWA. What We Do

new menu (MENU_ITEMS, MENU_POS1, MENU_STYLES1); Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association offers a wheelchair tennis program aimed at introducing the sport to our members as well as increasing the skill level of those already involved with the program. Currently, dozens of members enjoy this sport with a number of them competing nationally and internationally as part of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association wheelchair tennis program. In wheelchair tennis, rules and regulations are basically the same as in traditional tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. The sport allows individuals with disabilities the opportunity to play tennis with their family and friends regardless if they have a disability or not. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against standup players.
